In Cedar Rapids two youths aged 14 and 16 fled from Patrolman Walsh under gunfire before police caught them. The pair confessed that they stole cars “just for the fun of it” and were handed to juvenile authorities for handling.
Former Illinois governor Frank O. Lowden told about 2 000 in Waterloo that Alf M. Landon is the agricultural candidate. He said Landon understands and sympathizes with farmers and their interests and aspirations, a sentiment long favored by Iowa farmers.
Ottumwa will install parking meters as the first Iowa city to try the system. The council accepted a four month trial with Dual Parking Meter Co. Mayor Edward Manning said the meters aim to relieve downtown congestion by increasing turnover. If unsatisfactory, the company will remove them at no cost.
In Des Moines the largest Iowa law student cohort begins state bar exams. Among 82 examinees two are women. Tests take place in the Iowa House chamber within the state capitol.
Col. Theodore Roosevelt Jr will arrive in Des Moines en route to Marshalltown to speak at the Talleorn exposition. He will be met by Marshall county Republicans and driven to Marshalltown by auto. Waterloo news notes Donald O Smith 290 son of Mr and Mrs Lloyd Smith was electrocytes.
DES MOINES. There will be no delay in delivering checks to Iowa applicants for rural rehabilitation grants and loans. Governor Eerring was assured in a call with a regional Indianapolis office. Since July 1, 1,055 applications have been filed. money has been received on 622. Of the 433 in process, 377 are grants and 39 are loans. One application dates back to Sept 21 and 10 Sept 26.
Finger prints from an Iowa robbery homicide identified as belonging to Joseph Acerra, 26, held in Cambridge with George Biggs, 42. The prints came from an electric socket used during the assault on Elizabeth Cairns, 69, at Jefferson Iowa, strengthening extradition actions while Acerra and Biggs deny involvement.
A boy attempted to grab a hanging electric wire over a sidewalk leaving his left hand severely damaged by the shock. Fire department rescue squads worked for about an hour to free him and render aid.
The Four square church hosted Charles Haimovits, a California Jewish evangelist, for the first sermon drawing a large crowd. Pastor W J Stevens urged city residents to attend while praising Haimovits native of Palestine and his interdenominational message. Tonight’s topic is If Christ Should Come to.
State and district Democratic leaders gather in Washington for a conference on campaigning in Iowa first district’s eleven counties. Over 400 invited attendees, with a three o'clock session and dinner featuring Maplecrest turkey. Notables include Guy Mullette, John Valentine, Mrs. Alex Miller, C. W. Storms, M. P. Conway, and party officials Eicher Hart Utterback Birmingham Kelleher Baxter.
The federal census data show Iowa retail sales up 35 percent from 1933 to 1935 totaling 646.211 million dollars across 38 932 stores, with an 18 percent payroll rise to 55.59 million and employment up 10 percent.

Funeral services for Mrs. Alois B. Musil are set for Thursday at 10 a.m. at L. A. Jones funeral home with Dr. F W Eastwood to officiate. Burial follows at Cedar Rapids Bohemian National Cemetery at 1 p.m. beside her husband who died in a March run away accident. Barbara Anne Hodny born near Prague July 18 1887 immigrated to the U S with family, married Alois B Musil in Chicago January 26 1910, later living in Washington County. She leaves eleven children.
Ottumwa Iowa October 7 an 18 year old William H Hodson was shot in the leg by a watchman at the John Morrell packing company grounds. Hodson s companion Paul West 20 was jailed 30 days after pleading guilty to attempted larceny and trespass. The watchman said the pair entered and fled when challenged with Hodson slightly wounded and treated at a hospital.
Des Moines Oct 7. With the pheasant population cut by severe winter and summer, the Iowa conservation commission ruled no pheasant shooting this fall. Commissioners said it is best to allow the population to rebuild for next year after receiving hundreds of letters from northern Iowa requesting a ban for 1936.
Harry Simpson was elected commander of the Leon Beatty post American Legion, succeeding Carl Voorhees. W S McKeown became vice commander, S W Easter adjutant, Cloyece Stewart historian, Fred Downing publicity officer, Harland Mead chaplain, Everette Burham finance officer, Ed Squire sergeant at arms, and Howard Miller re elected finance officer. Dale Atkinson Carl Voorhees and Everette Burham named as executive board members. The group planned a district meeting for Oct 27 with drum corps from several posts and a banquet at the country club.
Mrs. Lloya Anderson Sylvia Georgia Emily Libbie Mildred Alois Vilasta Barbara and Ella and Elsie twins are children. Anna Marie daughter died six years ago. Granddaughter Patricia Ann Anderson survives. Brother Rudolph Hodny and sisters Rose Zaborsky Viasta Smuthy Libbie Hodny, all of Chicago, survive.
At Crawfordsville Iowa on October seven two United Presbyterian leaders resigned from long held roles. Dr A L Davidson of Coin Iowa stepped down as state clerk after 33 years service and Dr B E F Kimmelshue of Des Moines retired as synodical Superintendent of missions after 16 years. The session drew strong attendance and featured sermons and reports on colleges and seminaries.
Preliminaries for Washingtons third Amateur Night have been moved up with the first on October 22 at 7:30 p.m. at the Y M C A. The second on October 29 and the third on November 6 will follow, with committees named by Ted Brown and increased prize money to attract top talent.
President Roosevelt departs Washington for a west and central tour visiting Iowa Minnesota Nebraska Wyoming Colorado Kansas Missouri Illinois Michigan Ohio and New York. He will speak in Omaha and Chicago and make regional appearances with a stop in Dubuque Iowa Friday morning for 45 minutes. Senator George Morris of Nebraska plans to board at Afton joining the train heading to Omaha for a major speech.
Al Jenkins noted race driver travels from Salt Lake City to New York City with a $40,000 racing automobile on a specially constructed motor truck. The complete unit, including truck, is valued at more than $70,000 according to chief mechanic Bill Oliver who drives the truck.
Relatives report the death of William H. Donaldson born 1856 in Ohio and long tied to Living Lake community. He died at his Fort Collins Colorado home after a life that included church singing and farming in Iowa and South Dakota. He leaves widow Margaret Neill and two children Beatrice Smith and Neill Donaldson.
