Mrs Rosa Babcock marked her 100th birthday at her daughter Ella Cheever’s home where she resided since 1934. Friends and neighbors visited as six of her seven children and a Lisbon based 100 year old sister joined the celebration.
Clarion reports Mrs. Lloyd Hagie, a farmwife east of town, received severe burns to her head chest and back when the coal range she used for canning in her basement exploded. She reached the first floor and was taken to Clario General hospital for treatment.
Gov Rupert D Blue announced he wrote the Wright Field air technical service command seeking the return of the Des Moines fairgrounds in time for a 1915 fair An air forces storage depot has been at the fairgrounds since shortly after Pearl Harbor.
Three police officers in a city patrol truck were ordered to shoot dogs found on the streets. A small terrier was killed after hitting an officer, with a rabies report from Iowa City confirming infection. A earlier rabid dog had bitten children and other animals.
A department of labor conciliator, H is Micnavi Sherman of Des Moines, visited Ottumwa to aid talks between Ottumwa City Lines, Inc. and its bus drivers union. Union representatives met with Chicago executives this week, but no agreement was reached.
Des Moines and surrounding cities will establish ceilings on certain consumer grades of eggs sold by farmers and retailers effective Thursday. The office says the ceilings pass on wholesale savings to consumers, aid small retailers in complying with price rules, and prevent wide gaps between farm and retail prices.
Des Moines District Judge Tom K Murrow upheld John W Riner for Des Moines police sergeant, denying three other candidates veteran preference claims. He ruled Stanger Geyer Louis J Volz and E W Ervin could be on the eligible list but had no preference over Rider.

Don Bowman of Indianapolis hunted squirrels while playing golf at Kokomo's American Legion course. He hit a ball into a tree and a large fox squirrel fell dead. Bowman had a hunting license in his pocket.
A burglar who knew his way around entered the Simpson Finance office in the Journal building Tuesday night and stolen $195 in cash. Doors to other offices were tampered with as well, suggesting an expert entry. Harry Simpson says the incident is unprecedented. clues are being followed.
In Chungking, October 11, the Chinese central government and Mao’s Communist regime issued a joint communique after 45 days of talks. They pledge to prevent civil strife, form a political consultative council, ensure freedom of speech and assembly, recognize all parties before the law, and release political prisoners.

The Denver ordnance plant produced almost five billion rounds of ammunition, more than half again the quantity produced in the entire United States by all manufacturers in World War II.
Lloyd McCall of Washington son of J A McCall, released from Pootung Civilian camp in Shanghai, was an engineer at the Shanghai Power Plant owned by an American company. He and others stayed at the plant before entering the camp, his French wife Lucienne helped by sending food and small packages. The American company plans to reoccupy the plant and asks volunteers to stay until normal operations resume.
Washington county reports total National War Fund receipts of 5130 with 2526.40 from city solicitors. Daily totals included 960.80. Contributions came from Egypt and Center Cedar Sumner No 6 districts, plus employees of American Pearl Button and Curran companies. No town reports yet at local headquarters.
The Committee for Economic Development urges presidential and congressional aid to coordinate studies on production and employment into a definite program for a stable economy. Its reserve committee released a pamphlet titled Toward More Jobs and More Freedom outlining responsibilities of management labor and government.

General MacArthur announced that 1,250,000 American troops will be sent home from the Pacific in six months leaving about 200,000 in Japan and Korea. He directed Japan to adopt a five point program to end government bondage, liberalize education, promote labor unions, women suffrage and reduce State Shintoism while preserving military occupation with 400,000 remaining in the region.
Washington October 11 The United States should toughen policy and refuse loans to Russia and Britain until policies are clarified. A sub committee of the house post war policy group after two months study in Europe the Mediterranean and the near east urged open door on press access and clarified Russian position on five points while condemning Britain for trade barriers and Sterling Plan terms that force business with the homeland.
