Gov. George A. Wilson issued a war speed limit proclamation urging drivers to observe 35 miles per hour in Iowa. State patrol chief Clint A Knee said officers will stop cars exceeding the limit and request slower speeds.
The Rev. Charles D. Mannhardt was named chaplain of Mercy hospital and the State University of Iowa hospitals in Iowa City on Thursday by Bishop Henry P. Rohlman. The bishop also appointed the Rev. Carl F. Clems as pastor of St. Marys church at Solon.
Mrs. M. E Baldwin of the Sioux City Humane Society reports seven dogs killed and 11 injured in a 24 hour period ending noon. She alleges drivers acted deliberately and calls for trials of the guilty parties.
Council Bluffs firefighters recovered Karl Stillwell, 29, from a smoke filled bedroom after he apparently fell asleep while smoking. An hour of breathing treatment with a respirator at Mercy Hospital left his condition listed as serious.
Dubuque reports its fourth traffic fatality of 1942 when 82 year old Mike Dempsey of St Francis Home for the Aged died after walking into a Main street automobile driven by Dr. G Brandt of Garnaville. The crash marks the 314th Iowa auto fatality for the year.
It is announced that men who took the pilot training mental screening tests within the past six weeks will not be permitted to take them again next Tuesday evening. Those who took the examinations more than six weeks ago and failed to pass will be eligible to take them again at the high school next Tuesday evening at 6 30 when another large group of young men will be examined.
Army planes conducted five strikes over two days against Japanese shipping and shore sites in the Aleutians. They damaged at least four ships and shot down at least six Zero fighters with one American plane lost. Operations targeted Kiska and Atu.
Navy communique reports U S submarines in far eastern waters sunk one large seaplane tender, one large cargo passenger ship, one large freighter, two medium cargo ships, and damaged two medium cargo ships and a large tanker. Total Japanese vessels sunk or damaged reaches 115 with 74 sunk and 92 damaged.
Court records show 37 licenses issued so far this year as of September.
At a highway intersection northwest of Riverside two cars carrying seven and five children respectively collided on the way to school. Mary Ruth aged 10 suffered a broken pelvis and was taken to University hospital Iowa City. Melvin Metz had a fractured shoulder and a broken rib. Others were bruised or shaken. State Patrolman John Rhynsberger filed the report.
Funeral services for Peter H. Krabill will be held Sunday afternoon in Wayland after the body was moved to Stacy funeral home. A 1:15 p.m. service at the funeral home precedes a 2 p.m. service at Eicher church conducted by Rev. Willard Leichty and Rev. Nunemaker. Burial is in the Eicher cemetery family lot.
President Roosevelt summoned General George C. Marshall for a briefing on global battle fronts and scheduled a luncheon with Secretary Stimpson. Admiral King and Undersecretary Forrestal reviewed the naval situation as Roosevelt resumes leadership at home after a coast to coast tour. He spoke with several people by phone and prepared for anti inflation legislation amid a late press conference.
A wartime feeding meeting at the courthouse saw 86 extension war co operatives and livestock producers hear J W Chandler presid e. Herb Howell urged efficient feed use noting one bushel of corn yields ten pounds of pork and stressed minimizing fat and tallow. E L Quaife discussed soybean meal protein rations and the need to husk hogs partially to save labor and equipment.

Washington October 2 The War Production Board ordered the stoppage of all whisky production effective October 8 The industry must shift its entire output The decision came as War Production Chief Donald M Nelson testified before the House agriculture committee that the nation should have enough food for the duration but may have to forego luxury foods
A town wide scrap metal drive is set for next Tuesday as Washington businesses close to aid a campaign in Franklin Jackson and Washington townships. Chairman Earle Libe says veterans and students will collect metal from stores and homes. grease and fats will be gathered downtown as well.
G E Mace reports a nation wide scrap metal drive needs more than 100 trucks with drivers for next Tuesday. Forty offers so far, many local businesses listed in the drive include Sitler's Auto Parts Hederick Motor Transport Humble Produce Washington Beverage Co Eelipse Lumber Co Peters Hardware and others with several firms contributing two vehicles each. Public officials and utilities also participate as communities mobilize for the collection effort.
A county meeting set a sendoff for 46 soldiers departing for active army service on October 12. Travel orders list a 9:58 am departure from Washington via Ottumwa to Camp Dodge, with Wellman and E C Jones named to organize the program.
Judge J. G. Patterson, after holding court in Washington, returned to his home in Oklahoma yesterday and plans to return to resume the September term of district court next Wednesday.
Paul V. Hill of the Iowa highway traffic advisory committee urges an end to joy riding by school youths for the war’s duration. He advises walking when possible to build health and conserve tires, and using bicycles buses or street cars when needed. Neighbors should share rides as required. Cars should be driven slowly and only for essential trips.

The debate centers on government crop loan provisions and farm price support after the war.
