Wesley Jebe a 26 year old farmer near La Porte City was in critical condition after a corn picker gripped his right forearm nearly severing it and mangling his feet. He saved his life by holding the arm with his left hand until a tourniquet could be applied.
Frank Crone business agent for the Waterloo local of the Truck Drivers union pleaded not guilty to an indictment charging him with assault with intent to inflict great bodily injury. He is accused with three others of attacking Albert Wallskog during a milk delivery as the union struck against Schermehorn Dairy.
Waterloo reports the Dandon Air troupe will perform a charity air show featuring a "pie-a-back" landing with a plane on another in flight. Sponsored by the Junior Chamber of Commerce, two pilots Danny Fowlie and Don Herent will lead the troupe as they depart Waterloo for California to film a movie short of the stunt.
The Catholic pastor Rev John J. Judge from St Marys is aboard the America-bound liner Iroquois carrying war refugees home. The Iroquois, a German coast era target, had been threatened with sinking before reaching the United States. He had traveled to Ireland last June to visit his parents.
Five year old Dennis Gazzo of Des Moines will partly lose sight after he pulled apart a water gun to see how it worked. As he twisted the trigger spring it snapped and struck his eye, causing a deep cut. he is recovering with his parents Mr and Mrs Joseph Gazzo at his side.
Frederick Pyle Bullington six year old of West Burlington died after being struck by a grocery truck on his way to school. He suffered a fractured skull and other injuries. The boy’s father Clarence Pyle accompanied him part way to school and left just before the accident. Deputies report the boy cried out Diads before the truck struck him.
Des Moines reports Northwarc Mayor Edwin M. Sabin surrendered his Iowa law license to the Iowa Supreme Court and asked the court to strike his name from the attorney list. Acting Chief Justice Frederick M. Miller informs three district judges handling the disciplinary proceeding at Northwood about the surrender of the certificate.
About 20 women were injured when a six foot plank platform collapsed during Fairfield's centennial costume contest. The crowd had gathered for the winner when two six foot wide sections gave way and fell six feet to the ground. none were seriously hurt.
Ed Thomas, 60, died in a Knoxville hospital from burns after a gasoline blast at the Caswell mine. He slipped while carrying gas to start motors, wearing boots at the time.
Des Moines reports a sharp rise in Iowa grain elevators being certified as bonded warehouses amid the government corn sealing program. Since Aug 1, 259 applications, 151 new licenses issued after inspections of 251 applications. 100 remain to be licensed once bonds are signed. Short of Demands resealing corn from 1937 and 1938 crops by Nov 1 drives the increase. estimated storage need far exceeds capacity. License costs include 12 dollars yearly plus a 10 dollar inspection fee. warehousing uses quarterly inspections and insurance. storage and hauling charges apply per bushel.
Des Moines reports the Commerce Commission granted the Chicago Rock Island and Pacific Railway Co. permission to replace watchmen with flashing signals at five Davenport grade crossings Western Avenue Flames Street Brown Street Warren Street and Marquette Street The ruling notes objections centered on schoolchildren safety with 24 hour operation boosting motorist protection and finds children more observant of automatic signals All three commission members approved unanimously The Davenport city opposition questioned the commission s jurisdiction.
Helsinki reports Soviet Russia asked if Finland would send a representative to Moscow to discuss military and economic problems. Foreign Minister E. Erkko said the cabinet is weighing the proposal and is expected to approve sending someone to receive Russia's proposals.
State motor vehicle examiners issued fifteen regular driving licenses after tests. Names include Mrs. Harry H. Smith and Albert E. Gross from Muscatine and H. Paul Hanson from Kalona, with four chauffeur licenses awarded to Morse Muscatine and McGuire Columbus Junction.
The Wayland road from the city limits south to the country club entrance will be completed today by the county board of supervisors. The program covers 53 miles of oil surfacing with alternate rock and road oil layers and a top rock chip, an experimental treatment aimed at making the county’s best country roads.
The commission ruled it had authority over the matter after a June 10 1989 petition and July 14 Davenport hearing. Iowa has about 275 crossings with flashing signals, mostly funded federally. A committee from the Iowa State Library Association met at the Washington Public Library to prepare for the state library convention planned for October 15 in Des Moines. Out-of-town members Edna Giesler of Davenport May Ditech of Ottumwa and Mrs. Cora Millard of Burlington attended.
The Iowa Baptist convention will be hosted by Fort Dodge's First Baptist Church from Monday through Thursday. A ministerial conference Monday and Tuesday, a state Women’s Baptist Mission Society meeting Tuesday, and the convention proper starting Tuesday evening, with banquets Thursday night. Noted speakers include Dr Luther Wesley Smith and Dr Earl F Adam among others.
The Yankees hit four home runs in the seventh and eighth innings to beat Cincinnati 7 to 3. Keller slugged two homers driving in runs with Crosetti and DiMaggio contributing. Rolfe added a first inning single as the Yankees won their third straight. Pitchers were Thompson Grissom and Moore for the Reds and Gomez and Hadley for New York.
San Pedro California October 7 All leaves of sailors aboard the battleship U S S Arizona were canceled due to alleged sabotage plot. Naval authorities offered no comment on any planned damage or casualties, and orders recalled all shore going crew members.
Ray Oldson of Davenport sustained broken ribs when his car left the Sandy Hook hill gravel road between Brighton and Washington after being blinded by an oncoming car with bright lights. The vehicle rolled into a barnyard ditch and toppled onto its roof, sharing the scene with an uninjured female passenger.
The pastor and his wife Rey along with Mrs. J Fredmund were elected delegates. They will depart for Fort Dodge Monday morning. The congregation hopes other members may attend part or all of the convention.
United Press reports Hitler's 10 760 word address failed to persuade Allies or neutral observers. London and Paris ridiculed the proposals and prepared for large scale hostilities while Berlin praised the overture. German patrols intensified on the western front as French forces repulsed ten dozen raids and a French general staff lieutenant colonel was captured.
President Roosevelt indicated he is not ready to respond to Berlin’s suggestion that Adolf Hitler would be willing to have him mediate the European war. White House officials kept silent on Berlin’s armistice proposal and Roosevelt remained in close touch with the State Department and Cordell Hull.
Senate Foreign Relations Chairman Key Pittman said Roosevelt would again offer peace services for Europe but would wait until a spirit of adjustment is evident. He warned the move must be welcome to both sides or it could be seen as improper interference during a neutrality bill debate.
Car failed to notice Mr Oldson had left the road and went into a ditch. A Brighton physician attended to his injuries including minor cuts and bruises. Friends from Davenport visited Mr Oldson and his friend last night.
