W. P. A. administrator Hill of Iowa declined to confirm a Washington report that he resigned. He arrived yesterday to board Roosevelt’s special campaign train with state Democratic leaders. The group will travel to St Paul and return to Des Moines tomorrow.
Mayor Merle F. Wells announced Davenport’s request for a 356,755 grant from PWA administrator P F Hopkins has been approved in Washington. The funds accompany plans to extend the intercepting sewer system and build a sewage treatment plant at a total project cost near 800,000.
Chicago police search for William Blum 22 of Dubuque Iowa and James Field 21 after two men met a stranger who agreed to buy whiskey for them. Blum handed over 210 dollars and his automobile to a man identified as Big Sam who vanished with both the money and car.
In Moline the estate of William Butterworth former Deere & Co. chairman and past United States Chamber of Commerce president is valued at 3 822 688 with Deere common stock 2 255 085 and preferred stock 627 317 forming the bulk. At his death last sum he held 349 120 cash on hand.
Hartford report says Mr and Mrs John Daniele of Melcher Iowa were killed and Mrs Bessie Dougal also of Melcher injured when their car collided head on with a coal truck driven by O B Reynolds of Knoxville Iowa on Highway 60 near Hartford. The couple had married two weeks earlier.
Cartoonist J. N. Darling urged unity among conservation clubs in the United States at a Cherokee County gathering. He told more than 500 attendees that conserving soil and streams is essential so hungry men will not search in vain for food in future years and called for greater cooperation among groups nationwide.

Mrs Charles Nicola receives notice of the death of her brother D N Reed yesterday morning at 11. Reed formerly lived here and had been in Los Angeles recently.
Officers were elected at the Louisa county Medical association meeting in Letts. R W Tandy Morrigen Sun was named president F A Hubbard Columbus Junction vice president FE King Letts secretary treasurer. A house warming is planned for Oct 21. November meeting set for Oakville Burlington.
Mr and Mrs A S and S Allen and daughter Kathleen of Richland were shoppers in Washington this morning.
Funeral services for Lawrence Morgan 68 of Nicholls and formerly of this vicinity were conducted at the Methodist church Thursday afternoon in Columbus Junction with the Rev W A Bloomquist officiating. Burial was in Columbus City cemetery. Morgan died Tuesday in Bellevue hospital Muscatine. He was born March 28 1878 in Princeton Missouri. Surviving are his widow six daughters Mrs Margaret Shimak Columbus Junction Mrs Lena Adams Muscatine Lucy Florence Edna and Frances at home five sons Lawrence Jr Nichols Charles Edward Muscatine Fred and Tony Conesville.
An army weekend with bright sun was forecast for Iowa today. Skies were clearing after rain over the eastern and southern portions of the state as temperatures rise.
DES MOINES Oct 10 From now on it s Pap Gruber Council Bluffs Iowa state agent Gruber a former plain Paul Gruber explains he added the middle initial after a clipping. Wilfred Butter and Paul Gruber staged a private automobile race in a school district on West Locust street Thursday. Both were arrested, Sutter failed to appear and forfeited a $10 head Gruber pleaded guilty and lost his license for 60 days.
James D. LeCron of Des Moines, assistant to the secretary of agriculture, expressed faith in Roosevelt’s re election by buying a new home in an exclusive Washington, DC, residential district. The LeCrons have settled in after a trip to Scandinavian countries.

He will present Jewish Passover as observed by Christ and disciples with a Passover table on stage. Rev W J Stevens plans loudspeaker installation as revival runs nightly except Monday. Haimovitz to speak tomorrow on A Vision of God. Reservations urged.
FR J. Trumbull of Mason City announced the purchase of the Biklen Variety store and takes possession. The new E. J. Trumbull company store will remain five cents to a dollar and expand stock to a strictly first class dollar-and-five range. The Trumbulls plan to move into 509 West Third Street and may have their son Paul with them part of the time. Former owners Charles C. and Herman H. Biklen have not released future plans.
Will Hobbs and his daughters Marianne and Helen from West Cheater shopped in Washington this morning. Helen attends school in Oelwein and came Thursday to spend the weekend with her parents.
Pressley Figgins 88 of the Richmond Kalona area died at 6 15 this morning at his daughter’s home south of Kalona after a long illness. Born August 10 1848 east of Richmond he married Nancy Hear in 1873. Surviving children include Mrs Clarence Neville Mrs Aaron Halley Mrs J A Wray Mrs George McGraw Hal Figgins Frank Figgins and Wilbur Figgins. Funeral services set for Monday at 2 PM at the Kalona Baptist church with burial in Kalona cemetery.
Richard Cleaves of Cherokee travels Mexico by bicycle with Adrian Walser and William Kass Jr. starting Monterrey. After 180 miles they spent 5.23 dollars while each carries 200 dollars in traveler’s checks. They camp, carry food, and plan to tour until money runs out.
A school bus driven by Albert Frenzen overturned into a ditch two miles south of Dike on Thursday evening. Nine students escaped serious injury while Kenneth Kale sustained a deep cut from broken glass after the bus hit loose gravel.
Edward Moch, 61, a former convict, was sentenced to 10 years at Fort Madison after pleading guilty to breaking and entering. He admitted stealing $36 worth of lumber from Rival Machine Co in Davenport and selling it for $2 to buy liquor.
Four masked gunmen robbed the Swift and Company produce station in Iowa Falls during President Roosevelt's special train passage. They tied and gagged staff, blew the safe, and escaped with about $2,500 as fingerprints and descriptions were collected by state agents and an expert.
Washington Federal Savings and Loan Co has bought the Motts estate building, now home to Gamble Agency. They plan to move in around mid November and may make improvements first. Gamble store representatives said the exact future location is not yet decided.
In Joliet Illinois two youths shot Lawrence Butch Crowley as he stepped from his car in front of his home. Crowley Joliet s wealthiest bootlegger reputedly had gold door knobs and denied targeting the slot machine racket. His condition was described as critical.
A larger poultry show is planned by the Washington County Poultry Breeders association for November 18 to 21. The event, held in city hall, will feature standard and non standard classes, eggs and dressed poultry, increased prize money, 4 H clubs, and exhibits from supply and equipment firms. Oscar Grow of Atlanta Mo will judge, with free coffee for attendees and additional features to be announced.

Otis P. Johnson a former convict and oil station owner who sought the Republican nomination for Henry county sheriff in June is indicted on two charges in a grand jury report. He is accused of selling lewd literature and contraband devices. Bond set at 1000 pounds on each indictment.
