Farm Bureau Holds 65 Percent of 1965 Goal Monday
The Washington County Farm Bureau hosted its annual Membership Kick-off Dinner at the YMCA with about 150 attendees including workers and wives. Gerald Snethen of the Iowa Farm Bureau Federation spoke on the bureau’s role in Iowa farming and noted steady year by year membership growth. The report said 65 percent of the 1965 goal was reached after one week of solicitation. Bob Jones opened the meeting and Charles Twinam gave the invocation. Dinner was served by Bureau Women.

Washington officials to attend Iowa school conference
A group of Washington education leaders will join the 49th annual conference of school administrators and supervisors at the University of Iowa on December 1 and 2. Jesse Linch principal, Robert Dimit junior high guidance counselor, and Mrs. Margaret Pefferman first grade teacher attend today and tomorrow. Supt. John V. Phleger and Edward Hutchcroft curriculum director plan to attend Tuesday’s session. Phleger also attended the Iowa Center for Research and School Administrators business session in Iowa City on Monday.

Youth held by police in Delta murder case
Pvt. Larry Wayne Derby, 20, Richland, was held in Keokuk County jail in the slaying of 73-year-old Herman Otto Ahrens. Ahrens was found dead in his Delta area home with a gunshot wound. Derby surrendered after surrounding officers surrounded his cabin by the Skunk River northeast of Richland. Arraignment planned for today.

Fires kill 12 children in two states from early morning blazes
In Baltimore seven children died when a tenement fire gutted their home. The mother and four other children escaped as police sought Arnold Kennard Smith, 40, a baile, amid a suspected arson liquid find. Victims ranged from 1 to 13 years. In Kentucky five Spencer children died in a Woodford County tenant farm fire. Patricia Ann Spencer, 13, survived with burns after the blaze on Monday night. parents escaped unharmed.
