Marshalltown hosts the fifth annual state convention of star route mail carriers and auxiliary at Hotel Tallcorn. Officers will be elected with incumbent state president E. L. O'Brien of Carroll seeking continued leadership.
Three hundred sixty men from the Cedar Rapids Chamber of Commerce Young Men's Bureau visited the Anamosa State Reformatory. They were not jailed, dining in the reformatories dining room then heard a program and returned home.
Rev. Jack Finegan of Iowa State College Ames will address the second district Iowa Federation of Women’s Clubs delegates this afternoon on The Real Defense of Democracy. About 390 women attended the tea for the federation’s golden jubilee. Mrs. H. C. Houghton Jr. of Red Oak urged an enlightened citizenry of women to help keep America out of war.
Evelyn Jean Robinson, 14 months, daughter of Mr and Mrs Floyd Robinson, fell 12 feet from a second story window after unhooking a screen. The braid caught on the screen hook and partly broke her fall, saving her head from impact though she suffered a three inch square patch of hair lost and facial bruising.
Ivan Wethington age 20, a farm hand, was sentenced to 25 years in Fort Madison Penitentiary after arraignment in district court for the $300 robbery at the Gibeaut Insurance agency in Mechanicsville. Roy Ward was charged and shot by Deputy Sheriff C. C. Crawford after resisting arrest.
In Dubuque a federal suit seeks 125000 dollars from four northeastern Iowa lawyers. Charles J. Wolfe of Minneapolis, formerly of McGregor, claims false arrest and imprisonment. Defendants: Clarence F. Murphy Elkader state senator M. X. Geske McGregor George B. Richter Waukon former Allamakee county attorney and F E Sharpe Elkader former Clayton county attorney.
Two cars collided at the intersection of roads No. 218 and 22 east of Riverside yesterday afternoon. Three of four people in one car sustained bruises and cuts, but no serious injuries were reported. Drivers were Leroy Glaspey of Iowa City and Frances Poehler 75, of Iowa City. Passengers included Harl Glaspey and Ella Hunsinger 60, both of Iowa City. River side residents Henry Griffin and George Krebs were not hurt.
The county now has 5543 licensed cars, up 202 from a year ago, with 5341 on Oct 6, 1938. Trucks total 767, up 58 from last year. Three new cars licensed this past week include J. H. Miller of West Chester with a Plymouth four door touring sedan, J. W. Mourney of Washington with a Ford de luxe Tudor, and Eardley Bell Jr of Wellman with a Ford Tudor.
Harold Palmer leads Keota area corn contest with 157.61 bushels per acre based on preliminary results. Raymond Herr second at 153.51 bushels with contest final awards set for Nov. 7. Nearly 300 participate in six township event near Keota.
J H W Greiner, winner of last year’s Keota contest, tops the latest state yield list with 137.19 bushels per acre, though several growers are close behind. David A Bousléy and Tom Baylis also near the top with about 141 bushels, moisture tests await final ratings, and Palmer’s field shows 130 bushels per acre potential as others compile results for the banquet.
The Iowa Supreme Court will hear the state's appeal from a Polk County ruling on the use tax for Sears Roebuck and Montgomery Ward. An injunction barred the tax commission from collecting the two percent use tax on mail order sales handled from out of state. The case concerns whether phases of the use tax are constitutional.
Twelve isolationist senators agreed to back the administration's neutrality bill but seek to drop provisions repealing the arms embargo and credits for other commodities. London reports the British ministry of information says Hitler’s Reichstag speech offers no concrete peace basis and demands freedom from aggression. Berlin reports Hitler urged a conference of nations for security and disarmament while warning of a finished war if peace fails. He claimed Germany and Russia would stand together and pressed for a peace bid from strength.
