Charleston carriage firm manager blasts a new city ordinance requiring horses to wear diapers. Alderman Joseph R. Young says the measure will curb droppings and protect the historic image of horse drawn buggies used by tourists.
Urbandale Police Chief Wayne Woods says he has suspended the rule on hair length for four months to let the 23 member department conform to current styles. He reserves the right to revive the old standards if officers get carried away. previously officers were not allowed to wear hair over their ears or collars.
West Des Moines Iowa UPI J Merrill Anderson says he has written Treasury Secretary William Simon urging an immediate investigation into whether European beef imports to the United States receive American subsidies. Farm Bureau officials say early checks indicate some European beef, mainly from Ireland, getting 25 cent per pound subsidies.
Lieutenant Governor Arthur Neu warned that the 1976 Iowa Legislature session could be long due to Democrats’ one year appropriations from 1975. Neu cautioned lawmakers to prepare for a drawn out year as budget matters unfold.
Des Moines city officials plan to discuss holiday gift baskets funded at about 8500 dollars for needy residents. City Manager Richard Wilkey urges withholding Yuletide charity due to tight city finances, noting the project has been on hold for three years and may not be funded this year.
In Farmville Virginia Dr Jung Bay Ra Longwood College psychologist reports 60 percent of 4 to 6 year olds prefer television to their fathers when asked which they like better. The study over two years in Farmville and nearby communities also finds only 20 percent favor TV over mothers with working mothers slightly more likely to favor mommy than TV.
President Ford departs with Betty and Susan for a 10 day tour through the Far East to consolidate peace after Vietnam and strengthen ties with China. Stops include Fairbanks Alaska, China, Indonesia, the Philippines and Hawaii with a birthday for Senator Stevens planned in Alaska.
President Ford nominates John Paul Stevens, a 55 year old Chicago area judge on the US Circuit Court of Appeals, to replace William C Douglas on the Supreme Court. Stevens is praised as an excellent scholar and judge likely to align with conservatism on the bench. confirmation touted as timely to keep the court at full strength.
A Washington woman, Betty Fenn, 44, was thrown from a snowmobile driven by her daughter Karen, 16, after the craft jumped a hill. Betty lay in the snow when another snowmobile, driven by Dick Weiss of West Chester, struck her, causing injuries. She was taken to Washington County Hospital for treatment. The incident occurred in a farm field near Washington.
Nassau County district attorney will not seek a grand jury on the death of 16 year old Mary Jane Dahl. Though he cites circumstantial evidence the medical examiner labeled the death homicide. He says conflicting expert opinions prevent proving the machine’s turning off hastened death. No fingerprints traced to the mother or aunt who were with her the night she died.
Sixty five persons from southeast Iowa attended the Extension Service timber management and marketing seminar in Brighton. Speakers Dean Prestemon and Paul Wray, Extension Foresters from Iowa State University, covered stacking and curing green native lumber and timber sale procedures to secure top prices. The Conservation Forester Bruce Plum of Fairfield offered assistance for larger timber sales.
The nine Washington County communities shared 52 629 from Iowa liquor revenues for 1974 75 with Washington City receiving 29 332 and Kalona 7 280 while other towns earned smaller amounts. Counties also gained 21 228 to offset military service tax exemptions, as statewide transfers totaled 3 336 789.
