Wendell A. Schuk a 25 year old janitor from Royal Iowa pleaded guilty to larceny by district judge F C Davidson at Spirit Lake He admitted stealing 60 dollars from the superintendent desk last Friday and received a five year suspended prison sentence
A peat ground fire on the Mrs. O. F. Bastian farm north of Humboldt, fanned by high winds, threatened nearby corn fields. Firemen, on the fourth call since Saturday, brought the blaze under control.
Robert Bell, a farmer near Wiota, sold 116 fat hogs to Burke Bros. of Anita on September 6 at 8.60 per hundredweight. The sale, timed during a wartime market spike, yielded $2,415 in net proceeds.
In Burlington a mother quickly pulled 2 year old Sherry Darrah from a pail of hot water and applied first aid, sparing serious injury. The child is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Darrah and was beside the pail when the incident occurred.
On the 640 acre Sayres farm near Hobarton a 90,000 bushel rat proof moisture proof crib for shelled corn stands ready. W H Ehrhardt and Mart Elmore each hold half a section tenancy and own the crib jointly with the owner. The 1938 government sealed corn was graded No 2 with 10.96 percent moisture after resealing for 1939 crop storage.
State Center theater manager Kd W T Hill arrived in Des Moines with a horse and wagon to collect the film Pride of the Blue Grass. The world premiere was set at State Center a Hollywood publicity gimmick labeling the town a one horse town. Hill said pioneers resented the label and that the trip of roughly 45 miles took about half a day. He admitted he used another mode of transport for the return trip.
At the Leon Beatty post meeting Commander Bobe Kurtz named A Ralston Harland Mead and Preston Wolf to form a committee for Armistice Day observance. Reports from six of nine members included Harry Simpson showing color motion pictures of Chicago Legion parade and the Centennial parade here last month.
Sheriff H. M. Putnam reported multiple complaints of linoleum fraud where buyers paid cash, contractors promised to lay the floor later, but the material was poor quality and not the promised size. Investigators found no Iowa City company behind the sales.
Federal meteorologist Charles D. Reed reports killing frosts in Iowa came six days earlier than usual but caused little crop damage. Heat in September hastened maturity and dried corn cobs, aiding cribbing and storage of shelled corn in bins.
Chicago reports private crop experts project the year corn yield at 2.477 billion bushels, down 65 million from last year and 46 million below the September 1 government estimate.
The sheriff reports no knowledge of a concern tied to a residence listed in records. Neighbors say occupants are unaware, and no disturbance or incident has been verified at the property. Local authorities secured information and confirmed the address belongs to a private home.
Berlin reports say Germany will press a peace offensive and test Allied offers in Hitler's Reichstag speech. If rejected, Germany would consult Russia and Italy on next steps. A Russia-Poland protectorate claim is dismissed as invention. Hull warns ships to avoid belligerent waters. Dominion ministers to Britain will coordinate imperial war measures.
The Farmers' Mutual fire truck driven by John Custer extinguished a grass fire yesterday afternoon at Ralph Belief farm 13 miles southwest of Washington. Started by a spark from a passing train, the blaze burned six to eight acres and damaged several rods of fencing. Firefighters quickly contained the fire, preventing spread to nearby crops.
Ottumwa resident Jay Lannon traveled to Washington yesterday on a business visit, meeting with regional officials to discuss Commerce Department opportunities and potential investment.
Sir Reginald Hugh Dorman-Smith, the UK agriculture minister, relayed a whispered tale on a radio broadcast from London dated October 4. He claimed the Gestapo devised a death sentence method by forcing a blindfolded man to hold butter in one hand and bacon in the other, with the man dying from shock when the blindfold is removed.
New York Yankees beat the Cincinnati Reds 2 to 1 in the World Series opener before about 60 000. Keller forced home the winning run in the ninth after DiMaggio was passed as Dickey delivered a run scoring single. McCormick drove in Cincinnati’s run in the fourth. Gordon and Dahleren answered for New York in the fifth. Ruffing held Cincinnati to four hits. Derringer allowed six.
President G F E Mace announced that the Public Works Administration granted 5391 more for site purchases and grading grounds at Stewart and Lincoln grade schools. The total PWA allotment rose from 104211 to 109602, with 45 percent for sites, reducing future district costs as site work nears completion.
Charles Mullin of Smithfield Michigan visited the home of Mr and Mrs C F Anderson recently spending time as a guest at their residence during a social visit in town.
The Y's Men and Rotary clubs in Washington plan a joint meeting next Monday evening. Joe Connell of Sault Ste. Marie Canada will speak en route to Canada after attending a Y's Men regional conclave. The clubs also announce a Christmas invitation dance planned for Christmas night.
Dr W D Dwyer was elected a delegate to the state dental convention in Des Moines during the southeastern Iowa district dental meeting in Keokuk Monday and Tuesday. Dr and Mrs Dwyer returned last night from the two day meeting.
A district court jury found Howard Dawson guilty of obtaining money and property by false pretenses. Judge J. G. Patterson set Friday Oct 13 for sentencing. Dawson allegedly borrowed a horse from Dewey Weeks and sold it. defense says he bought the horse. This was the final jury case of the September term.
Seven of Washington county townships held meetings to elect representatives for the 1940 agricultural conservation program. Attendance ranged from seven to 31. Delegates and alternates were chosen in each township, with Bell, Morgan, Lambert and Tucker among those elected as delegates or alternates.
The Washington county poultry association announced its sixth annual show will be held December 6 7 8 and 9 with the quilt and rug show linked to the event. New features are planned for both poultry and quilt components as local hatcheries report high quality stock and more exhibitors are expected. Art Prall serves as president of the Washington county poultry association.
Senator Arthur Vandenberg of Michigan opposes repealing the arms embargo warning the U.S. could become an arsenal for belligerents. Senator Tom Connolly of Texas argues the neutrality act must change to keep the United States out of war and to prevent U S ships from being drawn into hostilities. Connolly, supporting administration aims, challenges Borah and others who fear war if embargo repeal proceeds.
Rev. Vernon Carter, pastor of the Washington Christian church, was elected president of the Washington county council of Christian education at the annual county convention in the Eicher Mennonite church. The report lists district vice presidents and officers including Raymond Lambert, Mrs. Clayde Knapp, Mrs. C. E. Morgan, Kk. H. Belt, Walter Leet, J. W. Rich, Mrs. Vernon Witting, and other leaders across multiple churches and divisions.
