Dr. Harry P. Lee of the University of Iowa College of Medicine resigns after 14 years on the faculty. He had served as an associate in the urology department and will enter private practice in Spokane, Washington.
Nine years after Erma Anderson of Marshalltown lost a valuable violin at a high school basketball game a theft suspect, the instrument was discovered in a cubbyhole in the ceiling. The find closes a long local mystery as authorities review the odd restoration.
Cedar Falls police hunt two brothers Jimmy Haynes eight and Laverne Haynes ten missing with a man believed headed to Sioux Falls South Dakota where their father is said to be. The younger boy was barefoot as authorities widen the search.
The annual trek to view autumn colors along the Mississippi river bluffs begins in McGregor with hundreds expected over the weekend. By Sunday the hills are predicted to reach peak coloring and a full week of vivid scenery should follow.
Dan Sanders of Buffalo New York spent a night in the Cedar Rapids jail and was given a bed at the police station. He later found work as a CIO picket outside the Roosevelt hotel where CIO officials claim the hotel is unfair to labor. Sanders will be paid one dollar for six hours of work. AFL officials posted signs at hotel entrances declaring the establishment unfair to organized labor.
Thieves in Fremont Linby Pekin and Hedrick raided two school houses and five or more business establishments taking about 60 dollars in cash a motor vehicle a revolver and valuables in the incidents.
Mrs. William C. Evans widow of former No Wa Chief Justice W. D. Evans died at her Hampton home after a long illness. She was 82 born in Woodstock Illinois in 1855 and moved to Hampton in 1879 after marriage.
Newton reports a Wagner Act violation charge against Midwest Metal Samping Co. of Kellogg has been docketed and will be heard soon. Field examiner Herbert J. Vogt of Chicago says attempts at an amicable settlement have failed.
Eva Wheaton 63 mother of Allen Wheaton 21 leaves state prison at Fort Madison en route to Rapid City S D. Allen Wheaton convicted of murdering Henry Plummer. Council Bluffs resident urged mercy before Governor Kraschel but Mrs Wheaton says she would not grant him another chance feeling he does not deserve it.
S Gordon Hanscom 24 of Berlin New Hampshire admitted stealing 4000 dollars from the Mount Pleasant hotel at Bretton Woods where he worked as night clerk. He was arrested with a local woman and found with 50 dollars in his possession after more than five weeks on the run.
Kalona resident Lillian Samantha Strickler 69 died yesterday at her brother Charles Strickler’s home after years of failing health. Funeral services will be held at the Strickler home at 1 39 Sunday afternoon with Rev. Clark in charge. Burial is in Sharon cemetery. She was born near Sharon September 18 1868 and married Daniel Troyer April 30 1889, having one child Violet Irene who preceded her. She leaves two sisters Mrs. Florence Miller Iowa City and Mrs. Minnie Grout Tingley and her brother Charles of Kalona.
The Muscatine Journal announced a $1 per year increase in paid in advance mail subscriptions effective October 18, impacting current subscribers and new enrollments. The move tightens the paper’s revenue to support distribution and operations.

Eldon Mock 26 of Davenport was arrested after town residents saw a car erratically driven on main street. He appeared intoxicated and a half pint of whiskey was found with him. Mock waived preliminary hearing and was bound over to the grand jury with $1,000 bond.

Bryan Coakley learned last night that his mother Mrs Hiram Coakley is in a Waterloo hospital with injuries after a horse at the Dairy Cattle Congress apparently ran loose and struck her. Doctors report a possible broken vertebrae among other injuries sustained Thursday.
In New York on October 2 4 two 14 year old boys Fal est and Hass confessed to police they were likely responsible for the sniper slaying of 17 year old Shirley Coop as she rode a street car. They said they had fired at trolleys cars buses trains and trucks after taking a stolen 22 calibre rifle from their eighth grade classes.
In Iowa the Coakley relatives visited Ryan to see Mrs Harold Ayers and Miss Myrtle Coakley went to Waterloo to visit her mother. Glenn Coakley and Bryan Coakley with Patty planned to depart for Waterloo as they await hospital updates on injuries.

Reactions split between calls for his resignation and defense framing his radio address as a masterpiece. The controversy quickly spurred appeals to President Roosevelt and possible congressional action ahead of his swearing in next Monday.
Associate Justice Hugo L. Black disclosed he once joined the Ku Klux Klan but resigned later. He rejected claims of racial or religious prejudice and stated he has no plan to resign from the Supreme Court. He said his address would be his last word on the Klan controversy.
