Sunset Park in Washington is shut to all traffic for the winter to safeguard children using the slopes for sledding and other cold season activities. Officials will announce a spring reopening date when traffic resumes.
The King and I spring musical invites all interested to audition at the Community Center on Sunday and Monday, December 4 and 5. Director Lynn Martin will begin auditions at 3 PM Sunday and 7 PM Monday. Scripts are available at the Washington Public Library for study. Dancers and singers may audition, with music and accompaniment provided.
Hazel Syphrit, 55, of Des Moines, confronted a purse snatcher and pulled a pistol from her coat firing four times before the suspect fled. No injuries reported. The incident occurred in Des Moines. No further details available.
Seven township Extension elections produced six new two year members for the 15 member County Extension Council. Carol Sexton of Highland Township was re elected. New terms begin January 1 for Mouser Wellman Crawford Wells Kalona Birney Washington Davison Wayland Greiner Keota. Existing members Greenlee Hunt Greiner Peiffer Spenner Miller Roberts Walker remain. Organizational meeting planned for early January.
State Senator Bill Hansen of Cedar Falls visited Crawfordsville to launch his bid for the Republican nomination for Iowa Lt. Governor in 1978. He framed the race as a push for individual citizens and pledged grass roots outreach while touring Iowa in a campaign caboose. Schwengels called him a knowledgeable school leader and tough campaigner.
Erma Herbert sues Ron Schleda and Roger Harris in Washington County District Court for 55,841 dollars alleging Schleda pulled a chair from under her as she sat, causing a serious back injury. She also charges Harris with serving alcohol to an intoxicated man under the Dram Shop law.
Washington County Chapter of the American National Red Cross asks volunteers to bake and supply ninety dozen individually wrapped cookies for December at Veterans Hospital in Iowa City. Each carton must show the cookie count and delivery date. contact the Red Cross with quantities and availability.

Fourteen Dawson College students aged 16 to 20, two days overdue on a hike in northern Vermont, were located safe on the east side of Jay Peak near a cabin. A ground team with Jamey Burwash led the group. the hikers carried gear and supplies. Officials said it would take hours to descend due to impassable terrain.
Laurel Summers sold the town of Hurstville Iowa which he owned for nearly 30 years including 23 houses a tavern a store a warehouse and city hall to six Maquoketa businessmen led by former state senator Clifton Lamborn. Bids opened at the Jackson County Courthouse Maquoketa. Summers asked 1 million accepted 587000. Summers served as mayor and sole landlord since 1944.
United Mine Workers and coal industry negotiators agreed under federal mediation to concentrate and maintain continuous talks to avert a nationwide strike set for December 6. Prospects for a pre-deadline settlement look slim, though officials hope an early agreement is possible. Negotiations will occur in separate sessions with mediator Wayne Horvitz and coal specialist William Hobgood as the clock runs down.
In Columbus Ohio UPI. Ronald Littler, age three, sues Santa Claus and a helper for 25000. The suit, filed by his father, claims Ronald was dropped to the floor during a November 28 1975 visit at a shopping center, fracturing a front tooth. Names listed as John Doe and Jane Doe.
About 1,500 Washington County corn producers should have received mail ballots after Thanksgiving for the corn checkoff referendum. A one tenth cent per bushel levy requires a majority vote of eligible producers. Ballots must be postmarked by December 8 and verified by a signed eligibility statement. Washington County ballots will be counted December 19 and 20.
Jasper County District Court jurors found David Fagen 21 not guilty of killing Keota night marshal Douglas Bell whose body was found beside a patrol car on Iowa 77 south of Keota. The five day trial heard 51 witnesses with 16 for the state and 35 for the defense. The defense argued Fagen could not have been at the scene and contended the confession was coerced.
Rock Island Line, 150 years old, declares readiness for business after bankruptcy. Trustee William Gibbons and 28 colleagues visit Little Rock to attract traffic amid a Sun Belt route upgrade. They emphasize a rebuilt, reliable service and aim to boost Arkansas traffic to revive solvency.
Volunteers have made 150 benefit dolls for Washington High School to fund the band uniform fund. Dolls, provided by the National Bank, must be turned in December 1 or 2 and will be displayed December 3 to 10 in the bank lobby. The auction is set for December 11 at 2 p.m. with viewing earlier that day.
