Two Hedrick boys stricken with infantile paralysis in the last two days were reported to be in improved condition. Hubert Gambell six, son of Mr and Mrs R E Gambell, and Roger Doak ten, son of Mr and Mrs Frank Doak, are the affected children.
Officials say Mrs. Herman Fredricks, 62, was found deceased in a water tank on the Fredricks farm southeast of Farnhamville. Death attributed to drowning and ruled as death by own action. She had been in ill health.
Tony Gasperovich, 21, was stabbed in the lounge of radio station WHO in Des Moines and taken to Broadlawns General Hospital with serious wounds. He accused James Babbitt, 59, of slashing him with a long knife. doctors sealed a 50 stitch facial wound from forehead to cheek.
CEDAR RAPIDS The state board of appeal headed by Comptroller Fred Porter took under advisement objections to the Cedar Rapids school district budget for 1940. John Wagner leading protesting taxpayers claimed $100000 could be deducted without endangering financial policies.
Adam Y. Berry, 83, a Macedonia farmer, began schooling at 71 and learned to read and write with a teacher’s praise. He disposed of a large Silver Creek township farm and moved to Council Bluffs to pursue education. Burial plans to be in Macedonia.
Des Moines Iowa historic romance couple George Goben aged 93 and his wife will travel 43 miles by special car to Des Moines for a world premiere of Walter Wanger's Eternally Yours. They have been married 78 years and were named national romance champions by Wanger Studios in a four month survey. They had planned a New York trip but due to illness in their family the premiere comes to Des Moines, with a cash award replacing the trip. The event marks their recognition and a local premiere arrangement.
AMES The State Highway Commission endorsed the safety program formed by Gov. George A. Wilsons traffic safety coordinating committee. It will study current and future highway traffic safety needs and approve erecting guide and warning signs for traffic control.
Ford Motor Company unveils its 1940 line including Ford V-8 Mercury Lincoln-Zephyr and Lincoln. G. E. Mace Ford dealer glosses display after days of preparation and invites the public to inspect the new models this Friday.
A petition with 84 signatures asked the Wallace School in Washington Iowa to remain a regular grade school. The Washington board of education rejected the request, citing plans to consolidate pupils into two new buildings after Lincoln is completed.

Monte Pearson pitched the New York Yankees to a 4 0 victory over the Cincinnati Reds in the second game of the World Series at Yankee Stadium. The Yankees scored three runs in the third and added one in the fourth on a Dabgrens home run. Walters was limited to two hits through seven and a half innings before two singles. It marked Pearson s fourth World Series win and the first time since 1906 a pitcher held an opponent to two or fewer hits in a series game.
Mr and Mrs Tom Berdo spent today in Davenport with friends visiting local sites and enjoying the afternoon.
In Chicago on October 5 a baby was born to a mother who was in an iron lung after being found suffering from infantile paralysis. The mother Mrs. Gertrude Epstein and the newborn survived the operation in good condition.
In Des Moines three hurt and one dead after a gasoline powered train from Chicago and Great Western strikes a fruit truck at a grade crossing in East Des Moines. The truck owner Homer Perkins 47 Carlisle died in the crash.
Detroit October 5 General Motors Corporation today denied a request by the United Automobile Workers union for a meeting or concessions in the ongoing labor dispute. The company stated no further talks would be scheduled at this time.
Berlin reports that German pursuit planes and anti-aircraft guns destroyed 27 British and 45 French aircraft in the war’s first month. It cites a Sept 30 aerial battle with 21 British and French planes down on the western front and two in the North Sea.
