A column notes that author Will Durant will address the Southwest Iowa Teachers' convention in Council Bluffs on October 11 during a two day meeting October 10 and 11. Durant will discuss the Crisis of American Civilization.
President Emeritus James Rowland Angell of Yale University will headline the dedicatory dinner for WSUI the University of Iowa broadcasting station. The speech is scheduled for October 18 in Iowa City.
Marcus farmer Dale Pitts, 39, is hospitalized at Sioux Valley with a pierced abdomen believed caused by a stick. He reportedly threw a stick while chasing hogs on his farm, then fell and impaled himself on it.
Waterloo assessments on electric and gas utilities were raised by roughly 540,146 on Iowa Public Service Co. property. County auditor Bailey Es. says the increase reflects updated valuations in Black Hawk County.
Newton investigators probe skeleton of a girl about 10 found along a country road two miles northwest of Lynnville. Coroner Ralph Toland of Jasper County notes stones in a nearby cemetery date to 1860.
Report from Clay County tests shorting corn stalks just above the ears at road intersections near Rossie to improve visibility at blind corners. Officials say the practice harms the crop little and aims to reduce crashes blamed on tall corn obstructing views.
One hundred World War I era tanks stored at Rock Island Arsenal since 1919 were reported by a reliable informant to be shipped to Canada. Col. F F Worthington of the Canadian army inspected the tanks last week and found them declared obsolete by the U S Army two years earlier.
Mrs. Jon A. Green aged 90 was severely burned when a cloth used to polish a kitchen range caught fire. She fled the farm home as flames enveloped her, and her husband, 77, working nearby, tore off the burning garments. She remained in critical condition with burns over most of her body.
Mrs. J. Borden Harriman the former envoy to Norway will address students and citizens in the Fort Dodge high school auditorium Thursday. She campaigns for President Roosevelt on a tour through Illinois Iowa Nebraska Minnesota Wisconsin and Michigan. The event is organized by the Webster county central Democratic committee led by Edward Breen of Fort Dodge.

In Mason City Iowa on October 11 an 84 year old wife Mrs Rudolph J Allen was killed by her 81 year old divorced husband who then attempted suicide by slashing his throat with a razor.
Wilhelm Muhlenbroch, 40, a German bartender, pleaded guilty in Redwood City California to kidnapping three year old Tristan. He faces sentencing Friday.
The air ministry says British bombers damaged the large west power station in Berlin during an extended raid. German raiders hit London districts with high explosives and oil bombs but four planes were downed. London officials estimate September bombings killed about 5,000 and wounded 8,000.
The three day Festicorn festival begins with a parade and band concerts drawing thousands. Vendors report crowded eating stands and a larger afternoon crowd anticipated for free acts. Tonight the program splits between downtown events and the pageant America on Parade at Chautauqua park.
Capt O J Brown says Col Maxwell O Brien reports troop D will receive four scout cars and accompanying machine guns shortly. Motor-cycles are also due as part of the new mechanized regiment. The colonel predicts a year of training from January 3 to January 19.
The Festicorn corn show fills two eastside tents with Washington county corn displays. North tent hosts about 500 ten ear samples from local farmers while the south tent features hybrid seed corn firms and their breeds. County Agent J W Chandler and Wayne Norman prepared the displays as judging by Bud Dyne of Ames begins later today.
The Washington county poultry exhibit at City Hall draws visitors during Festicorn. By morning, 155 fine chicken entries, Bantams to Plymouth Rocks, plus turkeys and rabbits, fill pens. Judge Ed Manilaw planned awards before noon, with rug and quilt displays in an adjoining room led by Mrs. Fred Wagner.
A brisk two week effort by the Festicorn parade committee produced a commendable spectacle this morning. Six horsemen led the procession with dignitaries Carl W. Klein and Frank B. Miller followed by the Municipal band and a variety of pageant entries. Floats from Iowa Southern Utilities, Powers Produce and 4 H club girls, plus auto displays including a Miss Washington car, energized the event with spirited music from the Concert Band and the Keota fife and drum corps.
A parade for children is set for tomorrow afternoon at four led by the High School marching band. It will start from in front of the Y M C A and circle the square. Any youngster may enter by reporting after school at the Y with no pre registration required.
Officials announce the court house will be closed all day Thursday due to the Festicorn festival. The closure affects court operations and public access for the day.
A meeting of women of the democratic party is set for Friday at 2 30 PM at the party headquarters in the Colenso hotel. All members and interested attendees are invited.
In Fhenandoah Iowa on October 1 a radio straw poll by KMA showed Wendell Willkie with 54.5 percent and Franklin D Roosevelt with 45.5 percent of the vote. Karl May said similar polls in 1932 and 1936 favored Roosevelt. Mr and Mrs Dallas Toppine and their son of Wellman were business callers here yesterday afternoon.
A local parade featured new cars from area dealers and farm machinery tractors at the end. Washington Fire Department brought two trucks. A Thursday repeat is planned at ten o clock with possible further entries in June. The morning opened with a Municipal Band concert and fife and drum corps. Afternoon events included free acts on the square and judging for corn poultry and horse shows.
Rumors swirl after a Journal notice on a business men horseshoe pitching meet. Odds tilt to Tommy Duncan and Frank Parrish amid claims of victories over Terrible Tommy. Charley George and George Pauls vow a decisive match while Tom Brookhart remains in contention.
Sheriff H. M. Putnam reports Clarence Farrier age 25 of Brighton is held on forgery charges. Arrested near Brighton, he waived prelim hearing before Justice J. E. Bovee and is bound over to the grand jury on a $5900 bond. Authorities allege he cashed a $14 check June prior on Floyd Dunbar’s account with forged signature. Farrier had been in Kansas and returned recently.
Hoys and Phil Antonoff and Pres ton Wolf remain in contention as the race continues. They have not been eliminated yet, sustaining hope for advancement.
A large crowd gathered at the southwest square corner to view an 18 by 25 foot corn map of Iowa built from about a million and a half grains. The map, raised six feet above the pavement, required 4,000 to 5,000 hours of work by 400 to 500 people across counties. Lieutenant Governor B. B. Hickenlooper spoke after chairman Dunham Morrison opened the ceremonies.
A preview of the Festicorn pageant America on Parade crowned Violet Flynn queen at the new armory field. Mrs. Martin and Lt. Gov. Hickenlooper attended. Eight princesses were introduced and honored with a diamond ring and roses. Episodes traced American history from Columbus to America Today with notable ballet numbers and colorful dances.
Lieutenant Governor B B Hickenlooper praised a county corn map unveiled at Festicorn saying it should be preserved for posterity by the State Historical Society or a similar agency. He urged exhibition at the World’s Fair and called it a state symbol and work of art.
