Two youths ran away from home and were charged with trying to derail the westbound Rocky Mountain Limited near West Liberty by laying a rail tie and pinning it with spikes. The engineer who saw the danger halted his freight engine moments before the passenger train arrived.
A thief took a 21 jewel wristwatch from Jus tene Postle of Iowa City. He tried to soften the theft by leaving a $2 timepiece in its place, yet Postle would still prefer his own watch returned.
Work on the proposed Muscatine Memorial Park, a new cemetery on a 16 acre tract, designed with modern engineering and landscaping, was under way here to create a simple beauty.

Ferrin Rowland a 36 year old farmer hanged himself in the county jail twenty minutes after telling prosecutor he would plead guilty to murdering his two baby step daughters Katherine Woodin six and Virginia two and a half. He confessed to tying the girls to a plowshare and tossing them from a boat into lake near Flint. The mother Elizabeth Woodin Rowland was held at Harrison after the girls disappeared.
Iowa state highway commission approved a Rock Island and Milwaukee tracks grade crossing elimination project in Washington. The $70 000 plan would add an underpass at North Second avenue with 72 workers, funded by federal act and tied to surveys and contracts before starting. also considered is removing key spur tracks to limit excavation and concrete work.
E J Hartzler runs a Des Moines newsstand in the post office building with no blind sign on his unit. He says his aim is the utility of magazines and newspapers. Hartzler, a former piano tuner, has lived in Des Moines 35 years. his wife is blind. The stand operates with special permission from Washington DC.
Grangers adopted resolutions praising Secretary Henry Wallace and A. A. act administrator Chester Davis for aid to agriculture. They urged every eligible farmer to vote in the farm referendum and endorsed a crop control program including soil improvement and retired acres used for grass.

The resolutions committee of the Iowa Baptist convention presented a report condemning the Iowa liquor system as more inquirous than the old taloon system. A trucker from Manchester to jail on charges linked to Delaware county's first cattle rustling case. Raymond Jewett admits he moved five heifers from the Ifred H. Ahrens farm near undee to Waterloo and sold them at a packing plant.
Iowa’s 1935 corn crop is estimated at 373,642,000 bushels or 81 percent of normal by C D Palmer of the US Bureau of Agricultural Economics. The average yield is 38.5 bushels with favorable September weather but frost risk remains. Soybean hay and tame hay production are also above last month.
Funeral services for Miss Margaret Hofsteater will be held at the Ainsworth United Presbyterian church Sunday at 2 30 conducted by Rev S Fred Sharpe. Burial is in Ainsworth cemetery. She died yesterday at the home of her nephew Harry Mathews in Kansas City where she had lived the last year. She was 83 and spent most of her life in Ainsworth. She was a member of the Ainsworth church and daughter of Eli and Eliza Hofsteater figures in the pioneer family. survived by sister Mrs Sadie Mathews of Kansas City.
The county allocates funds for a Cop pock bridge removal and a separate Marion township project on the M. & 8&t. L. to hire 19 men at a cost of 17,000 dollars. The total county allotment reaches 102,000 dollars.
County Treasurer Marion George reports nine months of 1935 tax collections show 88 percent paid. Total levied tax amount was 597,890.26 with 37,137.72 refunded from state funds, leaving 560,752.54 due and 68,000 still uncollected. Delinquent notices go out as December sale approaches.
Webb Miller reports from Aduwa that Italian forces control the north front with massed units advancing toward Aksum and Makale while Ethiopian resistance is limited to sniping. Casualties appear under 100, with Aduwa taken with minimal damage and no gas or liquid fire observed.
County offices at the court house will be closed all day tomorrow in observance of Columbus Day as a legal holiday announced at the courthouse today.
About $68,000 of the $180,937 September collection was allocated to Schools. Public schools received $94,819.47 with Washington city schools at $30,993.30. Other allocations went to the county general and poor funds, road construction and maintenance, emergency and hospital funds, and the bovine tuberculosis program. Towns listed include Washington $15,576.87 and Wellman $1,789.25.
Washington Community Players announce a winter series of broadcasts featuring works by well known authors over WSUT. The group plans monthly broadcasts on the third Thursday nights and will admit new members, with about half the current troupe away at school.
Mrs Sol Rich of Chicago dies in Chicago at the home of her brothers Dr Ludwig Simon and Dave Simon on October 10 after a month of illness. The body will be cremated and buried locally with funeral arrangements to be announced. Born Sallie Simon June 4 1857 in Mt Pleasant Iowa she lived in Washington for over 50 years with Sol Rich before moving to California and later Chicago. Her daughter Laura married Mr Lieberthal and died in January 1931.
The League of Nations voted to impose a worldwide arms embargo on Italy as part of a three point penalties plan. It also backed a global boycott of Italian goods and a ban on extending loans to Italy with enforcement possible tomorrow pending legislative details. Capt Anthony Eden urged using Roosevelt's war material list as the embargo guide.
Two orphan boys from Davenport admitted laying a railway tie across Rock Island tracks in Muscatine to see what would happen. They will likely face delinquency hearings Monday after local authorities intervene. A freight train halted before a potential collision, and the crew reported the tie in time.
Judge Frank Bechly yesterday sentenced Franklin Waggoner to three months in the county jail on a guilty plea for driving while intoxicated. The sentence was suspended during good behavior and Waggoner was paroled to Sheriff Harold M. Putnam. The judge, spending only one day this week, may complete the September term with a possible extra day. The session included arguments over the Washington National Bank trusteeship.
Mrs Car Gleason of Edgewood halted to miss a skunk on the road. Her Model T Ford stalled. Floyd Peterson of Edgewood and Harlan Rohdeher of Greeley, driving opposite, collided blinded by headlights and the parked car, wrecking three autos and injuring six.
