Sioux City five fire companies responded to a hay barn fire at the stockyards. Estimated loss reached fifteen thousand dollars. Investigators believe spontaneous combustion sparked the blaze, noting the barns were some distance from the livestock pens.
John Knoll a 64 year old farmer living near Geneva died at his home from injuries after a bull he was watering attacked and gored him.
Melbourne farmer Floyd Roberts, already struck by a May tornado that leveled his home and barn, killing his mother and injuring his wife, faces further loss after a gasoline stove explosion in his one room shack. He plans a closing out sale next week and will quit farming.
Frank Karbowski age 16 of St Paul Minn died from a bullet wound while riding in a Chicago Great Western boxcar about 14 miles south of New Hampton. He and companion Frank Sager 18 said the shot came from a field. The bullet entered his neck and lodged in his spine. No inquest planned. Officers pursue origin of shot.
Cedar Rapids painter Francis Robert White is reported to be in full charge of Iowa Works Progress Administration art projects. Iowa director Jessie Hawthorn admitted White is acting in that capacity and said permanence depends on Washington, D C.
John F. Baker, 91, a Civil War veteran and longtime door man for the state senate, died of apoplexy at his Newton home. A widower, he married his 85 year old sister-in-law in April 1935, making him the oldest bridegroom and bride in the state. the couple gained attention as “Uncle John” and “Aunt Lide.” A year ago the second Mrs. Baker died.
Fire destroyed Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church fourteen miles west of Lake Park just after services. The belfry was discovered by the pastor’s children, Rev. Re. J. Kalsen. The parochial school and parsonage were saved. the congregation had marked its fiftieth anniversary in June and the church had recently been redecorated at a cost of 600 dollars.
Des Moines Iowa District meetings for October announced by Frank Miles in the Iowa Legionnaire list sites and dates for districts seven through two. Council Bluffs Fort Dodge Hartley Keokuk Waterloo Independence Des Moines Newton Maquoketa provide the schedule.
Prof Roy Fligkinger announced the speaker lineup for the University of Iowa classical conference to be held in Iowa City on December 8 and 9. Columbus Junction October. William Walkington 85 died about seven last night at Bellevue hospital Muscatine where he had been for treatment. Funeral Wednesday afternoon in United Presbyterian church conducted by Rev C B Ramsdale. Burial in Columbus City cemetery. Survived by two sons Clinton and William and daughter Gertrude.
Fort Dodge reports Leslie Alexander, 44, jailed on a manslaughter charge connected to the death of 57 year old Joseph Stuflick last week. Authorities say the case stems from an incident leading to the fatality.
Several people were injured in a late Saturday afternoon automobile crash eight miles north of Ainsworth on No 161. Hayward Phillips of Waterloo suffered a neck injury and was taken to the University hospital in Iowa City. Anna Phillips, 29, also of Waterloo, was hurt in the head and back. The Phillips car, carrying five adults and two children, rolled two to three times after a side swipe with another car, which none of its occupants sustained damage. The other machine escaped injury.
A man was killed in a fight with an individual identified as Alexander. Police investigated the incident and Boston authorities urged witnesses to come forward. The confrontation occurred downtown, and the investigation was ongoing with no further details released.
Mrs. Neva Rousch, 9, mother of five, died when her car collided with a westbound vehicle driven by Woodrow Shearer on a gravel road near Crawfordsville four miles east of Columbus Junction. The Shearer car struck and crushed the Rousch vehicle turning it over. the youngest child survived in her arms. The crash appeared caused by blinding sun. inquest not required. Five children and the other occupants suffered minor injuries. Mrs. Rousch, née Neva Rutt, was a Columbus Junction resident, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Rutt, survived by her husband, three sisters, and other relatives.
In Deproit on October 11, seven Boehn aluminum plants were closed by a sit down strike involving 3,500 workers. Union leaders called the move unauthorized, while company officials blamed the union for failing to honor its contract and failing to control members.
Fritz Belter aged 27 a nephew of Jack Westphal of Washington died yesterday morning in Muscatine hospital after five weeks illness due to streptococcus poisoning He was the son of Mrs Otto Belter Westphals sister and Mr Belter who lived in Muscatine He had visited Washington many times and was well known here Funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon in Davenport where the family had lived for years

Fire heavily damaged a large residence at 320 East Jefferson Street owned by the McNamaras of Iowa City. The Palmer family and Miss Mary Atchison occupied the home. firefighters battled two outbreaks with a roof collapse during the second blaze. Insurance covered the structure. origin undetermined though possible escaping gas.
Sheriff Putnam was notified that the Rukgaber hardware store on the square was broken into Saturday night and several guns were stolen. The entry included a broken back window, and the cabinet door was left closed. Stolen items include multiple shotguns rifles and airguns plus a 22 caliber Winchester model 67. Additional thefts reported include groceries from cars downtown and a suit of clothes from a car at a Friday football game.
A car collided with an Illinois Central Passenger train at a grade crossing a mile east of Dyersville. Miss Leone Stetten 25 of Farley and Miss Frances Kramer 22 of Dyersville were killed. Injured were Miss Wilma Krapfle 21 and Arthur Westmark 22, both of Dyersville, with doctors at a Dubuque hospital giving the injured girl little chance to live.

Born October 9, 1863 near Marietta Ohio, she lived in Washington County since childhood, married to John Zeigler, and was active in the Methodist church and the Women’s Relief Corps. Surviving siblings include John Skipton of Washington and Charles Skipton of Conesville. five sisters and one brother preceded her in death.
