Senator Gerald Nye of North Dakota will address Cornell College at Mt. Vernon on October 19 during the fourth annual forum conference. The event gathers regional leaders and students for discussions.
Lawrence Daw son of Waterloo will succeed Robert E. Estlund of Fort Dodge as president of the Loyal Order of Moose. He was named president at the twenty fourth annual convention here and Odlwain was named as the 1938 meeting place.
Ottumwa reports Dorothy Brewer, 14, in hospital recovering from leg wounds after a gun held by her 15 year old brother Bubbs discharged accidentally.
Waterloo railroad employees will get about $30,000 more in annual payrolls due to a 44 cent daily wage increase granted to members of five operating railroad brotherhoods.
A Shenandoah resident recalls hometown ties as an heir of the Jack Crose estate may fund a community building. Crose, a pioneer merchant, died in California. After debts and bequests, $10,000 allocates to mortgage and expenses. the bulk of the estate consists of 52 acres being landscaped for a city addition.
Charles Meyers of Omaha pleaded guilty to leaving the scene after his car struck two boys on a bicycle at River Sioux. One boy remained in critical condition. Judge Tinley warned additional charges could be filed if the boy dies.
Iowa City Mayor Myron J. Walker charged a state milk sanitarian report as unfair false and misleading He said local milk is first checked by the city milk inspector then tested by the state bacteriology laboratories at the State University of Iowa City.
The 14 year old bride of Elvin Heiman 27 arrives at the Cass county courthouse to marry but is sent back to obtain parental consent from Jennie Weaver the girl's mother and father. The couple previously came from near Griswold to wed near the courthouse but must obtain the parents approval first.
Marshalltown attorney L Meeker traded a fur coat for a two cylinder horseless carriage found near Port Wing Wisconsin. He plans to use the vehicle for parades and limited public appearances, noting the car is in fine running order.
Mrs Grace Galloway Clouse was granted a divorce in district court from Harold Galloway and from Harold Clouse. She wed Galloway at Clear Lake in 1930 and later learned his true name was Clouse. The couple, now Mr and Mrs Clouse, married again in Covington Kentucky in August 1931. The decrees tested the dual matrimonial status.
The 1906 model field gun, weighing 7400 pounds with a 4.7 inch bore, used in France in the world war, was installed today in the front yard of the city hall by Leon Beatty post of the American Legion. The gun will remain conditionally and may receive concrete blocks under its wheels. the city council approved the display.
New York stock market regained after a dip of one to five dollars a share in early deals to new yearly lows in steel and other stocks. Losses were wiped out with gains up to about four dollars in Douglas Aircraft and United States Steel recovering two of a three dollar drop. General Motors and Chrysler also gained.
Des Moines reports say much of Iowa corn is still too moist to husk and warm weather hinders pile up in cribs. Rain was sparse, with cloudy spells and slow drying. Soybeans dried slowly but yields were generally good, with no beans too moist for bin storage. Fall plowing and winter wheat seeding delayed by dry ground.
Forty two consecrated men who organize Sunday schools in neglected rural districts closed a conference in Washington Iowa. They depart for six Midwestern states after an inspirational meeting at the Presbyterian church.
Washington city council held a special session with William Huff of Davenport NYA supervisor to discuss a National Youth Administration street marking project. No action taken. next week Huff to present a definite cost estimate and feasibility review for employing youths to letter street names.
Pastor Carl W. Klein chairs a southeastern Iowa ministers’ gathering inviting Reformed and Evangelical church leaders from this region and nearby Illinois. About twenty pastors attend with a morning session at ten, dinner at noon, golf, possible devotional, and an informal afternoon, ending with church supper.
Arthur Anderson 44, father of twelve, faces a statutory rape charge in Keokuk county district court Sigourney. Trial scheduled for Monday at 1 30 p m with Judge P J Siegers presiding. County Attorney Ralph Goeldner prosecutes. L J Kehoe of Washington defends. Anderson jailed since July 22 after Wellman arrest on a complaint by a Wellman girl. Crime alleged near Kinross Keokuk county. Mr and Mrs E O Newell Columbus Junction visited Washington today.
At a Leon Beatty post meeting the question of paying dues with corn was raised. Dale Atkinson offered three bushels and Ralph Moothart agreed to buy them to cover his dues. Members may pay three-dollar dues by turning over grain to Clarence Phillips by October 18. The post aims for 175 paid by year end and past year’s overquota. Also voted ten dollars for the school milk fund and staged WWI songs led by Manton Hebner with Tracy Phillips at the piano.
A beer license for Joe's Tavern on North Iowa avenue runs to tomorrow October 7. Washington had seven licenses earlier in the year starting July 1, but the Simming license lasts three months longer than the others.
John D. Zug becomes manager of the Des Moines news bureau for the Iowa Daily Press association replacing Chet Billings who resigned. Zug has held posts at International News Service and Des Moines bureaus of Associated Press and United Press, with journalism across legislature police and sports coverage. The IDPA serves 30 Iowa daily newspapers and is based at 405 Shops building at Bight and Walnut streets.
State agents county sheriff and county attorney prepared to question Paul Verner 19 in the murder of his stepfather Frank Jayre 65 whose body was found slumped over a phonograph at his Spencer Iowa home. The man had been dead since Sunday.
New York Yankees beat the New York Giants 8 to 1 at Yankee Stadium to take a 1 0 lead in the World Series. Gomez held the line for the AL squad as Hubbell was knocked out in the sixth after a flurry of Yankee hits including a Gehrig walk and a Tory Lazarri homer.
Word reached here of the death of Miss Cora E. Stewart at her Bonham Texas home yesterday. She was born June 7 1866 in Washington and raised there. She was the sister of Mrs Mary Grecian and is survived by that one immediate relative the telegram noted. Funeral plans were not yet announced.
The Rendezvous ballroom in Washington is remodeled for a grand opening this Friday. DeMolay organizers led by Roy Means announce Friday dances with bands booked through March and a nine piece orchestra from LaSalle, IL to perform at the opening.
Glen Florence 44, a Methodist, becomes manager of the Jay Brewer dairy plant on West Madison Street. He moves to Washington to make it his permanent home after several years with Gustafson Dairy at Burlington and arrives highly recommended.
