Ames notes Stephen Vincent Benet, Pulitzer Prize winning author of John Brown's Body, will visit Iowa State College as guest speaker for a literature and life series from October 18 to 22.
Frank Lyons a 40 year old farmer living 1.5 miles north of Morning Sun shot himself in his barn. He is survived by his wife and four children.
Seventy five firemen from central Iowa towns attended a district firemen's school in Marshalltown. Newest methods in firefighting were demonstrated during the session, which was one of six planned state meetings this year.
Steam for a Manchester laundry is supplied from the boiler of a locomotive on the Manchester Short Line via a pipe arrangement. The laundry’s regular boiler was under repair when the idea arose to use the locomotive steam.
Blair Dewey and Kenneth Moore of Drake University Law School found no space in their crowded fraternity house. They shopped and now store their clothes in the white satin interior of a walnut coffin, creating a unique closet solution on campus.
Iowa City officials announced dates for the annual state play production contest at the University of Iowa. Class A and B community groups will compete March 17 18 19 with about 25 casts of one act plays. Music teachers meet February 10 11 12 while historians graphic and plastic arts teachers gather April 8 9.
Max Hardie aged 28 of Audubon died from injuries when the car rolled backward while he lay under it tightening brakes at his farm home. He was found by a child and extricated by his wife.
Iowa City reports enrollment at the dental college fell slightly for 1927-38 due to stricter entrance requirements. Only 146 students enrolled. the program now requires an average grade of C on two years of liberal arts study.
Cedar Rapids state Senator Frank C. Byers learned he had served as Iowa governor for two days while Governor Kraschel fished and Lieutenant Governor Valentine was away. Byers held the position by virtue of his presiding role in the state Senate and did not realize it at the time.
Equipment packed and camp personnel assigned to other posts await final orders to evacuate and disband Maquoketa CCC camp. Erosion control work has been done on 122 farms since July 1934.
Hotle in town yesterday reported twenty acres of corn harvested in one day with mechanical pickers yielded about 80 bushels per acre. The crop was dried and placed on the market immediately and represents a small portion of Hotle’s large corn acreage.
Everett L Stewart and Joe Knotek of Jackson township were elected president and vice president respectively of the Washington county Livestock Marketing Committee at the initial meeting in the Farm Bureau office. County Agent Wm J Roudabush was chosen secretary and treasurer. The group met at North Side Cafe for a steak dinner before discussing marketing problems led by H C Aaberg and Prof W Arthur. The committee includes Peter Schneider Marion Stransky Carl Oldfield Ed Hotle Everett L Stewart Joe Knotek Joe Carris O W Schmitter Hal Huston Sam Turkington Dave McLaughlin among others.
Judge P. J. Siegers returned to his Newton home after several days of court on miscellaneous business. He plans to return to Washington on Thursday October 7 to resume unfinished business from the September term and has set assignments for cases upon his return including State of Iowa ex rel H M Putnam v Lynn Butterbaugh and other matters.
County health board members met in the Washington county health unit offices for a business session. Dr EB L Walsh reported on recent work and his report was entirely satisfactory.
This year the Washington blackbirds abandon their usual tree roosts in residential areas and take over Central Park trees. Their daytime and morning chatter fills the park as millions roost above, leaving obvious messes on walks and grounds beneath.
About fifty American Sunday School Union missionaries from five midwestern states will travel to Washington for a five day conference starting Saturday. Dr. Elliott Parkhill Dr. Jesse Hastings and Dr. Harry Udd headline the program with talks on Christianity and missionary experiences.
A checkup shows 155 University of Iowa class of 1937 graduates have accepted teaching positions. Iowa high schools employ 120 of them with the remainder spread across 12 other states.
The work of Miss Stella Jorpeland county health nurse was especially commended for her dedicated service to the community.
In London on October 1, authorities reported the arrest of Hussein Khalidi Jerusalem mayor and Arab higher council member, and Fudad Sava secretary of the commission after an Arab ultimatum over 200 detainees in the Nazareth murder case of British district commissioner Louis Andrews was rejected.
The Washington County Post 2808 and the Journal publish a monthly patriotic calendar for October. The aim is to educate teachers and students with daily historical achievements as part of an Americanization program by the Veterans of Foreign Wars. The calendar will appear in the Journal today and can be saved to form a year end booklet.
J E DeWit announces the opening of a new ice cream and dairy shop in Washington, located three doors from the National Bank. Hutchinsons products will be sold with plans for a forthcoming delicatessen. Mrs DeWit and daughter Helen Mae will assist. DeWit returns to greet old friends and customers.
Ainsworth Oct 1 a large cattle barn at H J Keene farm west of town burned last night discovered at 10 30 Dan neighbors rushed to help and Farmers Mutual truck from Washington responded hay of about thirty tons mainly alfalfa and soy bean hay was lost no livestock were believed in the barn and some nearby sheep were saved the property is owned by a land company with the loss covered by insurance
The county treasurer reported September tax receipts totaling 236 250 84 with 64 700 93 in homestead refund checks issued. Daily receipts fell to 22 425 57 and 31 961 32 the prior day, reflecting a slump after the busy period. Some refunds stem from taxpayers who paid late or did not file appeals, and others from those who paid 1937 taxes earlier. Refunds will be issued to delinquent taxpayers when they pay their taxes.
Tokyo declares that Japanese planes will persist in bombing Nanking despite protests from the United States and other nations. In a formal reply to Cordell Hull’s note, Japan calls aerial attacks on open Chinese towns unavoidable and defends civilian casualties as not violating humanity.
Chicago October 1. A. F. Whitney president of the railway men’s union says wage negotiations with five operating brotherhoods remain deadlocked. He accuses roads of laying off 100,000 workers since August first, with Pennsylvania, New York Central and Baltimore & Ohio among those cutting about 20,000 jobs. A carrier spokesman says a compromise has been offered but nothing effective.
Washington county swine sold well at the Chicago Stock Yards with 71 head of 215 pound hogs bringing 12.15 per cwt. George Crawford of near Keota noted he had earned 96 cents more per cwt than earlier bids. September cattle trade set a September record, peaking at 19.90 per cwt, the highest since January 1919 when steers brought 20.00.
In the Hague area October reporting, a Dutch destroyer opened fire on a Japanese fishing boat in the Dutch East Indies after the boat ignored orders to halt. Two Japanese sailors were killed and two wounded before the destroyer captured the vessel.
Marion Johnson a Drake University student held an auction in her dorm room to raise money for the trip to South Bend to see the Drake football team play Notre Dame. She announced the sale would fund travel to the game and sold jewelry and clothing to supporters.
An Imperial Airways flying boat crash near Athens claimed multiple lives including Roy Henderson an American whose body was recovered from the sea. The flight was en route from Alexandria to England when it went down.
In New Hampton Iowa state examiners T P Welch and J S McCord say a 2178 dollar shortage in the Hecht water and steam funds cannot be traced to any irregularity during the tenure of city clerk M H ONeil who died October 4 1936.
Centerville Iowa Oct 14. Paul McCarty 22 accused of murdering his wife after a drinking party Sept 5 will go on trial at the Appanoose county court in the November term. The state says he killed her after the party while he contends she fell from a truck and was run over.
