Des Moines reports August 1936 as the peak month for automobile accident deaths. Paul L. Meyer of the accident record division notes 66 Iowa highway fatalities in August, vs 62 in July 1935 and 61 in August 1935, highlighting a rising trend.
Mrs. Dora Hurd of Council Bluffs was elected treasurer of the American War others at the state convention. Mrs. Kate James of Council Bluffs retained her position as president and Mrs. John Eskew of Shenandoah remained vice president.
A Crosser trucker escaped unharmed when a train struck his truck at a grade crossing in Grand Island Nebraska. The impact split the truck in two and hurled the rear section about 60 feet.
Fairfield voters rejected two 20 year gas and electric franchise bids from Iowa Electric Co. by narrow margins. The gas franchise failed by 181 votes and the electric by 185 votes, with the current franchise term ending in February.
Roy Horton, manager of the Quaker Oats elevator, reports receiving the first new corn. It marks the earliest date on record for new corn.
University of Iowa drama group will stage 12 plays in the new theater building during the 1926 37 season. Opening on November 9, announced Prof. E C Mabie head of the speech and dramatic art department.

Clair Roberts forty of Davie City was killed in a high speed auto crash near Leon after a two year police manhunt for car thefts and harboring criminals. Four others escaped unharmed while his son in law Mrs Grace Shepard was hospitalized. Authorities tied Roberts to a 1934 Blythedale bank robbery attempt and a recent car theft case.
Des Moines reports Clair Roberts among recent fatalities from an accident near Leon, pushing Iowa’s road toll to 382 for the year.
New York Yankees defeat the New York Giants 18 to 4 to even the World Series in game two. The Yankees built a large early lead, scoring nine runs by the fourth inning as Schumacher was tagged for several runs while Gomez pitched for New York.
Four people died when an oil stove exploded at a residence in Omaha and the bodies were removed from the home.
George Conrad, long time manager of the Farmers implement store in Washington since June 1, 1934, is promoted to the John Deere store in Marshalltown where he previously worked in a responsible capacity. R. G. Shaver of Iowa City will move to Washington to manage the local store.
Democratic U S senate hopeful Gillette will address Washington County Democrats at Mount Pleasant tomorrow at 2 o clock. A considerable turnout is expected by local supporters.
In Fairfield on October 2 a 33-year-old man identified as Nesson suffered a fractured skull after being struck by a heavy chain hoist during road construction at Germainville. He is listed in critical condition.
Washington county Farm Bureau members unanimously re elect W J Roudabush as county agent for five more years. He has directed the bureau through turbulent times expanding 4 H clubs and member reach while reducing indebtedness to assets. Roudabush, a long time farmer and Ames Iowa State College graduate, has held community roles including church, Masons, Eastern Star and the American Legion.
Hundreds attended the Fall Opening event as five hundred balloons released across ten counties carried prize numbers. A Washington firm window listed 557 prizes with values at local stores and shops including M. Bridges & Co and Washington Fruit Market.
A fall opening in Washington drew several thousand attendees under a harvest moon as balloons, prizes, and a public pep meeting energized crowds. An Iowa peace officer and a truck driver were kidnapped and robbed by three gunmen. Officer Max Gray, night marshal of Clarinda, was wounded in the leg but will recover. The trio looted merchandise and abandoned the vehicle between Clarinda and Gillespie. a bread truck driver reported scattered packages.
The Literary Digest reports Landon leading with 438 601 votes to Roosevelt 252 524 and Lemke 29 083 from 756 807 ballots in 31 states. First returns show Landon ahead in Arizona Oregon Utah Missouri while Roosevelt gains in Utah and Missouri. Lemke has no state plurality. four minor candidates total 6599 votes.
Washington weather report shows September rainfall at 9.53 inches, surpassing the entire first six months total of 9.19 inches. It fell evenly across 50 days with 1.61 inches on the single heaviest day, temperatures ranged from 97 to 46, and a 45 degree night crept into October. Mr and Mrs Charles Johnson of Swedesburg were shoppers there yesterday.
Washington businessmen join in a home talent production titled The Dream of a Clown to benefit the Washington high school band. The show runs October 22 and 24 in the high school auditorium with men in feminine roles, singing and dancing, directed by an external expert and rehearsals beginning soon.
Ed P. Dehner of Burlington was arraigned before Judge G Patterson on DUI charges. He pled guilty and was fined $300 with a conditional jail term suspended if he paid $50 up front and kept good behavior.
Mr. F. F. Creitg and his son Billy of Davenport spent today in Washington.
Harry Sowden leased the four upper floors of the Bailey bank and office building at the square to transform into a new fire proof hotel with 36 rooms and modern amenities. Plans call for 12 rooms on the third floor, 12 on the fourth, and 16 on the fifth, plus a mezzanine lobby and two guest rooms on the second floor. The National Bank of Washington on the main floor and the basement shops remain, with remodeling targeting completion by January. Soller Construction of Davenport receives the general contract, Carson Plumbing and Heating handles plumbing and heat, and preliminary drawings come from Sowden, a former architect turned hotel manager.
