Raymond Sparrowgrove 35 a railroad section foreman fatally wounded himself while cleaning a gun at his home. He was not married and lived with his grandfather and a married sister. Four Foot Husker Finds Iowa Corn Too Tall Des Moines Des Moines police questioned Kenneth Snapp 16 of Osgood Mo about lodging at the city jail after arriving to pick corn. Inspector Klund quipped about the boy’s height and job prospects noting the high corn season.
Sunday school pupils 1535 strong paraded in Shenandoah in the seventeenth annual demonstration. Shenandoah high school marching band Anéhutz's drum corps toy wagons with cradie roll members and a Builders class float from Methodist Sunday school added color.
Mr and Mrs Dorsey L Botham of Madison Wisconsin with two sets of twins Nip and Tuck aged 8 and Rosanne and Rosemary aged 10 months visit their maternal grandparents J and Mrs James J Glenn in Iowa City. Mr Botham is a 1931 alumnus of University of Town college of engineering.
Mrs James Welborn remains unconscious in Des Moines hospital after an auto-train collision at a crossing. A brain specialist who removed a blood clot reported the crash mother appearing a little better. Her baby, a boy born four hours after the crash, is one month old and gaining weight. The child is unnamed.
U S Professor Christ A Ruckmick of the University of Iowa unveils a machine named the Emotion Meter that measures emotional changes and photographs them. The device uses the left palm to gauge nervous stress during events, contrasting with common lie detectors.
Gus Minor, head of a Council Bluffs barber union, has disappeared while traveling from Long Beach California. His wife reports he telephoned J A True the local superintendent who notified her then. Minor cannot explain the trip and recalls nothing since the time of his disappearance.
Marriage licenses were issued Saturday at the courthouse to Niijem Orva Teets and Jessie Misel, both of Washington, with Konak of Hedrick and (illegible) also connected to the notice.

Charles City Iowa October 4 A work crew fight on a train between Charles City and Rudd left Jack O Conner in a Mason City hospital and Ed Underhill in jail. Sheriff D F Atherton said Underhill admitted slashing O Conner with a razor.
Burglars stole twenty five dollars from the Kirkville Iowa post office and took cigarettes from the Pike grocery after a Saturday night robbery. Local authorities investigated the incidents as separate crimes with scant additional details available.
Lila M. Hawk of Martinsburg Arthur B. Wright and Elizabeth Dickel of Wellman are listed among license recipients. The county has issued 101 licenses so far this year.
Sunday rally events drew 280 at the Methodist church with Rev. Paul Grames of Des Moines speaking on Sunday school work. Bible school attendance reached 168 at the Christian church, aided by Pleasant Hill congregation attendance.

In Fort Dodge Iowa Leslie Alexander 34 was jailed as police investigated a family quarrel that left 57 year old Joe Stuflick a former railway employee dead. Stuflick died from a blow attributed to Alexander who surrendered claiming self defense. Mrs Stuflick and her two sons Hedrick 17 and Leroy 14 reportedly took part in the brawl.
The Iowa highway fatality list for 1937 shows 384 deaths including Mrs. B. W. Newhouse, 33, of McIntyre, and Charles Larson, 74, of Sioux City. Newhouse died after a collision involving a car driven by C. D. Johnson of Lake Mills. Larson died from injuries received last Thursday when struck by a automobile.
Floyd Kirby and Bob Barr of Davenport were Sunday guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Holden.
Edward Schroeder heads the Boone Chamber of Commerce while Rev. A M Clarke is vice president of the Boone ministerial association. H J Van Ness serves as superintendent of Boone schools and Mrs James F Zug is president of the Women’s club with Mrs Ruth Boak leading the Boone W C.
Shanghai reports say Chiang Kai Shek forces held the front south of the city under heavy artillery fire and Japanese infantry and fifty tanks attacked, but China retired 1 000 to 1 500 yards to new lines. North of Shanghai Japanese advance continued unimpeded driving a large Chinese army toward the Yellow River.
Mrs Hiram Coakley is in a serious condition at Presby terian hospital Waterloo after a horse broke loose while she attended the Waterloo Dairy Cattle Congress. A crushed vertebra is reported and a back cast may be applied in ten to twelve days with a twelve week recovery expected.
Roberto Jaurez, 25, escaped from Webster county jail while facing deportation to Mexico. He and a companion were jailed on auto theft charges after a gun battle on August 12. Jaurez reportedly hid behind a cell block and battered down a door to flee during gate return.
Sioux City report says three men were seriously injured when concrete and steel at a new reservoir project collapsed. Foreman Bert Zigler was the most severely hurt.
Jimmy Christman of Muscatine the air show pilot who thrilled Cedar Rapids crowds last summer was killed during a stunt at an air circus. His plane failed to level after a snap roll at about 300 feet, crushing him in the cockpit as 3,500 spectators watched. Christman managed two snap rolls earlier, and his widow, children, and the crowd faced the tragedy as officials investigated the crash.
Federal mediator William H. Leisers announced a compromise wage settlement on Sunday night ending a dispute between railway labor and management. The agreement provides a 44 cent per day wage increase accepted by the five major brotherhoods, averting a nationwide strike by 300,000 operating employees. The deal covers 86 Class 1 railroads and costs about 27.5 million dollars annually, vs unions had sought 20 percent boosts which carriers said would reach 116 million annually.

Jefferson Iowa records show Leonard Lofstedt of Rippey died from injuries after an automobile collision yesterday raising Iowa highway fatalities to 885. The report lists Lofstedt among the latest deaths in the ongoing highway fatality total.
Des Moines Oct 4 Secretary of State Robert E O'Brien left his office after the northwest Iowa conference approved a recommendation that the former president of Morningside College take a pastorate or be deprived of his ministerial office.
