Iowa Toll Surges to 739 in Thanksgiving Weekend Crashes
Iowa records 13 more traffic deaths over the Thanksgiving period with one fatality today from injuries suffered last Tuesday. Among the deceased. Louis Chipokas 67 and his wife Joanna in a crash on Iowa 13 near Central City, Edna Adamson 64 near Indianola, a mother killed when a freight train struck her car in Pleasant Hill, and four 17-year-old Fort Dodge youths in separate crashes. Additional victims include Mrs. Charles Butler 46, Diana Roberts 74, Horace Hill 72, a Oklahoma City couple, and Violet Anderson 45, plus a fire death of Ella Hallett 69 in Centerville. The toll compares with 614 deaths by this date last year.

A Belgian chartered four engine DC4 crashed on takeoff from Stanleyville Airport. Reports vary on fatalities from 33 to 44 with seven injured. The plane carried Belgian and Congolese crew and transported ammunition to Congolese army troops. Rebels held parts of Stanleyville as white mercenaries and Congolese troops retreat.
