Washington High School planned Homecoming activities proceeded despite more than $2,000 in damages from Thursday night vandalism. Officials described acts including broken windows, glued locks, spray paint, fired extinguishers, egg splashes, and chickens released on campus.
The Iowa Department of Transportation will hold a public hearing on the proposed Iowa 1 improvement in Washington County. The meeting is Thursday October 20 at 7 p.m. in Kalona Community Hall. The project includes widening the current 24 foot road to include 10 foot shoulders and replacing the English River steel truss bridge with a pre stressed concrete bridge. Public questions answered one hour before the hearing. Project maps are available at the Kalona City Clerk offices in Kalona Iowa City and Washington.
Kevin Wayne Dodson of Kirksville Missouri was seriously injured in a one car crash on highway 218 three miles south of Ainsworth. His car crossed the road struck a telephone pole and a concrete wall in a ditch. Dodson was taken to Mercy Hospital Iowa City after being pinned beneath the front of the damaged vehicle.
Maryland Governor Marvin Mandel was sentenced to four years in federal prison on each of 15 mail fraud counts and four years on one racketeering count, with all terms to run concurrently. Judge Robert L. Taylor set parole eligibility under standard rules.
The Senate, by 74 to 23, defeated Sen. James McClure's bid to exempt youths 16 to 19 from a $3.40 an hour minimum by 1981, signaling labor backing to keep teens and older workers on the same pay scale. Critics warned it would undercut jobs for youth and minorities.
Rain diminishes in the west tonight with lows in the low to mid 40s. Partly cloudy conditions linger in the southwest while the northeast sees clouds and rain ending Saturday with highs in the 50s.
DES MOINES UPI unemployment in Iowa fell sharply in September to 2.8 percent of the labor force from 3.3 percent in August and 4 percent a year earlier. The number of unemployed declined by 8,900 to 29,900, reflecting little statewide layoff activity and continued strength in construction retail trade services and local government. The unadjusted rate was 2.2 percent, third lowest in the nation behind Nebraska and South Dakota.
Harris daughter of Mrs. John Minneman and Barb Reneger daughter of Mr and Mrs John Reneger were finalists. The queen was chosen by a ballot of the high school students after candidates were picked from the senior class.
A strike by 270 production workers at Crane Co iron valve plant in Washington was avoided as local 159 of the International Molders and Allied Workers Union ratified a two year labor contract. Union members approved 90 to 42 after a 24 hour extension to formalize the deal. The agreement provides an average wage increase of 8 percent in year one and 7 percent in year two with no change to overtime language.
Labor Department data show unemployment at 6.9 percent in September, a 0.2 point drop from August but still near 7 percent since April. Black unemployment fell to 13.1 percent after August’s 14.5 percent, while overall job rolls rose to 91.1 million as women and teens saw varied gains and concerns over minority job prospects persisted.
Washington reports the FBI, aided by 175 more special agents for a 200 officer task force, has reduced backlogged Freedom of Information requests. Deputy AG Peter Flaherty says most requests now move within about 30 days, though the 10 day legal target is unlikely to be met due to high demand. Quinlan Shea notes the rate exceeds 64 requests daily and 30 days is now the best achievable target.
Bradford Gowen, a talented pianist, delivered a memorable Washington Community Center concert. He performed left hand only pieces by famous composers, plus Henry Cowell works for multiple limbs, and even plucked and pounded bare strings with a volunteer from the audience. The program also featured Rachmaninoff and Chopin. Intermission saw seven Concert Association board members re-elected to three year terms.
Members of Washington High School Choral Union present He Lived The Good Life at the fall pop concert on October 11 at 8 p.m. in the High School Auditorium. The program blends modern popular styles with choral works and includes solo spots for numerous students and a Hi-Fi group performing 1920s to 1940s tunes with Gershwin tributes. Tickets at the door, $1.50 adults, $1 students, IDs 75 cents.
