The state fish and game commission ruled that lowa duck hunters may shoot from scull boats this year. Commission members protested a prior ban and noted Illinois did not ban scull boat shooting. The Iowa season runs Oct 10 to Nov 18 with Mondays and Tuesdays as preferred hunting days.
The Dubuque event features Dr Charles R Brown formerly a Washington county farmer boy and Yale University theologian speaking at St Luke's Methodist church under its sponsorship. An audience of over 1000 is expected and attendees are promised a worthwhile lecture.
David Adney of Waukon, a long standing somnambulist, walked through his window screen and fell from the ground floor while asleep. He suffered severe scalp and back lacerations and multiple bruises before waking on impact. He now plans to sleep on the ground floor or install window bars.
The spillway concrete floor is finished at Eldora Lake and sides will be completed next week. After that the lake needs water to be usable, with ample supply expected in the area.
Emmetsburg unions halted their picket Saturday at the city water mains project after farmers, replaced by relief workers, were employed. The protest centered on the farming workers who carried a $700 debt from last spring tied to federal feed loan arrangements.
Gov Herring announced Iowa will receive 1.4 million dollars for relief in October after federal reductions from an initial 1.9 million request. He noted FER director FE Mu lock had sought 1.9 million but federal changes cut the allotment to 1.1 million and an extra 200 thousand was allocated for drought relief work.
Mrs. Oney Young of Newton waived to the grand jury on a driving while intoxicated charge and posted $500 bond. Homer Wilson pleaded guilty to reckless driving and paid a $54 fine. James Stedman and Boyce Stussell, both Newton residents riding with Wilson, paid $10 fines each for intoxication.
Mrs. Dela NEI, 50, of Atlanta, was struck and killed while gathering wildflowers along a highway. Genatime Reddon of Lewis, Louisiana, drove the car. he and a passenger escaped with minor injuries.
Miss Elizabeth Wyes district advisory nurse under the state emergency relief program arrived today. She is based at the Des Moines office and will assist local relief efforts.
The Southeastern Iowa district dental convention gathers Wednesday and Thursday at the Y M C A with about one hundred dentists expected. Dr Alvin L Miller of Charles City speaks on Immediate Dentures and a later lecture by Dr Leslie M Fitzgerald of Dubuque covers Economies and Dentistry. A film clinic on surgery and denture care follows, with a Thursday evening banquet at 6 30.
Dewey Coffman received a one year penitentiary term for desertion after pleading guilty in district court. Judge D. W. Hamilton pronounced the sentence yesterday afternoon as Richard Stewart had earlier defended him. Harold Marshall’s case also arose with a suspended three month jail term and parole to George Morrison.
SAN FRANCISCO October 20 193? Organized labor considered a fighting program on the second day of the American Federation of Labor convention. The plan centers on a 34 hour week and protection of collective bargaining rights as leaders gauged sentiment of 438 delegates toward President William Green and the executive council’s proposal.
Mrs T H Hill of Macon Missouri, who has been in Chicago for the fair, is visiting her sister Mrs P L Etter.
The Eicher Mennonite Sunday School captured the county Sunday school convention attendance award with 575 points. Crawfordsville United Presbyterian and Crawfordsville Presbyterian followed, while Washington Christian Church was praised for progress. The convention in Washington drew 24 Sunday schools and re-elected most officers, with Carl Johnson of Eicher as president and Mrs. Vernon Witting as secretary treasurer.

The Washington County warehouse board met to outline resealing plans for corn under seal. Howard M. Stewart and Walter R. Brown were appointed sealers with assigned townships to handle old and new crop resealing and related inspections. Borrowers must liquidate sealed corn by Oct 15 or reseal at 55 cents per bushel, with insurance at 70 cents per $100 annually.
Charles J. Webb aged 66 formerly of this city died in Los Angeles California. He was husband of Nannie Webb father of Mrs Ray H Critten den and George D Webb brother of Frank Webb and Claude B Webb Services Tuesday morning at local church in California obituary notice shared through Charley Ragan's family link.
Des Moines October filings show six parties with virtually complete slates for November. The Communist party leads with Meade for governor and candidates for lieutenant governor, secretary of state, and other state offices. Other parties filing include Democratic, Republican, Farmer-Labor, Socialist and Prohibition.
The second series of the third district meeting of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons will be held in Ottumwa on Thursday October 4. Guest speaker is Dr A C C Johnson a prominent osteopathic surgeon from Cleveland Ohio returning from the National Osteopathic Surgeons Convention in Des Moines.
Rev. David I Berger was installed pastor of the Pirs Presbyterian church in Muscatine in a Sunday service at 4 p m presided by Rev. F Wenger Crawfordsville moderator of Iowa City presbytery. W Eastwood Washington gave the pastor charge and Archibald Cardle Burlington gave the charge to the people. Guido Bossard Dubuque Theological Seminary sermon, with Wenger presenting The Constitutional Questions. A reception followed the service.
At 10 o'clock at Garrett Brothers Mortuary located at 921 Venice Boulevard a funeral service is held.
Des Moines reports the Iowa fish and game commission warns hunters to follow state and federal rules for migratory waterfowl season. Violations carry stiff penalties. illegal acts include hunting without a license, from boats or aircraft, using guns larger than 10 gauge, selling game, or hunting without a federal stamp.
Samuel Insull, 74, a dominant figure in finance, stood trial for fraud, facing 75 government witnesses and 2,500 government exhibits as 17 defendants, including Harold Stuart of Halsey, Stuart and Co. and Stanley Field, banker and Marshall Field nephew. The case centers on alleged investor losses from Insull’s empire of utilities and related firms.
An American named Albert Desario was killed in a London Paris airliner crash over the English Channel near Arridge England on October 2. Seven people died including the British pilot and six passengers. Three passengers were French and two Jewish. Bodies were mutilated and identification difficult. Explosion before the crash suspected as plane flew in rain over a rough sea.
The funeral for Miss Alice Crawford who died at the county home will be held at 10 30 tomorrow morning at Kalona cemetery with Newt Arnold of Kalona in charge. The body came from L A Jones funeral home. She was a former Kalona resident and lived at the county home two years. She was about 75, daughter of James and Mary Crawford. One brother Oscar Crawford of Monroe Nebraska survives.
Vicketing persisted at Muscatine button plants on October 2 as workers kept plants running or shutting down partially. Manufacturers said surplus goods and long buffers would keep industry stable for months. Strikers rejected the Iowa Pearl proposal to meet most demands but reject a six hour five day week and 42 weeks guaranteed work, prompting NIA officials to withdraw from arbitration.
The regular city council meeting last evening discussed the rocking of streets but no additional actions or proposals were announced.
Funeral services were conducted at 9:00 A M at Holy Trinity Church Richmond led by Rev J H O Donnell. Pallbearers were Joe Lohberger Joe Melinski Oscar Wolf Joe Webr Ed Lukavsky and George Stumpf. Burial followed at Kaelona Cemetery.
Mary Eisele and Bernice Derby spent the weekend at the Chris Brinning home near Wellston, sharing time and hospitality in a quiet rural setting.
