In Fort Madison Iowa Allen Sanchez 18 died when his motorcycle struck a parked pickup truck. His passenger Dale Brockman 18 was taken to University Hospitals in Iowa City in serious condition.
Conservation officer Robert Moats identified unknown shooters as the criminals behind the killing of 50 pelicans on a farm lake near Armstrong Iowa. The birds were found on the Sturm farm and Sturm reported hearing a volley of gunfire in the early hours Wednesday. Moats called the acts a disgusting situation and said investigators would press on.
Two inmates cut bars with a hacksaw blade in a second floor cell at the 83 year old Iowa County Jail in Marengo and escaped on foot. Identified are Michael A. Gasper from Wisconsin and Jerome George from North English. Gasper faces larceny of a motor vehicle charges and George a burglary parole revocation hearing. Another item reports Chuck McCracken of San Bernardino California died after removing himself from a kidney dialysis machine six weeks earlier. He was 37 and had endured 24 years of illness.
Patricia Hearst identified as the woman who rented the garage concealing a getaway car in a Sacramento bank robbery where a woman was killed. Federal agents say her only known active role was renting the garage, linked by a bait bill found in her San Francisco apartment. A prosecutor says further charges are likely. the state attorney general suggests possible immunity if she testifies against SLA allies.
President Ford greeted Emperor Hirohito with full ceremonial honors marking the first state visit by a Japanese ruler in U S history. A 21 gun salute welcomed the 74 year old emperor and Empress Nagako as flags flew and a throng of officials watched. Hirohito said relations have moved beyond World War II while Ford emphasized historic ties and goodwill.
Agriculture Secretary Earl Butz told farm belt leaders at the White House Conference that the Oct. 15 deadline to lift the grain embargo would be met and that negotiators were nearing a Soviet sale agreement. Ford indicated the Russian deal was in the works as Well.
The Labor Department reports September wholesale prices up 0.6 percent led by food, fuels, and metals. Food costs jumped 4.3 percent while fuels, metals, and other industrial materials rose 0.7 percent overall. Prices for oil and gas and utilities climbed, signaling continued inflationary pressure into next months.
Mid-Prairie High School launches 1975 Homecoming with a 7 p.m. pep rally in Wellman gym followed by an 8 p.m. bonfire and tug of war. Friday features a pancake supper at the American Legion Building from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. tickets cost $2 adults and $1.50 for children 12 and under. The Hawks play Mt. Vernon at 7:30 p.m. with king and queen named at halftime. An alumni dance at the Student Center runs 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. with Fourth Estate providing music. admission $1.50 singles and $2.25 couples.

UPI reports two teenagers linked to a $54,000 extortion kidnaping of a GM executive and family were captured. Kenneth J D Royce 18 of Ann Arbor Mich was arrested in Edgerton by Police Chief Jerry Thornsley after seeking lodging. John Szynwelski 20 also of Ann Arbor was seized by the FBI as he alighted a Cleveland bus.
Secretary of State Kissinger told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee that all secret aid promises to Israel and Egypt related to the Mideast accord have been provided. He faced line by line scrutiny as Congress and Ford clash over public disclosure and Sinai monitors approval.
