The wet September delivered 5.18 inches of rainfall in Washington County, exceeding the area’s long term average for the month. The official weather observer notes the month’s precipitation stands well above normal levels for the period.
In Dubuque Iowa the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service proposed placing wild ginseng roots on the endangered species list. The move would ban digging and exports, citing over-collection for foreign demand. A public comment period will determine the final decision. Iowa and about two dozen other states are involved with prices reaching up to 100 dollars per pound.
The Supreme Court let stand a state ruling that Tacoma Washington school board acted properly when it fired a social studies teacher James Gaylord for admitting he was homosexual. The brief order means no legal precedent and shows justices Brennan and Marshall wanted review.
Japanese Red Army terrorists aboard a Japan Airlines DC-8 released their hostages and agreed to leave the aircraft in Algiers where police surrounded the jet on arrival from Damascus. The six terrorists and five comrades freed from prison were reportedly taken to an undisclosed location by Algerian authorities.
A batch of municipal candidates reveals several Washington County cities will vote on November 8. In Ainsworth five council nominees join no mayoral candidate. Brighton lists a mayoral candidate and two council openings. Crawfordsville has a unopposed mayor and nine council hopefuls for five seats. Kalona fields four for four-year council posts. Riverside offers a mayoral challenger and seven for five council seats with Jean Kopf unopposed for treasurer. Wellman and West Chester show multiple candidates for council and two- or four-year terms.
A fourth contestant enters the Washington County Pork Queen contest set for Tuesday October 4 at 4 30 p m at the United Methodist Church She is Vicki Seitsinger daughter of Harold and Mrs Seitsinger Route 1 Wellman The event is sponsored by the Washington County Parkettes and the queen will be crowned at the Iowa Chop dinner Tuesday evening at the K C Hall Washington.
Iowa zones 9 10 and 13 see clear skies and not quite so cool tonight with low mid 40s. Tuesday turns cloudy with highs in the mid to upper 60s. Winds southeast around 5 mph tonight.
A speeding Amtrak Floridian slammed into a camper pickup at a crossing in Plant City, killing all ten aboard the vehicle, including seven children aged 1 to 10. The crash followed another Amtrak fatality nearby in Auburndale. Witnesses said crossing signals were active and the train blew its whistle. The train resumed its route about two hours later. Police found victims’ identities incomplete. some were migrant workers from Bushnell.
In Bridgeport Michigan a Chevrolet Vega Hatchback carrying six youths aged 11 to 17 plunged from a muddy roadside shoulder into the Cass River early Sunday. Charles W. Marcoux, 17, of Saginaw, was the sole survivor, escaping before the car sunk in eight feet of water.
Counsul General Kiyoshi Sumiya spoke to the World Trade Council of Iowa in Des Moines noting U S meat prices illustrate how American foods have won a place in Japan. He cited rising U S farm exports to Japan, its role as the top U S foreign market, and Japan's seven point economic program boosting imports and public works.
Former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was arrested under the Prevention of Corruption Act for allegedly abusing her position to secure jeeps for her campaign. Police, led by senior officials, served a magistrate warrant at her home. she was expected to be taken for bail. Witnesses described a tense scene as crowds gathered outside, with Gandhi calling for calm and claiming the move a political attempt to discredit her. Additional inquiries probe emergency abuses from 1975.
The Iowa Supreme Court refused to hear James Wendell Hall's appeal in the 1973 murder of 19-year-old nursing student Sarah Ann Ottens at the University of Iowa. Hall, a 19-year-old black athlete, was free on 100000 bail as the case stood. Ottens was slain in a fourth floor Rienow Hall dorm room on March 13, 1973.
Waterloo police say 17 year old Richie E Van Brocklin faces a manslaughter charge in the shooting of 14 year old Robin Burke. Burke died after being shot at Brocklin s home around 2 p m Sunday. Brocklin is in the city jail awaiting arraignment.
Band Boosters and National Bank of Washington launch a fundraiser inviting women and girls to dress donated dolls. Dolls will be displayed, auctioned in early December with proceeds to the uniform fund. Each outfit must be complete. 130 uniforms at $77 each.
