A Red Oak man Fred Combs aged 53 died three hours after a bullet wound taken in a suicide. Authorities believe a severe headache over several days prompted the act. He is survived by his wife, a daughter, and two sons.
Mason City veteran Nanford Mac Nider, former American Legion national commander, will campaign against the New Deal for Wendell Willkie. The Republican national committee announced he will speak first at Pawnee City Nebraska on Thursday.
In Shenandoah the annual Raily Day parade featured 1487 marchers headed by Shenandoah High School marching band. The Elks band performed as Sunday school groups gathered at Monument park near churches. The Methodists led with 406 members.
Two boys, Harold Kipper aged 13 and Dean Clausen 14, found an aerial fireworks bomb that failed to explode at the North Iowa fair last month. A match touching it caused a blast. Kipper suffered second degree burns on arms face and legs while Clausen was burned less severely though his barber head was singed.
A Des Moines report notes 1940 turkey production in Iowa declined slightly from 1959 totals, yet the state raises 1,864,000 birds and remains the fourth largest turkey producer. Only California Texas and Minnesota surpassed Iowa as of September 1 according to the U S Department of Agriculture.
Two Ottumwa residents were injured when a Missouri Transit bus traveling from Iowa City to Ottumwa plunged into a ditch between English and Sigourney. Passenger Clyde Wright Jr., 18, sustained back and head injuries from being thrown forward. He was treated at Ottumwa hospital after returning home.
In Shanghai on September 30 a U S Navy man was seized by Japanese gendarmes and allegedly beaten after being accused of intoxication. The sailor was fragged to the water front, and details were withheld pending investigation. Naval authorities and officials met to discuss the case.

Rev. William M. Nichol announces resignation from Washing United Presbyterian church after three years to become pastor at Sterling United Presbyterian Kansas. He will leave first of November. congregations plan meetings Oct 9 and Oct 10 to authorize release.
Washington revelry heats up as Festicorn begins this evening and runs to Thursday. Concessions rides and a corn map rise in the business district while a pageant horse show and banners for Festcom Frolics take shape at the Armory and Chautauqua park. The city hall hosts the county poultry show with plans for parade and other events underway downtown.
About 3,000 people attended the Washington airport dedication with 55 visiting aircraft. Up to 1,600 crowds at times. several pilots offered sightseeing flights and praised the field’s safety and preparation. Notable visitors included John Livingston of Waterloo and A B Livingston in a Dive Culver Cadet, with many others from Iowa City Waterloo Cedar Rapids Marshalltown Rock Island and nearby towns.

Judge P J Siegers sentences Marion Ginkens to 40 years in the state penitentiary at Fort Madison. Ginkens was convicted of rape last week with sentencing set for today at his request waiving a new trial motion.
A medical examiner from Burlington Iowa will be at the Washington post office at 10:30 am Tuesday October 1 to conduct physical examinations for young men of good character and no dependents aged 18 to 31 who seek enlistment in the United States Navy. Applicants should bring birth certificates if possible.
The Festhorn parade committee announces prizes for groups and individuals for parade prep effort and initiative. The parade starts at the Y at 4 30 Wednesday afternoon and travels around Lois Ofelt and Louise Barnes decorate bicycles. Elizabeth Meek and Vic Manussier decorate a bike wagon with corn. County Supt Lester B Krabill announced the event to country teachers. rural schools expected to enter.
Violet Flynn age 20 daughter of Mr and Mrs M M Flynn of nine miles SE of Washington and six miles NW of Ainsworth will reign as Miss Washington queen of the America on Par Bee pageant and Festicorn. She won by a landslide vote position nearly 700000 ahead of the next contestant as totals show Flynn 724550 and nine court members with large vote totals.
Governor George A. Wilson changes plans to make a Washington visit on Wednesday October 2. He will lunch at noon at the Y M C A with Republican party workers Young Republicans and Willkie club members and spend the afternoon meeting friends and attending the Feathorn.
This evening at eight o'clock a special preview of the pageant America on Parade will feature 350 Washington residents in the east at Chautauqua park. At ten o'clock the corn map is to be unveiled downtown. Violet Flynn, queen of the Festicorn, will be crowned and unveil the corn map. Cars enter near Troop D armory with ample parking. The stage uses Chautauqua grove as backdrop and seats for about 1,500 with 600 reserved at 25 cents more than admission. Troop members will direct traffic. Narrators T. L. Brookhart and Mrs. H. C. Hull will present the nine historical episodes.
The first Festiorn Parade is scheduled to begin at ten o'clock on Tuesday. Residents are advised to watch for processions through downtown, with local organizers announcing routes and anticipated crowds.
United Press reports intensified aerial combat between Britain and Germany from Scotland to the Rhine. Royal Air Force bombers hit Nazi supply centers while German raiders attacked London Liverpool and other targets. A dozen Nazi planes were claimed shot down as five air raid alarms sounded. Nazi sources put British losses at 38 planes.
Howard White crafts canes from corn cobs threaded on a steel rod and has already taken orders exceeding 25. Local social notes mention the Rukgabers visiting Mt. Pleasant with Mr and Mrs H E Rukgaber, the Stewarts heading to Pomona California, and the Coulters from Peoria visiting relatives for the weekend.
Ten o clock this evening follows the town pageant for the unveiling and dedication of a corn map crafted from over a million kernels. Dunham Morrison presides while Rev. Carl W. Klein narrates the map story. Lt. Gov B Hickenlooper and Violet Flynn will perform the dedication.
Chairman Roger Sherman described a new parade march starting at North Second avenue and East Third street then circling the square and surrounding streets ending at East Main street. He noted many country group entries, floats from several firms, fine horses, comic acts and industrial displays for an engaging event. A Thursday parade and a 4:30 Wednesday children’s parade are planned with the Festicorn program printed in the Journal.
Adjutant General Grahl reports Iowa National Guard units likely to be called between January 3 and 19. He notes all men 21 to 35 must register on October 16 and emphasizes deferment decisions are for draft boards, not individuals.
