A column reports sixty new lawyers were sworn in before the Iowa state supreme court on Thursday afternoon. Of 81 who attempted the bar exams given Tuesday through Thursday, sixty passed the examinations. Eight applicants with near passing written scores received an extra oral exam.
Iowa City officials announce Dr F R Peterson appointed head of the University Town hospital and college of medicine department of general surgery succeeding Dr Howard L Beye who was killed in an auto accident last week. Peterson, a 1920 University of Iowa College of Medicine graduate, has served in the general surgery department since 1922 as assistant to Dr Beye.
Box elder bugs swarmed Charles City on Thursday covering pedestrians and store doors. The insects flew into mouths and ears while drivers kept car windows shut to cope with the invasion from the pests.
NUMA schools shut for a week due to several scarlet fever cases. The dedication of the new gymnasium scheduled for today is postponed.

West Chester, Oct. 9. W Carson Wilson living two miles north of town was injured walking home from Wellimay when struck on the highway by a car driven by Homer Hole and traveling with Mrs. Hole. The accident occurred on the hill outside Wellman as they swerved to avoid him. Wilson received a badly fractured left leg and several cuts and bruises. He was taken to Washington County Hospital where x rays confirmed the fracture.
Dunham Morrison sustained slight injuries last night after his car was driven into a ditch to avoid a collision with another vehicle. Both cars suffered minor damage and no serious harm occurred to either driver.
The Literary Digest presidential poll shows Landon extending his lead over Roosevelt for the sixth straight week with a total of 713,451 votes for Landon and 485,392 for Roosevelt from 1,254,716 reported. Wisconsin and Kansas show gains for Landon while Lemke's share continues to fall. electoral college tally sits at 344 for Landon to 129 for Roosevelt.
Tickets for the Iowa Alumni banquet to be held Tuesday evening at the Country Club may be bought at Nicola and Marmon’s book store McDaniel’s drug store or from Charles Long Harold Williams Charles Grayson and Lawrence Wilson. Bill Boeler freshman football coach and several varsity players will speak. Two films will be shown one about last year’s Iowa Tililg game and one on campus deans and activities.
A conference was held yesterday to discuss the county maternity demonstration unit now operating in Washington County for about four months. Attendees included Dr. E D Plass, Dr. Walter L Bierring, Dr. Joseph Kinnaman, Miss Alice Rooney, Miss Alma Hartz, Rev. Carl W Klein, county medical society members, and county health and welfare staff. The unit, part of the county health program, aims to advance public health through new maternity services.

Funeral services for Harry Devon Palmer two years old who died yesterday will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at the L A Jones funeral home. Rev Vernon H Carter will officiate. Burial is set for Woodlawn cemetery. He was born June 6 1934 to Mr and Mrs T W Palmer of 1203 East Seventh street. A brother Thomas Jr and half brother W R Palmer survive.
Grinnell Bell College reports a total fall enrollment of 788 students with 280 freshmen and 234 sophomores among the class. The administration released the figures, outlining the distribution across first and second year students.
The report lists 167 juniors, 89 seniors, 12 unclassified students and six graduate students, outlining the distribution of the current student body.
President Roosevelt arrives in Iowa on a train with a campaign stop at Dubuque and a farm speech broadcast nationally. Governor Alf Landon launches a 2,400 mile trip, drawing thousands in Freeport and planning a Chicago address and a Cleveland stop, with broadcasts set for the campaign.
President Koocey opened his Iowa campaign in Dubuque with a 26 000 strong crowd in Murphy stronghold.
