Shenandoah held its eighteenth annual parade with 1596 Sunday school pupils marching or riding, supported by three hands and a drum corps. The rally day event crowded all churches for services, with J. Earl King in charge of the parade.
Black Hawk County coroner Dr Eugene Smith ruled Mrs. Caroline Freet death due to acute uremia caused by chronic alcoholism. She collapsed in a local tavern while her daughter began taking her home, the investigation noting the final condition and circumstances.
Evelyn Mitchell a University of Iowa student from Emmetsburg reported her new car stolen from in front of the Pi Beta Phi sorority house after dinner. Police found the vehicle on North Johnson Street about 11 30 that night.
Dr. Frank Herron Smith of Berkeley, California told the Northwest Iowa Methodist conference that Iowa’s moral decay rests with its women. He cited three women fixated on cigars, cards, and cocktails in a talk titled Making America Christian.
Waterloo police report 24 year old Waterloo resident Casebeer Heights native Waterloo man named Erpelding suffered a serious injury with possible skull fracture when his motorcycle caught in streetcar tracks and was thrown against a curb. He was taken to a local hospital in serious condition.
Milo Harper 22 fell 35 feet from a tree while pursuing a squirrel. He fractured an ankle and suffered bruises after firing a gun at the squirrel, which then crawled back to its nest. He says he would not climb another tree, even for a hundred dollars.
Davenport police hunted a strip bandit who forced a man to strip after stealing his watch and wallet. Max Swan, 32, of Galva Illinois, was found with only shoes and socks after allegedly being forced to walk to railroad tracks near the government bridge from Rock Island.
Washington's North Side cafe proprietor John Winga was inducted as a full member of the Me Cantile Association, a daily informal club meeting at his restaurant. Twenty two attendees, led by Rich McCleery, witnessed the initiation after coffee and wafers.
The trial of Histor Rabenold of Ainsworth against Attorney EF Morrison was halted and dismissed by the plaintiff after the clerk’s office opened. Attorneys Lee Farnsworth and E K Collins signed the dismissal. At 2 PM, jury selection began in the state case against James Gardner charged with assault with intent to do great bodily harm near Wellman. County Attorney Richard Stewart and defense attorney L J Kehoe represented the sides.
Chief Jay Brown of the police department spoke at a neighborhood bicycle safety club meeting held at the Y Saturday afternoon. He praised the club for promoting rider safety and signaling practices to aid drivers, noting no bicycle crashes in town recently while nearby towns report several incidents.
Preparations under cooperative weather advance for the first annual Dutch Creek corn show at the fair grounds October 5 and 6. An estimated 25000 ears will be displayed. a chicken supper, play Aaron Slik from Punkin Crick, and speeches by Governor Kraschel and others are planned alongside races and music.
Reported overnight a deadly assault on the Jewish quarter of Tiberias left 21 Jews dead. Authorities said eight or more Arabs also died in weekend battles.

Davis announced that the Red Cross provided emergency relief to 63 000 people in the hurricane flood zone stretching across New England and Long Island with over 600 dead or missing. The relief effort covers about 15 000 homeless families and appeals for a 500 000 dollar fund. Five area headquarters were set up including Hartford Brooklyn Springfield and more. Volunteers and 150 disaster workers mobilized to aid victims and rehabilitate homes, businesses, furnishings and clothing while temporary fishing boats and gear were provided to port fleets to maintain work until permanent aid arrives.
Stanley Mangold twenty four from the Dublin area was jailed after an incident on a busy highway curve. He was arraigned before the justice of the peace following a Saturday night infrae event. The story warns that attempting another pass with a sheriff nearby could lead to further trouble.
Roger Babson in Europe says the war crisis passing removes barriers and signals a new business upturn. He notes U S activity about 10 percent above June lows and expects activity to return to year ago levels by Christmas with improving English and continental markets boosting American prospects.
Charles Martin and passenger Car Roll Yoder were hurt in an early Sunday crash on a rock road in the county north area. The Iowa State Teachers association proposes removing the state superintendent from politics and making the post appointive by a state board of education. It also urges pension legislation and state aid for schools, arguing Iowa lags in education funding and freedom to teach. An audience of thousands of Sudetens applauded Hitler after he led Germans across the border into the Sudeten area. He declared the Sudeten land would never again be torn from the German reich as the crowd cheered throughout his brief address.
Firefighters were summoned Saturday to the Atkins residence at 102 West Second Street where a small fire caused slight damage but was quickly controlled. A misdial sent responders to 402 East Second Street first, delaying arrival briefly while the error was corrected.
Detroit Tigers pitcher Bob Feller, famed for setting a strikeout record, was stopped by Iowa City police for speeding while driving toward his home in Van Meter Iowa. He was released with a warning. Catcher Rollie Hemsley of Cleveland accompanied him.
Paul Thornton a 29 year old hotel employee was found in a closed cay with a hose leading from the exhaust pipe and today was declared to have died by his own action in what authorities term a suicide case.
