Local rainfall measured at .57 of an inch as showers moved through Friday night. Heavy bursts and later drizzle persisted for hours, followed by cooler temperatures and overcast skies into the morning.
Three candidates enter the Washington County Pork Queen contest at Washington United Methodist Church on Tuesday at 4 30 pm. Kaye Corpman Carol Tobin and Marcia Campbell are Highland and Washington seniors representing rural Ainsworth and rural Washington. The winner will be crowned at the Iowa Chop dinner at the K C Hall.
Evening Journal notes fiscal year 1977 real estate and personal property taxes are being collected. Property owners have until December 28 to pay the first half without penalty. The treasurer's office in the courthouse will close all day October 6 for a staff school of instruction.
Four Washington High School seniors are nominated as Homecoming Queen candidates. The election occurs next week by students, with the queen to be crowned before the homecoming game next Friday. Candidates are Jennie Harris Julie Palmer Barb Reneger and Lori Roth.
A 19-year-old South English man, Larry Dean Evans, died in a one car crash at 2:30 a.m. six miles south of Iowa City on Highway One. Evans, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dean Evans, worked at the Perfex Plant in Washington. Funeral services are pending at Powell Funeral Home in South English.
Robert M. Jones of rural Ainsworth was fined $100 Friday in Washington County District Court after he was convicted of driving while his license was under suspension. Ramon Ramirez of Washington pleaded innocent to a shoplifting charge over $20, waived speedy trial and a trial date has not been set.
The 1977 78 season kicks off Thursday October 6 at the Community Center with pianist Bradfor Gowen. Gowen, praised for power and audience connection, will perform Chopin Beethoven and contemporary American works. The concert begins at eight o clock and is open to Association members from Washington Mt Pleasant and Fairfield.
The Senate committee backed raising the retirement age to 70 with major exemptions for law enforcement and air traffic controllers. Tenured professors and teachers could face 65 retirement. a $20,000 pension threshold would allow further exemptions for some executives. Critics call these carve-outs age discrimination and urge opposition on the Senate floor.
Bangladesh airport hosts a tense standoff as Japanese Red Army terrorists aboard a Japan Airlines plane order the aircraft to taxi toward a relief plane from Tokyo. They demand $6 million and 14 crew free, threaten to shoot American businessman John Gabriel, with a 6 p.m. deadline and police surrounding the jets.
A Washington County Mini-Bus sponsored outing to Silver Dollar City Missouri runs October 7 to 9. The trip includes a Branson overnight with Foggy River Boys concert, a full day at the Silver Dollar City National Crafts Festival, and the Sammy Lane Pirate Cruise on Lake Taneycomo before returning to Washington by 10 to 11 p.m. Contact the Mini-Bus office in Blair House for reservations.
Police stormed Air Inter Flight 429 near Paris after a nine hour siege by Jacques Robert 43 who used a hand grenade wounding several and killing one. stewardess Annick Guillemot 30 was wounded while trying to stop entry to the cockpit. The hijacker demanded radio time and fuel before takeoff to an undisclosed destination.
