About 658 Washington County 4-H members and leaders take part in National 4-H Week October 5 11 with 35 clubs and adult volunteers listed for 1975. New members welcomed. eligibility includes those who turned nine by September 15 and contact details for joining provided.
Japanese Emperor Hirohito and Empress Nagako attended a Jets vs Patriots game at Shea Stadium before 55 000 fans. Ambassador Takashi Yasukawa explained the action while the royal couple toured the United Nations. The emperor left before final score 36-7, expressing excitement yet difficulty in understanding football.
Schools Supt. E Kelly Schlapkohl will present formal recommendations on graduation requirements at the Washington Board of Education meeting in the School Administration Building at 7 30 p m Wednesday. The proposal from the Curriculum Council aims to raise credits and require math and science courses, facing opposition from High School Principal Burge Hammond. The session also includes routine agenda items.
Dean M. Lintz a 23 year old from rural Washington pleaded guilty in Washington County District Court to two counts of possessing marijuana. Judge Ira F. Morrison scheduled sentencing for Oct 29 after a pre sentence investigation. Prosecutor says several harsher charges were dropped in plea negotiations.
In Des Moines a third major fire in two weeks struck the Gateway Opportunity Center on Forest Avenue near 8th Street. Officials plan to inspect the burned building for arson while a firefighter was briefly treated after a collapse injury. The Center suspects repeated arson attempts amid a string of blazes in the neighborhood.
Richard H. Meeks of Ainsworth began work today as chief radio dispatcher in the Washington County sheriff s office. Meeks, 30, had worked as a furniture and appliance salesman the past 18 months, replacing John Reneger who resigned Friday.
A 10 week class for Washington County residents begins Wednesday offering instruction on better parenting. Led by Elizabeth Mills of Iowa City, the sessions run 1 to 2 30 p m on consecutive Wednesdays with a sliding fee based on income. The first session requires registration at the counseling services office in the courthouse basement.
Washington volunteer firemen open Fire Prevention Week with a 1 p.m. program at St James School. They toured with a fire truck, held a drill and showed two films. Nine trophies were given to St James poster winners. Similar events are planned at Lincoln and Stewart elementaries. The department urges participation in Operation Edith on Wednesday at 7 p.m. with siren checks and porch light tests. The week ends with a firemen's dance at the K C Hall Saturday.
Des Moines bureau report: Gayle Adrian, 22, a former Quad Cities Times obituary writer and assistant night editor, joined two other women as the first female troopers sworn in by the Iowa Highway Patrol. Adrian, daughter of Tri-States Trucking president Gerald Adrian, said she pursued law enforcement after covering police activity and hopes to prove she can perform like any recruit.
Three survivors from a Friday night crash near Washington remain in hospital in Iowa City. Edith Pacini and Vincent Pacini of Alhambra California are listed in critical and serious condition respectively. Gary Janecek of rural Washington survived the crash. sister in law Mrs Elon Pierce of Alhambra died. William Mundt of Goddard Kansas was hospitalized but not seriously injured. Funeral services for Janecek were held locally. Authorities attributed the crash to Janecek attempting to pass a line of cars and both cars swerving. Deputy Schmidt praised volunteers and crews for rapid response and commended local law enforcement and residents for their cooperation.
