A fire destroyed the rear of the Vindicator and Republican printing plant in Estherville causing several thousand dollars in damage to presses and equipment. The paper will be printed temporarily at the News and Enterprise plant.
Humboldt youths Carl Parsons Harold Parsons and Robert Russell, all of Humboldt, travel with coach Donald Groves to the national dairy judging contest in Columbus Ohio after winning state honors at the Dairy Congress.
More than 400 school heads attend the twenty fourth annual conference at the University of Iowa in Iowa City. W. W. Theisen assistant superintendent of Milwaukee schools will speak on to social change implications for school administrators. Newton Edwards of the University of Chicago selects Educational Problems of a Changing Population as the subject.
O. G. Jones of Sioux City was elected chairman of the Iowa State Roosters club of the Brotherhood of Railway Trainmen and Sioux City was chosen as the 1938 convention city at the close of the annual convention. Jones succeeds W. J. Higgins of Council Bluffs.
Indianola Dr John W Bickett of Newton retires as moderator and is elected synodical superintendent of missions for the United Presbyterian Church in the Synod of Iowa at the seventy eighth annual session. He succeeds Dr E K Kimmelshue of Des Moines who resigned after 16 years in that office.
Des Moines budget for the Community Chest is set at 421930 with John R. Ford noting the figure exceeds last year by 610. The budget will guide the annual campaign scheduled from November 12 to 20.
M Sheridan files an answer to the damage suit by M F York seeking about 8000 dollars. Both men were injured when their trucks collided on Highway 63 near Bloomfield on April 13.
A 14 year old boy admitted firing a slingshot from the balcony at chorus girls in the Town theater. Officers placed him in custody with Probation Officer Stanley Jones. The girls complained of sore spots while the boy said he was having fun, and his aim was described as remarkably accurate.
Mrs. Helen Sol berg Smith spoke at the Indianola branch of the American Association of University Women inaugurating the centennial of women’s college education. She noted Oberlin accepted women in 1871, and described 1873 rules requiring rising at 5 a.m. and retiring at 10 p.m., with prayer at meals, and anatomy classes as the hardest course. She also recounted Oberlin’s early telegraph gift and concerns about late hours for ladies viewing anatomy.
Mrs A H Essley died at 7 AM at her home 111 South Avenue BR. Private funeral set for 2:30 PM Saturday at the home with Rev Vernon H Carter officiating. Burial in Elm Grove cemetery. Arrangements by Sherman’s funeral home.
Washington Oct 7 The possibility of a November special session to confront anti new dealer factions within the Democratic Party signals a coming purge. Early tests of strength in both Senate and House were anticipated as the session looms.
Tib Mortimore leaves Roberta barber shop after a year’s work to move with his family to California or Arizona around October 20. Mrs. Edgar Wise and daughter accompany the family to visit relatives in Lone Beach, California. Fred Ashmead of Bloomfield becomes the new barber replacing Mortimore.
Iowa announced county agricultural warehouse boards to supervise the corn sealing program tied to a new federal corn loan plan. Boards, mostly three members, appoint inspectors and approve warehouse certificates usable as loan security. Appointments for four counties remain pending.
Albert Orcutt, manager of the Pigely Wiggly, announces the purchase of the Just Rite shop near the American Pearl Button Co. The store will be renamed Just Rite Grocery and operate as a unit through Orcutt’s downtown Pigely Wiggly.
Washington county’s 1937 road construction program is nearly finished after the October board of supervisors meeting. The Havre road stretch from No 2 toward Havre is 5 miles. grading and rock surfacing follow with about ten days needed for completion and two to three days for rock placement.
The Iowa Conservation Commission announces 50 state owned areas totaling about 25 000 acres opened for hunting with public access and posted reminders to observe game laws. Areas span Allamakee Buena Vista Clay Dickinson Emmet Greene Hancock Hamilton Monona Osceola Pocahontas Wright and others across numerous lakes and counties.
Farmers from all Iowa sections will come to Sioux City October 18 to 20 for a legislative hearing on agricultural issues. The event is organized by county and state farm bureaus under invitation from congressional leaders. Francis Johnson of the Iowa Farm Bureau Federation urges farmers to contact their congressman and Vincent Harrington as plans are finalized. The Farm Bureau seeks to advance act principles introduced last session and urges Roosevelt to convene an extra Congress session to pass farm legislation.
The Yankees defeated the Giants 8 to 1 to take a 2 0 lead in the series. Melton Coffman and Gumbert were hit hard by New York hitters, while Ruffing pitched the entire game for the Yankees. The Giants scored their lone run in the first inning and threatened in the ninth before final outs.
Mrs Barbara Hopkins wife of Harry L. Hopkins died today at Garfield hospital after a month of hospitalization and a year of declining health. The former Barbara Pearson was aged about the early seventies. Funeral arrangements were pending.
Iowa's road fatality count rose to 386 as William H. Young, 47, of Des Moines, died from injuries after a car collided with a gravel truck driven by Roe Davis, 39, near Huxley.
Prof G R Ramsey of Iowa State College extension forestry service in Washington promotes a state college tree distribution for farmers. Orders due soon for species including black locust black walnut green ash soft maple American elm red oak burr oak white oak and basswood with prices 1 50 to 3 per thousand. Most are one year seedlings and ash elm are two year transplants.
Italian dictator Benito Mussolini, who arrived in Chicago from Hollywood, said he hopes to visit President Roosevelt before returning to Italy and plans to spend a week in New York.
An explosion at the Wolf Run coal mine in Steubenville Ohio kills two workers. The blast injuries burn the victims almost beyond recognition and rescue teams search the shaft.
The Knights of Pythias invite members to a stag meeting at the K I hall this evening. Entertainment and lunch will be provided.
Rev Paschal Barry of Chicago will give a series of talks on Christianity at St James Church starting Sunday October 10 and continuing each evening to Sunday October 17. Sessions begin 745 pm with a question box at the rear for audience queries. Quotations used will be from the King James Bible.
