A column about Iowa notes the Tallcorn Exposition opening with the "Shocks of 1938" feature in Marshalltown. Despite unfavorable weather Memorial Colis eum drew a crowd almost too large for the modest viewing space.
In Wapello six year old Freddy Franklin was found dead in bed after falling ill Sunday. An autopsy could not determine the cause and the body will be sent to Town City for further examination.
Waterloo resident David Kushner aged 37 was found dead in a blaze at his home after firefighters responded to a call. Gas jets in the garage were open and gas seepage from the kitchen to a basement pilot light caused a $1,000 explosion and fire. Coroner ruled death by self-inflicted causes. Kushner formerly lived in Cedar Rapids and is survived by his wife.
Deputy Larry Condon pursues a thief amid notes of worry after an old fashioned foot-pedal organ disappears from Palo near Lewis Bottom church. A nearby householder reports seeing a truck backed to a church window as the missing instrument mystery unfolds.
Martin Warren 20, son of Mr and Mrs Will Warren from near Iowa City, was named outstanding 4-H dairy club member for the second straight year at the Waterloo Dairy Cattle Cape era award. He led the club team judging contest with the highest score at the Waterloo show.
Winterset authorities report Ralph Stuart 42 a township road maintenance worker died when the caterpillar tractor he was driving overturned into a ditch about five miles southwest of here.
R. W. Sheppard of Omaha told the Northwest Iowa Harness Dealers association fall meeting in Sioux City that despite the tractor and sleeping sickness, many horses remain on farms. He cited hundreds of colts and said eastern Iowa Illinois and Wisconsin harness demand is strong as farmers value good teams.
J B Stahl, northwest missionary attending the American Sunday School Union convention at the Presbyterian church, visited the Journal office to correct a report. He says Dakotas grasshoppers and Mormon crickets do not reach one to two feet but maximum three inches in length.
Rev I Fredmund, new Baptist pastor in Washington, says this is the second time he has followed Rev M C Carstensen in a pastorate. Carstensen once led the large Albert Lea Minnesota church before Fredmund was called, and he stayed five years there. Carstensen resigned last spring and Fredmund preached his first sermon as Baptist pastor in Washington last Sunday.
Washington city council approved a detailed milk regulation ordinance to ensure pure milk for residents. The measure covers production, sanitation, pasteurization, labeling, and delivery, with monthly health inspections, fines up to 100 dollars, and enforcement shared with the county health unit.
Iowa City jeweler Hands was elected president of the Iowa Retail Jewelers Association as the convention closed in Marshalltown. The board was expanded from three to five, about 150 jewelers and their wives attended, and Cedar Rapids was named as the 1938 convention city.
Joe Simmering submitted an application to renew his beer license for North Iowa avenue accompanied by the required bond but the council postponed ruling. The council will investigate before acting with Mr Simmering's license expiring October 7 and a special meeting called by Mayor Lloyd Lyte to receive the committee report. Other licenses were approved for July 1 start dates.
A Leon Beatty post American Legion group travelled to the Rock Island arsenal with a truck to retrieve an obsolete cannon donated for city decoration. Fred Downing spoke to the city council, proposing placement on city property. The public grounds committee led by John Squire will decide, with a return visit expected later today.
The United Presbyterian synod of Iowa met in Indianola with about 100 delegates. Rev W Greer McCrary of Cedar Rapids was elected moderator to preside in the remaining sessions. Rev John T Haunt of Goldfield was chosen vice moderator and Rev W C Porter of Waterloo as reporter. Dr John W Bickett preached the opening sermon. Dr E F Kimmelshue reported 7,669 members in Iowa with a net gain of 122. Other speakers included Dr J A Thompson and Dr H J Rose.
Fourteen Iowa farmers will speak at a Senate Agriculture Committee hearing in Sioux City next week. Attending are Senator Clyde Herring, Rep. W. F Jacobsen, Rep. E. C Richer, and Iowa Farm Bureau federation President Francis Johnson with delegates including Allen B. Kline, Fletcher Aitcheson, Harold Teachout, Ed Doolittle, C. W. Huntley, Lester Gillette, A B E Hursh, Milfard Beegtly, Oscar Haline, Claire BE Becker, Raymond Sayre, and J. H. Anderson.
September brought Washington residents a mix of heat and cold with no significant rainfall. Temperatures peaked at 96 degrees on the 2nd and 8th while dipping to 32 on the 26th. Rain totaled only .94 inches, far below normal for the month.
The gun and carriage, 25 feet long and six feet eight inches wide, may be placed on city hall grounds or in Central Park temporarily while a permanent location is decided. Mr. Downing provided the dimensions and plan details.
Jackson township 4-H boys met at the home of James and Richard Birney. Speakers included William Walker on the State Fair judging team Delbert Foster on the Waterloo Cattle Congress and Raymond Pell on the State Fair. Mrs Homer Burney served refreshments to six boys.
Mr and Mrs Fred L Stewart arrived home last night from Madison Wisconsin where they spent the weekend with their daughter Mrs Hazel Alberson.
Dr Elliot D Parkhill of Philadelphia secretary of missions for the American Sunday School Union urged missionaries and friends at a Presbyterian church conference to return to New Testament living. He warned of centuries of Christian decline, urged meek adherence to Pauls Love Chapter, and urged the church to move in the direction it chooses. A lively song service preceded the sermon led by Rev Harmon and featured piano by Rev Anderson with a quartet by Mr Knapp and Mr Nelson.
From Ipswich South Dakota Rev L L Knapp and family live in a Mobile home during spring and fall while conducting Daily Vacation Bible School and evangelistic services. His 21 year old son preaches as they travel. Conference notes highlight large gatherings in Southern Illinois peach district with up to a thousand attendees across 32 Sunday schools.
Unimpeachable sources say Bruno Mussolini, Italy’s premier’s son, fights with the rebel air forces in Spain. He serves in the same squadron with the premier’s pilot, bases at Majorca, and is linked to raids on Valencia and Barcelona. The premier approved his departure despite family protests.
Washington city council weighs a plan to place street name signs at intersections. William E. Huff of Davenport proposes NYA workers paint street names on boards using city lumber. Burlington saved cost with eleven cent per sign, Washington expected similar pricing. Metal corner signs from years past have faded or disappeared.
Councilman Dupuis urged tests to locate a shallower water source with softer quality than the city supply. If feasible and affordable, mixed well water could yield a softer product than current hard Washington water, a plan supported by several councilors.
