In Wayland voters go to the polls Tuesday to decide the mayoral race. Kenneth Miller led the primary with 71 votes, Richard Adrian had 67 write-ins, and four scattered write-ins kept Miller short of a majority, prompting a runoff scheduled for tomorrow.
United Press International reports during a four day holiday that 472 people died in traffic accidents by 10 a.m. EST, the tally ending at midnight local time. California led with 59 traffic deaths, followed by New York and Michigan with 24 each, Illinois and Ohio 23, Georgia and Indiana 21, Missouri 20.
Wapello County authorities probed a possible connection between two fires Sunday night in Ottumwa. A boat owned by Mike Conley was stolen early Sunday, found outside the city set on fire with $9,000 damage. A second vehicle also burned. owner and damage were not identified.
UPI reports Sen Dick Clark and former aide Julie Marshall married in a Conway ceremony. The couple, both married previously, left for a one week honeymoon at an undisclosed destination. Clark, 48, will return to his office December 5 with his staff.
In Memphis Tennessee thousands of mourners filed past Elvis Presley s grave during the first public opening of the gravesite. A steady rain reduced crowds but gatekeepers say about 3400 visitors were escorted through the meditation garden at Graceland leaving damp flowers and tears as they paid their respects.
The Supreme Court again refuses to intervene in the government antitrust effort against the Bell system. In a brief order, the justices reject AT&T and its subsidiaries claim of immunity from antitrust suits due to regulation. The 1974 DOJ complaint targets AT&T Western Electric and Bell Labs, with only preliminaries completed.
A deadly crash on ice covered Interstate 57 near Mound City Illinois left one man dead and two injured. Harold Johnson 24 Poplar Bluff Missouri died after stepping from his camper to avoid the wreck. M Annette Smith 16 Washington Iowa was treated and released. Sidney Cunningham 25 Nashville Tennessee suffered major injuries.
Washington County residents face a revised criminal code requiring a sheriff issued permit to purchase and a state approved firearms safety course. The rules standardize concealed permit issuance, create professional and non professional categories, set age and conduct criteria, outline training, fees, and exemptions for law enforcement and firearm handling.
Richard Sydney, Iowa's top auditor for agency audits, told a legislative committee IPBN officials tolerated inventory irregularities and unauthorized expenditures. He cited more than 200 missing equipment items worth about 40,000 dollars, plus questions about 1 million dollars in purchases. The hearing examined slush funds, credit accounts with suppliers, and unaccounted purchases as IPBN faces formal probe ahead of the January reconvening.
Washington (UPI) barbiturates or sleeping pills are linked to nearly 5,000 deaths yearly and about 25,000 hospital emergency visits. Dr. Robert DuPont, head of the National Institute on Drug Abuse, said the study, requested by President Carter, urges controls while preserving medical use. The report notes limited long term effectiveness and possible insomnia after two weeks, and calls for FDA action and public education.
