Services will be this afternoon at Shell Rock for Barbara Grant 29 month old daughter of Mr and Mrs LeRoy Grant Shell Rock who died Saturday afternoon when she fell from the car in which she was riding with her parents near Cedar Falls Ia A brother and a sister also survive.
John Potter of Maquoketa Iowa pleaded guilty to motor vehicle theft and received a sentence of up to ten years in Fort Madison penitentiary. Judge George Claussen imposed the term. Potter had escaped from the county jail on September 23 along with Mariat Powell and George Hazlett who remain at large.
Des Moines reports the federal government withdrew 1 751 acres of Camp Dodge area from sale as surplus property. Brig Gen Charles H Grahl notes the land north of 750 acres of state land is needed for training the state and national guard. The area had been declared surplus Sept 20 and turned to the Department of Agriculture for disposal.
Des Moines officials seek 70 workers for three state hospitals for the insane as conscientious objectors demobilize. Mott Pleas has about three objectors, Cherokee five, Independence fifteen, with some wives also employed. Governor Blue met with the state board of control to address staffing across state institutions.
Chicago October 2 VP Jean A Brunner national commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars says labor industry and government must prevent a reconversion crisis that could pit workers against managers in a drag out fight. He warns veterans risk being drawn into such conflicts and urged fulfilling standards of living not reliance on WPA style makework.
Karl Libe announces Washington county Iowa earned a national War Salvage Citation for three and a half years of service. Herbert C. Plagman notes salvage division closure Sept 30 while urging continued waste paper collection by churches schools and groups. Libe commends residents for meeting quotas and thanks volunteers for dedication and patriotism.

Preliminary work toward organizing a Legion drum corps in Washington began at a meeting last night. Jess Radda leads the buglers, Earl Galloway the drummers, and Don Radda the fifers as they recruit members for a revived unit. Rehearsals set for Mondays with hopes to perform on Armistice Day.
The body of Robert T. Bellaire, first Allied correspondent killed in the Pacific after Japan surrendered, was buried today in Yokohama. The ceremony reflected the war’s end and honored his reporting service.
General MacArthur demanded a complete inventory of Japan war production since 1941 and the annual output of weapons ammunition vehicles and equipment through August 1945. He ordered confiscation of the September issue of Tokyo Keizai Shimpo for an article deemed inimical to occupation forces.
At the city council meeting last night firemen asked to use an upstairs room at city hall previously used by the Legion. They also urged decorating the fire station. The council took no definite action amid routine reports and bill approvals.
Bellaire an eighty year old correspondent for Colliers magazine and former Tokyo bureau man for United Press was fatally injured in a jeep accident Saturday night near Tokyo bay on the green turf field overlook.
Lt. Gen. Jimmy Doolittle told the Veterans of Foreign Wars convention in Chicago that Japan was defeated before the atomic bomb, attributing the peace to terrible pre invasion air strikes. Gen. Omar Bradley added goals to place veterans facilities near homes and address hospital needs peaking around 1975.
The imperial government was ordered to collect 15900 copies while 6000 remain in circulation. The magazine must submit all future material to American censorship. MacArthur had earlier aligned Japanese newspapers with strict controls after charges of rape looting and assault by American troops were published.
Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Warnock will be held at 2:40 p.m. Wednesday at Sherman’s Funeral Home, with burial in Ainsworth Cemetery. She died yesterday at Rock Island Illinois after a short illness. Born March 2, 1878 in Ainsworth, she was the daughter of Woody F. and Harriet Dye Harding. She was married first to Allen Gaines and later to Elmer Warnock, who died about twenty years ago. A longtime Ainsworth resident, she lived with a niece, Mrs. Woody Dawson, for five years before moving to Rock Island. Surviving are a daughter Mrs. Floyd Kistler of Rock Island, one grandchild, one brother John Harding of Mexico Missouri, and one sister Mrs. Emma Caple of Muscatine.
Washington men Robert Lewis and Charles McKone plan a Thursday opening of the L and M cafe on East Washington Street near the Square. The former restaurant room in a Mrs. Ralph Dougherty building has been redecorated and re conditioned with upgraded fixtures. Lewis and McKone are veterans, with Lewis from Troop D, 113th Cavalry, and McKone recently discharged from the navy.
Members of the headquarters company of the Iowa State Guard held a steak dinner at the State cafe after weekly drill at the armory. The event honored Staff Sergeant Rodney Davis.
General George S. Patton is removed from command of the U S 3rd Army and Bavaria's governorship and reassigned to command the U S 15th Army. Lt Gen Lucian K Travis replaces him, amid reports of his earlier remarks defending Nazi officials to prevent hardship in Bavaria.
E. J. Blatter announced the sale of the People's Grocery at 801 South Iowa Avenue to Marion Swanson, manager of Benteco market in Washington. Swanson will take over on October 15. Blatter cites time demands of his office job at American Pearl Button company as the reason for selling, after owning the store three years.
The record notes that neither Ulysses Grant nor Robert E. Lee were full generals during the Civil War, Grant later promoted to full general and first in that rank, while Washington was never appointed a full general.
In Dueneburg a British military court hears Josef Kramer and 43 others accused of wholesale atrocities at Belsen. Kramer, denouncing the charges, sat with downcast eyes as his statement denying guilt was read into the record.
A company notes a member completing three years and not re-enlisting while Corporal Earl O Connor of Ainsworth reenlisted. Two new Ainsworth men joined the company this week bringing the roster to 49. Four guards from Eldora Boys Training School have returned home, with Captain George Baker and Le Edward Chabal remaining there as Lt. Rodney Kephart led the company last night.
