Newton civic groups sponsor annual Halloween party for boys at the YMCA gym to divert youths from pranks. The event has kept mischief down for two years by offering entertainment during prank hours.
The first snow of the year fell Wednesday night turning from rain to snow and left nearly an inch of snow on the ground.
For the second year the University of Iowa presents a November 6 opening concert by Albert Spalding violinist of international fame. Richard Crooks tenor and Harold Bauer pianist appear in the series with two St. Louis Symphony concerts closing the course.
The Davenport Davenport population is 61,797 and 10wTa is 2,488,337 per a federal census formula announced in Washington. F R Norris drove an ancient coupe that failed to brake, crashing head on into the Twin Star theater in Ames. The car jumped the curb and sidewalk, scattering posters and stopping after hitting a car. Norris lamented no brakes and no breaks.
University of Iowa announces addition of 14 courses to the correspondence study list as 1200 men and women complete work by mail. About 175 courses are now offered with new offerings in commerce physical education physics German and Latin per Miss Helen Williams of the extension division.
A Cedar Rapids artist Francis Robert White was chosen to lead the government mural project at the Cedar Rapids courthouse despite surprise in Towa art circles that Grant Wood was not awarded the commission. The official announcement from Ashington DC named White as in charge and aged 28.
Reports from Des Moines say the state highway commission and works progress administration approved a project in Washington to eliminate a grade crossing over Rock Island and Milwaukee tracks. Plans include an underpass on North Second Avenue and rerouting Primary Highway No. 1 north to Iowa City to reduce grade crossings.
Iowa officials approve 38 projects totaling 870000 dollars to eliminate grade crossings. The plan, backed by L S Hill and John J Hughes, would re employ 650 men daily and add to 5000000 already allocated by the federal bureau of roads. Notable projects include Rock Island and Milwaukee railways in Washington county and M and St L in Marion township with 17 to 35 thousand dollar costs and 36 to 19 workers.
Tonight eleven acts perform at the Y M C A for the first annual Washington county Amateur Night preliminaries. Nine more acts added yesterday bringing total entries to thirty three as voters will select four finalists for the State theater finale on October 23.

At Atlantic City the American Federation of Labor delayed a decision on the construction industry dispute after two hours of debate. The move postpones action and is a direct rebuff to AFL President William Green as peace efforts resume.
Thirteen persons including several corporate officials were named in federal warrants in Chicago on October 10 for supplying materials for bootleg liquor and stills. Warrants were sought by U S District Attorney Michael Igoe and Treasury official B C Yellowley of the liquor tax division.

Des Moines reports A R Hurst of Hurst Home Insurance Co says farm mutuals must modernize or disappear. He cites 2000 mutuals nationwide, most locally managed with long-tenured records and modest net worth. He calls for closer cooperation with federal land banks and gradual changes to reduce upheaval in fire and tornado insurance.
Theodore Dykstra of Corvallis Oregon returned from a government assignment as a plant pathologist. He visited experiment stations in Ireland Scotland England Holland Germany and France beginning in June. He started from Corvallis to Madison Wisconsin then Greene Colorado before returning home. His wife is Myrtle Rouse formerly.
Mrs Christina Meyers was summoned to Chicago yesterday due to the illness of her daughter Mrs James Kelly. The move reflects family concerns as the daughter receives care in the city.
In Geneva on October 10, fifty-one nations condemned Italy for its undeclared war on Ethiopia under the League of Nations covenant. A committee of over 20 nations will decide penalties, with sanctions expected within days. Italy Austria and Hungary opposed the action while Albania reserved objections, and France pledged to uphold the covenant as international law.

New residents Lester Wiele and Dewey Short have moved to Washington from Burlington and Red Oak. Wiele joins the vDewit Food Market as meat department head with his wife, while Short has six years at Butler Grocery. They live at 603 North Iowa Avenue and 1120 East Main Street and attend Evangelical and Grace Evangelical churches respectively.
