A new workbook by Albert M. Fulton of the University of Minnesota, a former Fairfield youth and son of Mr and Mrs J W Fulton, has been officially adopted for use in Minnesota university speech classes.
Mrs. Hattie Weaver Wood, 77, mother of artist Grant Wood, died at her son's home in Iowa City after a brief illness. She had lived with the Wood family in Cedar Rapids and joined her son here last month.
Iowa Jewish community observes the Seven Day Sukkoth starting tonight, lasting seven days. Des Moines hosts observances with services on Saturday and Sunday at city synagogues, celebrating the Feast of the Booths.
Dr Don L Braddy acting director of the service in Iowa announced the closing of the transient service vocational school at Charles City. The facility trained several hundred wandering youths in basic vocations and had a 90 pupil capacity. Some graduates were sent to Iowa State College Ames on scholarship with tuition funded by federal aid.
The state personal net income tax and its three point tax law approach a final showdown as the State files an answer contending the law was enacted through the proper legislative procedure in Marshalltown.
Basil Banghart of the Roger Touhy gang helped lead a prison escape attempt at Menard prison. Four men tried to crash the gates with an automobile. Banghart and two others were recaptured immediately. the fourth is believed hiding in a nearby wooded plot.
Sheriff Harold M. Putnam arrested Don Russell at a local hotel this morning at the request of Na trona County Sheriff R. John Allen of Wyoming. Allen had wired last night stating Russell was in town and to take him into custody. Russell claimed no knowledge of any charge.
Harry M. Gage president of Coe College Cedar Rapids will be guest speaker at the Men's Brotherhood dinner at the Presbyterian church next Monday evening announced by Brotherhood President De Wit. All men and boys urged to attend, tickets not required. Dinner begins at 6 20. Dr Gage recently spoke at a club meeting and was praised as one of the finest speakers here.
Jess A. Garringer and William Pershing completed a tractor driven machine for gathering seed from sweet clover. The device uses a revolving paddle to beat the clover and throw the seed into a large tin container.
Striking dairy farmers in Chicago claim they are moving toward a settlement that would aid the new milk marketing organization. Reports describe a conference toward this end with scattered violence in the strike area. Strikers dumped kerosene into 6,000 gallons of milk in a Hebron warehouse as leaders meet in Elgin but refuse to disclose details of the program.
Fifteen amateur acts from four counties perform in the second preliminary of Washington county's first annual Night in the G club. Final set for October 23 at the state theater after two more preliminaries at the Y M C A. Audiences pay 10 or 15 cents and vote for five winners.
Des Moines reports 81 248 unemployed registered with the Iowa employment service as of September 1. Six thousand thirteen jobs were filled in September, with 92 percent of 6 570 openings filled. Men numbered 70 065 and women 11 183. new applicants 5 627. Washington high school band under new director Maurice Brayton performed a pregame concert and halftime drill. Drum major Mary Lytle led a lively field routine forming an S and a W while playing the school song. The performance drew liberal applause and showcased the band's fall progress.
The South Second Avenue surface, once a rock bed, was transformed to a deep black by sprayed oil as part of an improvement project. Oil treatment began from East Madison to Clara Barton, with top coatings planned using asphaltic material and rock chips later. Daily rock shipments are advancing as the program proceeds, including recent activity near Burlington.
Washington county educational meetings advance corn hog control plans with R M Evans of Des Moines set to speak in Washington Saturday and Wellman Thursday. County voters will decide Oct 26 on a 1936 program with 2 500 eligible voters including 1 460 signed contracts.

Des Moines reports private employment in Iowa industries rose 2.9 percent in September with payrolls up 4.2 percent and average weekly wages up 0.7 percent. Of 41 major industries, 30 added jobs, 30 raised payrolls, 9 boosted wages, and 25 increased operating schedules, led by lumber products 19.2 percent and textiles 12.3 percent. Wenig notes continued gains after July and August increases as operators offer encouraging remarks.
A 4-H parade around the city square is planned for about 9 tonight by a gaily costumed crowd from across the county. The masquerade party follows at city hall for 4-H members and signup attendees with prizes for costume categories funded by J. E. Lemmon.

Mrs. Julia Bridgman McConnell widow of Asa McConnell died at her daughter’s home 602 North Second Avenue this morning at 3 05 after weeks of illness. Born May 10 1843 in Ashton Ohio she lived in Wisconsin Iowa and Minnesota before settling in Spencer area. Interment plans point to Spencer Iowa in the family lot Monday afternoon.
In Geneva the League of Nations little committee on penalties studies a worldwide boycott of Italian exports and a plan to bar Italy from borrowing abroad to cripple its war effort in Ethiopia. Debates hinge on American business stance while a sub committee outlines how to strangle Italy’s foreign exchange for raw materials and food. Meanwhile in Addis Ababa Count Luigi Vinci Gigliuci Italian minister to Ethiopia seeks asylum after barricading in the legation and later surrenders it under guard.
Italian staff believe an early junction of the northern and eastern Italian forces is possible with minimal fighting. Ras Guegen of South Tigre province has surrendered with 12 900 soldiers armed with rifles and machine guns, clearing the way to the eastern front, enabling railway disruption and isolation of the capital.
In New York on Columbus Day 400 fascists and 400 anti fascists clashed around Columbus Circle during celebrations. The riot raged with police present and several people were slightly injured.
Mrs. McConnell, a Spencer Iowa native and longtime Baptist church member, died in Washington. She was a former Eastern Star matron and avid reader renowned for needlework including a quilt last year. Survived by three daughters Mrs A L Peterson of Postville, Miss Dasie McConnell of Minneapolis, and Mrs Frank L Broadgate, local resident.
