Cherokee report says Dale Pitts aged 39 died after a stick he threw in a rebounded motion pierced his abdomen. He died from injuries at home. wife and three children survive.
Mrs Clyde Williams 32 died at a Creston hospital after being beaten by her husband Clyde Williams 38 who then poured gasoline on himself and set a fire dying instantly, according to Sheriff Earl Gibson.
A workman on the Iowa state fair grounds chopped through a very tough root, temporarily severing telephone communication for KGHO radio during the dig. The disruption lasted about two hours before service was restored.

Expenses exceeded receipts from concessions and other sources leaving the event financially short. a follow up meeting at the YMCA will wind up the affair and consider disposing of the map.
The men’s brotherhood of the Presbyterian church resumes regular meetings next Monday after a summer break. Dr. Eric Clithero of Parsons College will speak on "Preventive Religion." Vernon Witting serves as president of the group.
Wendell Willkie told a Harrisburg crowd of about 25,000 that he would put 9,500,000 unemployed back to work by ending class warfare and boosting free enterprise aboard the Willkie train en route to Philadelphia on October 4.

Richard Long of Washington is held on a charge of stealing an automobile. The charge was later changed to operating a vehicle without the owner's consent. Sheriff H. M. Putnam said the car was taken from Wisie Longs garage and wrecked four miles from Iowa City. Long was to be arraigned in district court before Judge P. J. Siegers.
George T. Baker of Davenport resigned today as president of the state board of education and said he would retain his board membership. The move comes amid ongoing state educational policy discussions in Davenport.

Curt Roe of Harper won the Festicorn horseshoe pitching match yesterday defeating Fred Humphreys of Wyman who took second place with Walter Meredith of Columbus Junction third. Noe and John Lee delivered sensational pitching in an exhibition while Mr and Mrs Guy Zimmerman of the City promoted the event amid strong spectator turnout.
Two pyramid decorations at the square corners damaged last night during Festicorn. Police investigate with possible action. The Chamber of Commerce had built them for permanent use and the loss is substantial. Authorities warn such destruction will not be tolerated and vow to pursue perpetrators.
Wilhelm Muhlenbrot a 40 year old German barber was sentenced to life imprisonment after pleading guilty to kidnapping 5 year old Marek Tristan Jr. for a $100000 ransom. Judge Maxwell McNutt imposed the mandatory life sentence under California law.
A longtime board member resigns citing ill health. He joined the board at its founding in 1909 and served as president since July 1926, stepping down from his leadership role and continuing his association with the organization.
