Earl Whitehill, star pitcher for Washington Senators, will skip winter at home in Cedar Rapids to join a barnstorming troupe. The group plans a Canada and Orient tour sailing from British Columbia for Japan around the 19th of the month.
The Edward M James building in Eagle Grove will open for occupancy October 10 with liquor store fittings by October 20. Monthly rent paid by the state liquor control commission includes water. Two governors will attend a Des Moines celebration on October 12 honoring Christopher Columbus. Floyd B Olson of Minnesota and Clyde Herring of Iowa are invited to speak.
Ex Governor W. N. Hardin, stricken with a heart attack in Crawfordsville Indiana while campaigning, has sufficiently recovered to be moved to Des Moines. He is improved though fatigued from the long automobile trip back from Indiana.
Charles James aged 60 of Cairo receives life imprisonment for the murder of his divorced wife Myrtle James on April 8 1924. The sentence was handed down at Ft Madison penitentiary where he will serve his remainder of natural life.
Iowa City council ends eight month dispute by denying a Public Works Administration loan and grant totaling 917000 for the municipal light plant project, halting construction plans.
Governor Herring and Secretary of State Mrs. Alex Miller spoke briefly at the dedication of a new airport in Forest City. The ceremony Sunday drew about 5 900 attendees and marked the opening of the facility.
Arch Breeding, a special police officer, surrendered in Montgomery County after fatally shooting his wife Friday night following her divorce filing. He said he had been drinking and, when she refused another chance, he pulled his gun and shot.

Fred Cavie age 16 and Floyd Cablar age 18 died Sunday afternoon in a hunting accident on the Missouri river bottoms. Cavie was a student at Siouey City Central High School. The shotgun discharged during the hunt, leading to the fatalities.
The Warren County grand jury in Flemington New Jersey considered a murder indictment against Bruno Hauptmann and heard testimony from Col. Charles A Lindbergh. The panel of 20, mostly farmers and businessmen with three housewives, planned to return its findings before nightfall. The state aims to convict Hauptmann of murder carrying the death penalty rather than the kidnapping charge with a 20 year sentence. Concerns centered on avoiding dual indictments that could lead to him pleading guilty to a lesser offense.
Six papers from the Halsey Stuary company files were missing when the government sought to introduce them as evidence in the Insull mail fraud case. Most missing letters were addressed to Harold Stuary, president of the company, as prosecutors pursued conviction of Samuel Tweull and sixteen associates in public utility enterprises.

A Crawfordsville hearing is set for this afternoon before Mayor A. Gault to hear two youths Pat Bailey of Davenport and a Bleese resident about tearing down and removing signs in town last night. Des Moines Oct 8 W P) W EF Dripps manager of the Iowa state corn husking contest announced the 194% meeting will be held on the farm of A J Hansen six miles west of Waterloo. The field was chosen from five offered for the contest and includes 50 acres with an expected yield of about 75 bushels per acre. A crowd equal to last year’s 25,000 is anticipated.
Iowa City report states Mrs. Walter Goodman was struck and killed by a passenger train on the Rock Island railway while walking on the right of way. Authorities say she did not hear or see the train and there will be no inquest.
Dobry, president of the Dobry securities company, was denied a high court review of his conviction in Iowa courts on the charge of filing false financial statements with the secretary of state.

Two independents, Harry L. Whittaker and M. M. Flynn, filed petitions for the Washington County supervisor seats closing the 1945 race. Flynn seeks the January 1935 term against Republican incumbent J. Brown and Democrat Rey Foster, while Whittaker runs against Republican Rey Mapel and Democrat EK Rever. Independent bids for county offices are rare in the county, last seen in 1924.

Des Moines reports heavy Friday voting in Iowa corn hog referendum as returns show 60 percent support to continue the program next year. Rh M Evans, Iowa corn hog chairman, says 32 602 for continuation and 18 a against from 781 townships across 65 counties and expects tally to finish this week.

The funeral for Charles Van Deran was held Saturday morning at Sherman’s funeral home conducted by Rev. W J Stevens. Pallbearers were George Garrett Charles Messenger James Morrison and Sam Deran. Burial was in Elm Grove Cemetery.
