Delta Gammas won the scholarship trophy at the State University of Iowa campus in a contest among 13 sororities. The winners were announced at the annual candlelight dinner with Kappa Alpha Theta and Delta Delta Delta finishing second and third.
Miss Mary Sleeth Rushville Indiana farm manager for Wendell Willkie will speak in Iowa next week. She is scheduled at Burt Thursday at 2 30 p m and at Aston Friday at 2 30 p m according to Republican state headquarters.
Two coeds and 18 men began initial flights at Grinnell college under the civil aeronautics pilot training program. Instructors Glen Niederhauser and Wayne Estes hail from Marshalltown with Prof Grant O Gale leading the ground course. Cassie Empfield of Wilmette Illinois and Lois Stewart of Sheldon were the two women in the group.
Grinnell college officials mailed 2 500 invitations for the inauguration of Dr S N Stevens as president. Invitations go to officials of 225 colleges and universities, civic leaders, state and federal officials, clergymen, and public school leaders for ceremonies on Oct 24 25.
Iowa State Bar Association opens statewide office in Des Moines with Paul DeWitt as first paid secretary. The office serves as a central hub for association activities, handles public inquiries and complaints, runs an employment agency for law students and graduates, and provides speakers to civic groups.
A sunny fall day drew huge crowds to Washington for the Festicorn final day. Patrons flocked to the east square tents to view county corn displays while concessions reported record sales and the celebration neared its climactic finish with circus style entertainments downtown and at Chau tauqua Park.

Des Moines postmaster Steve Hill died today at 64 from a heart ailment after hospital treatment. He served as postmaster for six years and was hospitalized two weeks ago.
More than 700 children joined the Festiorn parade in Washington with Lincoln Stewart St James and rural county schools represented. The event featured the Washington High School Band leading ponies banners and imaginative groups while spectators lined the square. Participants carried corn banners pets and props echoing Iowa and Illinois corn themes.
President Roosevelt plans a radio address from Dayton Ohio October 12 at eight p m central time to report on American rearmament for the United States and the western hemisphere. The speech will be broadcast to all 21 American republics and is described as non political by White House secretary Stephen T Early.
Carl Hesseltine 55 of Wellman died at Washington county hospital after a collision between his car and a truck driven by Kenneth Sehmacker southwest of Wellman. He suffered a brain concussion and head injuries, was conscious briefly before death, with funeral set at Jones Funeral Home chapel at two o'clock tomorrow. interment Sandy Hook Cemetery near Brighton. Hesseltine was born Sept 14 1885 in Jule County Kansas, lived on farms near Washington and Wellman, married Edith Marek in 1928, survived by wife two brothers Edward and Horace a sister Mrs Mary Wiles and infant son James Richard who died in 1933. Parents are deceased.
A county headquarters meeting in the Colenso building will be addressed by Mrs. Judson H. Collier of Munford Texas. The event opens at 2 30 p.m. and invites all residents to attend. Mrs. Collier, a farm operator and Texas Agricultural Association member, is known for practical farming views and fluency in farm economics and trade policy.
M. C. Tilden of Kalona arrived yesterday to spend today with her daughter Norma and Lucille Reed while attending Festi corn events.
