A federal grand jury charged three San Francisco tax specialists in a 23 count indictment for creating $1.4 million in false income tax deductions via Caribbean business transactions. Beneficiaries included Dr. Sammy Lee Barbara McNair and Edward O Thorp among others. The scheme used 22 companies and involved Banco Popular Antillano. The trio faces prison and fines up to 71 years and $120000 respectively. the bank could be fined $10000. All defendants are charged with conspiracy.

Firemen to visit three Washington schools for drills and prizes
Washington firemen will visit St. James, Lincoln and Stewart elementary schools next week to aid fire drills and hand out trophies in a fire prevention poster contest for fourth through sixth graders. Nine trophies will be awarded with each grade winner advancing to a state competition.

Four more Cedar Rapids men arrested in rape case
Cedar Rapids police said Craig Gardner and Jack Pyle, both suspects in rapes of two 15 year old girls on Tuesday, were among four more men arrested Friday. Two other suspects, Jack Simpson and a 17 year old youth, were charged with assaults on two other women. Police noted ten alleged rapes in the past week, higher than the usual rate of about one per week.
