In Mason City the American Crystal Sugar plant starts its annual fall operation. Officials expect the plant to stay open about 80 to 90 days, marking a busy period for local production and employment.
Waterloo scene as Ralph A. Woodcock hears Howard Parker's workmen compensation claim against John son Farm dairy alleging a fall against a basket of milk bottles caused a bottle to break and sever Parker's larynx. The incident centers on alleged loss of voice and resulting injuries.
The Southeast Iowa Dentist Society elected officers at its annual session. Dr E. G. Rennie of Oskaloosa was named president, Dr M. W. Munger of Mount Pleasant the vice president, Dr A. B. Copeman of Ottumwa the treasurer, and Dr E. McClurg of Bloomfield the secretary.
Sheriff Roscoe Wales of Appanoose county served notice on Mayor W. R. Blakeslee and the city council members on behalf of the city service commission. The councilmen must recognize civil service for the police force or appear in district court in November to state their reasons for noncompliance.
Bruce Miracle, 45, of Barksboro, was crawling through a fence when his shotgun discharged and struck above the ankle. He crawled to a road where a motorist picked him up and took him to a hospital.
Mount Pleasant voters approve the city purchase of the former fairground tract for 6000 dollars. The 611 to 279 ballot sets aside a 39 acre site for park use and an athletic field. The complex includes 26 buildings and a roofed grandstand seating about 2500.
Residents hunted for a bright red model aircraft sent aloft from the local airport without a pilot. Charles Tschirgi Jr designed and built the ship, with Karl Hemminger piloting as it headed toward Waterloo at about 800 feet.
Police pursue a theory that two blasts are connected after a Des Moines Feed and Supply Co building was damaged and three hours later Jonas Du vall reported his truck exploded and was driven back through his garage doors. Detectives seek three men for questioning.
W C Jeffrey of Burlington an official of the Burlington railway there was slightly injured about noon today when the car he was driving was ditched at West Chester. The car ran onto the shoulder and struck a telephone pole. Mrs not injured. Mr Jeffrey had a bump on his head.
Burial services were held at Kirn Grove for the infant daughter of Mr and Mrs Clarence Berkhoff. Born yesterday at the county hospital the child did not survive. Rev William Nichol of the United Presbyterian Church led the services.
Chicago Cubs starter Bill Lee and New York Yankees ace Charles Ruffing were named to pitch the opening game. Lee led the NL with 22 victories and nine shutouts, while Ruffing topped the AL with 21 wins. Gabby Hartnett plans to use Lee early, with Dizzy Dean likely in game three and Clay Bryant slated for game two.
Washington county supervisors report nearing completion of this year’s road work. Remaining tasks include grading the Middleburg road in English River and three and a half miles in Highland townships. Oil has been applied to three miles of the old White Way, and to Crawfordsville to county line. Two miles of Coppock road prepared for oiling. About 40 miles of secondary roads may be oiled this year, delayed by material shortages.
The Des Moines National Bank and Trust Co. bid $127,000 for Washington Independent School District bonds sold at city hall yesterday afternoon. Proceeds fund two new grade schools voted August 24, with 45 percent of costs covered by PWA funds. Interest rate on the sale is 2.5 percent.
Members consider enacting a curfew or enforcing an old ordinance to require youths to be home by nine. No action yet, but discussion may continue in future meetings.
The state of Iowa settled on a jury for the trial of James Gardner of Wellman charged with assault with intent to commit great bodily injury. Opening statements described an incident on July 5 near Wellman involving cattle, a dispute, and a broken jaw. J. E. White testified as the first witness and the state anticipated six to seven witnesses.
Nine bidders including Shaw McDermot Spark Des Moines and others competed in a two hour auction with 27 rounds. The first maturity is 1940 and installments extend to 1953. The sale, prompted by favorable rates, will save the district money compared with last week amid war scare rates.
Entries of corn begin to come in for the first annual Dutch Creek corn show opening tomorrow at the Dutch Creek fair grounds. General Chairman Carl W. Klein says grounds are ready and display racks will handle thousands of cars. Tickets for a Wednesday fried chicken supper at Phillips & Hebner drug store and a program with political speeches and home talent play are planned.
At yesterday evening's meeting the city council reviewed taking out insurance on the boilers of the heating plant at the city hall. The matter was referred to the house committee consisting of Councilmen John Squire, Carl Hedges and Dr. O F Boller.
Sanitary engineer R. J. Schliekelman told the city council that local dairies are cooperating with the milk ordinance. Dairies have built new milk houses and concrete barn floors to meet requirements. Inspections will publish official grades by October 22 and a plentiful Grade A milk supply is expected. further inspections of restaurants and soda fountains are planned this month. Some dairies use new caps indicating pasteurized or raw milk.
Washington city faces a proposed bicycle regulation to govern ownership licensing and use on sidewalks and streets. George Mohr and Harland Mead urged the ordinance, citing safety concerns and the Oska loosa model, with council agreeing to refer to the ordinance committee and city solicitor for action.
A Washington county debt adjustment committee meeting chaired by Attorney Theodore B. Bailey will be held Friday at 1 pm at the farm security administration office in the old National bank building on the northeast corner of the square. Citizens with debt problems seeking advice may attend.

At a recent Washington Iowa city council meeting proposals for a bicycle regulation ordinance were presented by President George Mohr of the Washington County Safety Council and former president Harland Mead. The outline includes registration and license tags, transfer reporting, tag replacement costs, lighting and reflector requirements, a horn or bell mandate, sidewalk riding rules, pedestrian right of way, park restrictions, and prohibitions on tethering to fire trucks or being towed.
The Bicycle Safety Club with nearly 50 members in Washington publishes its pledge. Members promise to obey traffic signals, ride straight, avoid passengers and tricks, not hitch rides, use lights, stay right, ride single file, avoid carrying parcels, choose safe routes, and keep bicycles in good condition.
In London on October 4 the House of Commons resumed the Munich four power debate. Laborite Herbert Morrison charged Hitler feared Chamberlain out of his wits and called Chamberlain’s policy submission to blackmail likely to lead to war. He argued Britain’s ten million pound loan to Czechoslovakia proves Britain’s shame.
In Carlsbad Hitler spoke to cheering crowds and pledged immediate reconstruction of the Sudetenland transforming the region into a rich Reich area. He planned to visit Marienbad to inspect fortifications along the Czech maginot line now under German control.
Chairman Wayne Norman said corn sealers are ready to reseal the 1937 crop for loans at 57 cents a bushel. Howard Stewart Howard Witting and Oral Norman lead the crew. first cribs sealed today with a $2 fee and sealing due by November 1.
Hilton Rabenold of Washington and former Ainsworth resident says the case Rabenold v Morrison, dismissed yesterday, will be refiled for the November district court term. Service was made on attorney E D Morrison. Plaintiff Lee J Farnsworth of Iowa City and E F Collins of Cedar Rapids represent the plaintiff who seeks damages over an alleged failure to carry an appeal to the supreme court.
