Sheriff James L. O Malley was served notice by Police Chief W F Kidder as a delinquent on the road poll tax. The amount due is 2 dollars and 50 cents plus a 50 cent penalty.
District Judge Ralph W. Hasner ruled for William Rentz in the long dispute with Esther Erdman Rentz finding no proof of cruelty harming health and no proven adultery.
In Muscatine the button trade grew to supply 22 percent of the US output after J F Boepple a German immigrant discovered freshwater mussels in the Mississippi He built a shell button machine in 1891 spurring a local boom that made Muscatine the pearl button capital of the world.
George Andrews of Anamosa set a series of firsts in Jones county court by being drawn as the first petit juror for the first term, reporting first for examination, being the first accepted, and occupying the first chair in the jury box.
Mrs. James Welborn, described as the crash mother, remained unconscious at Broadlawns General Hospital after an auto accident. She has had four blood transfusions and is reported in poor condition, unaware of the birth of her baby or her twenty first birthday anniversary.
Frederick Ware is buried in a small adjacent cemetery. He served in the Revolutionary War as a private and later as a lieutenant in Pennsylvania’s York county militia. In Bangor prison Dalhover, sole survivor of the Al Brady gang, confessed to three midwestern killings to G men. He admitted the slayings of Ohio state patrolman George Conn, Indianapolis police sergeant Richard Rivers, and Indiana state trooper Paul Minneman during a bank robbery. Extradition was waived and authorities prepared to fly him to Indiana for trial.
Hayward Phillips of Waterloo pleaded guilty to reckless driving after a collision eight miles north of Ainsworth on primary road 161. He was fined 25 dollars plus costs and treated for a broken shoulder at a hospital in Iowa City before discharge. He could not pay the fine at once.
The state finished its case against Art Anderson of Washington in the Keokuk county court on rape charges and defense evidence began. Judge Silerra denied a directed verdict and overruled a request to change the charge. Helen Shauf testified as the initial accuser, with other witnesses recalled. Bangor Maine October 13 one week ago Clerk Everett Ilard of Dakin's sporting goods reported Al Brady and two accomplices entering the store and asking about guns. G men surveilled the trio for days then a blast-fire standoff ensued as Brady Shaffer and Dalhover opened fire. Brady and Shaffer were killed as Dalhover was wounded and captured.
James Chorpenning, 11 miles northwest of Washington, lost his left hand up to the wrist when his hand was drawn into a corn picker roller on his farm at about six this morning. Doctors at Washington county hospital performed the amputation after severe crushing and tearing of fingers and hand.
The car stolen from Fred Juzeler’s garage last Thursday night was found abandoned in an Ottumwa alley by a highway patrolman. Sheriff Putnam and Juzeler recovered the vehicle, noting tools intact except for a small hammer added by the thieves. The car had traveled about 112 miles through several towns where schoolhouses were robbed the same night, suggesting a linked series of thefts.
Deputy Sheriff Stan Kie sey investigated a morning collision on the Brighton road over Crooked creek where a wrecked car hung on a bridge railing.
