A Newton column reports Helen McDaniel, 16, sustained a fractured left wrist and severe head and face bruises when the car she rode in struck a pier of an overhead railway bridge. Francis Ellsworth, 16, driver, and three other passengers escaped with minor injuries. McDaniel was taken to Skiff hospital for treatment.
Mrs Virginia Bedell of Spirit Lake urged district convention attendees to support strong national defense and to help keep the nation steady and thoughtful in current international relations. She spoke as Dickinson County attorney and emphasized American women’s responsibility.
George Laprell a 23 year old employee of Dubuque Packing Co is in critical condition at Mercy hospital after a hunting accident He was seated on a log when a rabbit appeared and as he stood he slipped the shotgun discharged blowing part of his hip away.
Corning officials announce a new above the ground swimming pool funded by 9000 dollars in city bonds and 16200 dollars in WPA money. Wesley Bintz of Lansing designed the project, which will be the first of its kind in the area. The pool features an inverted hat shape with bathrooms and dressing rooms beneath the rim.
McGregor recalls the town well at Rossville, once central to crossroads life. With the advent of autos the well became a hazard as cars crashed into it, waking residents at night. The modern age rendered the town pump obsolete and finally removed it.
Delbert Puckett, 26, of New London, tried to escape Henry county jail in Mount Pleasant. Sheriff Manning Cline and Deputy Kiss Boyd waited outside after hearing pounding. Puckett crawled through a brick wall hole, climbed a barbed wire fence, and dropped to the ground before officers.

Fred Altenbernd seventy died last evening at his Dutch Creek home after a heart attack. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 PM at Sherman's funeral home conducted by Rev. Carl W. Klein with burial in Oak Ridge cemetery. Born June 3 1869 in Sweetland township Muscatine county he married Roxana Mosier in 1894 and lived near Muscatine until 1899 then moved to Scott county before settling in Dutch Creek in 1921. He was a Berea Congregational church member and is survived by his wife a son Howard Altenbernd a daughter Jennice Engel a grandson a brother Chris and three sisters Mary Shellabarger Margaret Whitmer and Mrs John Gross. Two brothers are deceased.
Mrs Minnie Ritt, 37, of Freeport New York, suffered a fractured arm and shoulder when she fell from the Northwestern Pacific Limited near Mount Vernon. She told authorities she opened a door as the train neared the station and fell. she was reported recovering at a local hospital.

County agricultural conservation officials announce the county convention for organizing the 1940 federal farm benefit program. Employees of Iowa Southern Utilities voted Friday and Saturday under the national labor relations board. Of 284 eligible workers across maintenance and production, 150 supported the company union, 134 opposed. Voting took place in Burlington and Washington, with final tallies released locally.

Will iam Reese a 33 year old WPA worker was shot and wounded at his son-in-law’s home in Des Moines after a brawl during which his wife says he had been drinking. Lem L. Davis 48 a WPA supervisor turned himself in to police claiming self defense.
Police investigated two vandalism cases in Fort Dodge. A deer in the Oleson park herd was found shot to death, with a reward to be posted for the slayer. In the business district, thirteen tires on six autos were punctured, likely by an ice pick or similar tool.
Rollin B Organ born July 19 1844 in Washington Iowa died in Chicago after a long residence there He will be buried in Woodlawn cemetery with Eastern Star and Masonic services to be held in Washington and Chicago He recalled early life in Iowa and wrote about frontier days and local history.
