An evening highway crash on Wayland road a mile and a half south of town killed two hogs and injured driver Charles Randall 21 of Washington. The hogs wandered from a nearby farm onto the road, the impact overturned the car, causing serious damage and cuts and bruises to the driver.
Secretary of State Earl G Mil ley mailed sample ballots to county auditors listing certified national and state nominees for the November 5 election. Republicans occupy the first column and Democrats the second on the paper ballots.
Prize checks totaling 298 dollars for corn show winners and 265 dollars for horse show winners were mailed today by Festicorp treasurer Harry Sizer. The two events, among Festicorn highlights, run up to 562 dollars in awards, with remaining expenses for judges and labor also paid to settle the affair.
Dennis Berger two year old son of Mr and Mrs Henry Berger sustained a fractured leg and other injuries when a tractor at the family home three miles north west of Wellman ran in reverse and backed over him. He was taken to Mercy hospital Iowa City for X ray examination and treatment. His grandparents Mr and Mrs A C Ruegsegger are moving to Washington from Wellman.
The Communist Party candidate finished third after the ruling that their dates were eligible two days earlier, with the Prohibition and Social Labor parties trailing. A sixth column was available for write-in candidates.
Cal Pearson 83 prominent in Ainsworth county politics died at his home after years of declining health. Born May 29 1857 he lived his life in Ainsworth farming then retiring to town. Survived by wife Mattie Colthurst six children and many grandchildren. funeral Saturday at 3 p.m. with ministers Shook and Nye. Burial in Ainsworth cemetery.
The Four Square church youth present an evangelistic four act Bible drama The Last Winning with a large cast led by Mrs Evangeline Rushford and Maxine Bower. It includes scenes from Greek and New Testament figures and tableaux with ministry roles and a mob scene. The event is scheduled for Sunday at 7 30 p m.
A Washington County draft board meeting organized its duties with focus on registrant classification after next Wednesday’s registration. The board includes Richard McCleery as chair, Lloyd Foster secretary, and Francis W. Schnoebelen as member, all above age 36 and serving without pay.
The Washington county older boys and girls conference will be held at the Kalona Methodist church on Wednesday October 23. The theme is Be Only Strong and Brave. Kalona committee includes Agnes Yoder chair, Helen Rogers vice chair, Darlene Sojka secretary, with Mrs. C E Hillis as general advisor and county officers listed.
Berlin reports a British naval attack on Cherbourg and air raids on Hamburg and the Ruhr with 21 killed and 49 wounded. London says German bombers attacked coastal towns and a cathedral city while British fighters repelled five strafing attempts and destroyed four German planes.
The gospel team from the First Baptist Church Men’s club in Muscatine will lead the service at Washington Baptist Church Sunday evening. The team is led by Ed Dankert and includes quartet members Leonard Plessy Arthur Nicholson Leoa Odell and Richard Krell plus Victor Miller Burton Mark and Paul Hunt. They have previously conducted services at various churches in the region.
Floyd Chamberlin 27 died yesterday at Mount Pleasant hospital. Funeral services Sunday at 1 PM at the Chamberlin home 115 West Madison and 2 PM at Spring Eun church with Rev Dietrich. burial in Winfield cemetery. Survived by parents, one sister Bernadine Buffett and three brothers Clifford Dallas and Wayne, all of Washington. Arrangements by J C Ritchie Columbus Junction.
Mrs. J. A. Harwood was guest of honor at a noon birthday dinner hosted by R. and Shannon. Attending were Mr. and Mrs. Shannon and their son Robert, and Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Shannon with daughter Barbara, who celebrated her three months birthday as four generation pictures were taken.
