Iowa City dean Paul C. Packer resumes duties at the State University of Iowa college of education after a three year absence spent in Alaska and the China Burma India theater as a lieutenant colonel during wartime service.
Mrs Maude Morain of Des Moines was reelected vice president and Mrs Ida B Wise Smith of Des Moines was reelected president of the Iowa Woman's Christian Temperance Union at the convention closing. A resolution urged an education program to outlaw beverage alcohol socially and another asked railroads to reserve space for non-smokers in diners and Pullmans.
Mrs Anna Schaefer 68 pleaded guilty to arson in the burning of farm buildings on the former Schaefer homestead now owned by Herbert Gass District Judge Merion G Kellum sentenced her to 10 years in the Iowa Women’s Reformatory at Rockwell City
Martha Weeks of Nevada named style revue winner of Iowa for outstanding 4 H clothing work this year. Margaret Rahl of Muscatine selected as alternate. Weeks chosen from 24 county entrants as 4 H clubs judged statewide. over 3 009 girls participated locally and county level.
Des Moines Gov Robert D Blue will confer with the state board of education at Ames on expanding visual education in Iowa schools. The conference will be exploratory as visual education relies on films and pictures from elementary to college courses. The University of Iowa and Iowa State College have built sizable libraries of visual aid films. The governor said humans gain a major portion of knowledge through their eyes.
Not many solicitors in the National War Fund drive reported to the secretary Mrs. Don Minick yesterday, consequently only 430.75 was turned in. The county total stood at 5560.75 by 4 pm. Ray Whitehead turned in 72 from the Court House. High school teachers contributed 67 and were turned in by Bill Jones. Merle Sheetz, working on a 60 quota, turned in 71 from Center school district in Franklin township.
Washington D C October 12 Civilian Production Administrator J D Small said today he had set up machinery to ration manufactured gas amid wartime shortages. The issued program aims to allocate gas to essential services and industry while curbing nonessential use.
Dr. W. L. Imes president of Knoxville College will speak at United Presbyterian Church Sunday morning and evening. He will address the Men's Brotherhood Monday dinner, the Rotary Club at noon, and the high school student assembly at 9 am. He is a noted author on education and race relations. His son Lt. Wendell Phillips Imes was killed on the Italian front December 4, 1944.
