Alfred Peart aged 29 from Coalville died at a Certainteed Products Corp mine after a fall from an elevator used to raise him to the surface. His head was crushed between the cage and shaft side in the fatal accident.
Rev. R. A. Hufstead resigns after eight years at Reinbeck Congregational to become pastor of Nashua Congregational. He follows Rev. F. Jo Hanscom, who left to lead Little Brown Church.
Dean E. M. Mac Ewen announced the University of Iowa medical college has the largest enroll ment since 1935 with 886 students. The freshman class numbers 88 and the total enrollment is up 5 percent from last year, as 1935 enrollment stood at 398.
Walter D Will 27 Frank C Will 24 and Warren W Will 20 sons of Mr and Mrs Dan F Will Eagle Grove signed original enlistment papers at the army recruiting sub station in Fort Dodge. They were accompanied by their father who said he wants his boys in the army during this time of crisis and is keeping the youngest son on the farm to help with work.
A Spirit Lake region delegation urged the state conservation commission to seine the lake to remove buffalo and sheepshead among other fish. Ten residents from Spirit Lake and nearby Hatherville appeared to oppose seining arguing it would hurt nests and vegetation while others countered it harms desirable fish life.
A replica of Iowa's first schoolhouse will be dedicated Friday three miles south of Montrose on the original site. George Wilson and Jessie M. Parker state superintendent of education will participate. The replica was built by the national youth administration and the Lee County Schoolmasters club organized the event. Thomas W. Kerfoot, principal of the Fort Madison schools, will be in charge.
Three salesmen identified as J. C. Smith, 38, Iowa Faille. LF. H. Graves, 43, Des Moines. and R. C. Bistip, 37, Magon City, were jailed on resisting an officer charges following a fight at the Dairy Cattle Congress grounds. Special Deputy Howard Yocum said one man slashed his vest, trousers, and shirt and cut him near the eye with a knife.
Rudolph J. Allen, 81, is in fair condition at Park Hospital after killing his 82 year old divorced wife and attempting suicide. He will face murder charges if he recovers. Police officials quote Allen claiming the act was his “best way out.” The couple, divorced 25 years, were living with their daughter Mrs. H P Gardner in Cerro Gordo County.
Secretary of State Karl G. Miller scheduled a hearing for October 9 to challenge the legality of Communist party nominations in Iowa. Mrs. Imogen H. Emery of Cedar Rapids filed the protest, arguing the convention did not represent a political party or organization as defined by state law.
British and German air forces exchange heavy blows across Europe with strikes on London Manchester Liverpool and targets from the French coast to the Ruhr. London reports six air raid alarms and nine German planes downed as Berlin and German targets suffer major damage to munitions factories oil supplies and electrical stations as Axis moves toward Africa continues.
Washington DC October 24 The commerce department predicted the total income of Americans would approach the 78 billion record set in 1930 and exceed the total for any intermediate year.
Carl Hesseltine of Wellman is in serious condition at Washington County Hospital after a collision between a car carrying him and his wife Edith Hesseltine and a limestone truck driven by Kenneth Schmucker. Schmucker and Edith’s husband, Carl, were injured. Schmucker was pinned in the wreckage.
Thousands visit the corn show attract by unusual ears and freak corn exhibits. Ed Dyas Ames judge has a big task awarding over 500 in prizes as judging nears completion. County Agent J W Chandler says full award list will be published tomorrow. Don Radda displays unique nearly two foot long color corn among many entries.
The Rose show drew about 700 spectators for the first day of judging colts and yearlings with bigger crowds expected for Washington county draft horses. A nominal admission of 25 cents for adults and 10 cents for children will be charged Thursday afternoon at the cavalry field as more saddle horses from Cedar Rapids Ottumwa Iowa City and Oskaloosa display their fine lines. Awards announced include firsts for suckling males and colts and yearling horses with Nayrd Scott and others judging. A marriage license was issued to John S S Blum and Cleola B Shaila in Kalona.
The festival closes with the America on Parade pageant featuring 350 Washington residents in costume. Festicorn events wrap up Thursday night at Chautauqua park with corn map viewing, concessions, and free acts downtown. Governor Wilson attends. parade repeats Thursday morning. horseshoe finals draw crowds today and tomorrow.
Festicorn Frolics at New Armory field offers a grand finale with Guy Zimmerman and his wife performing a full horseshoe exhibition, headline tumbling acrobats, and a unique Ghost Horse act. Amateur displays from Kalona and Washington schools, plus bands and a jug band, cap the Festicorn awards with balloon race and horseshoe tourney prizes.
A special fifteen minute exhibition by world champion horseshoe pitcher Guy Zimmerman will precede the patriotic pageant America on Parade at 7:30 p.m. at New Cavalry field. No extra charge. regular pageant tickets cover both acts tonight only. Zimmerman's stunts are described as thrilling and stageworthy across the country.
