Washington wore a Christmasy look as snow began falling early and continued into the afternoon. About one inch covered the ground by noon as the Chamber of Commerce played carols and crowds gathered. Santa Claus was due for his first appearance of the season, and the weather created an ideal setting.
Paul F. Nisly 20 of rural Kalona entered a not guilty plea at a formal arraignment in District Court before Judge Harlan W. Bainter. He waived his right to a speedy trial and no trial date was set.
District Court Judge Harlan W. Bainter enjoined Washington from removing the Baldrige law offices wooden platform at 210 W. Washington St. after Baldrige posted a $500 bond. officials argued the structure violates fire and zoning rules, while Baldrige cited hazardous conditions. Town Council schedules December meetings for Tuesday December 3 and Monday December 23 due to conflicts.
Secretary of State Henry Kissinger ends a five day trip to China touring historic gardens and an embroidery factory. He attended three banquets and six tea stops while discussing diplomacy. He and his party shared a Thanksgiving dinner with a Chinese army band playing Turkey in the Straw.

A panel of three doctors said former President Nixon cannot testify in the Watergate cover-up trial and likely cannot until February 16, 1975. They also noted deposition could not occur until January 6, 1975, and only in two one hour sessions.
President Ford personally rebuked Secretary Earl L. Butz for mocking Pope Paul VI in an Italian accent. Ford called the public explanation inadequate and Butz agreed to elaborate. Butz then reissued the statement, apologizing for any part he played in the controversy.
DES MOINES UP I A) A $2.3 million General Telephone Co of the Midwest rate request for Grinnell will be investigated by the Iowa State Commerce Commission. The order suspends the increase for 31 days to Jan 1 1975, with refunds and 9 percent interest if the higher charges are not upheld. The company would place $1.94 million into effect and seek bond backed refunds for the rest, while a Park View Water Co hike was denied.
Dale J. Dunn files a $34,181 petition in Washington County District Court against Duane Miller also known as Dwane Miller alleging severe and permanent injuries from a Nov 28 1972 collision after Dunns combine malfunctioned and was struck on the roadway. Dunn seeks damages for pain and permanent injuries, medical bills, hospital costs, therapy, and damage to the combine.
Washington announces Ford will travel to the People's Republic of China in 1975, marking a second presidential visit since Nixon in 1972. The joint statement notes continued efforts to normalize relations and references the Chang Hai communique while Taiwan remains a tense, unresolved issue. Haroldson Hunt dies at Baylor Medical Center in Dallas, age 35, after a virus admission. his fortune is estimated between 1.5 and 5 billion dollars.
Union County Sheriff Don Loy said the killings of five farm animals are the work of "ding a lings" shooting at random. A 12 year old pony named Sonny died on Eugene Miller's farm and four neighbors reported cows shot in pastures. The shootings occurred along gravel road pastures with no sign of accident. Loy suspects local youths and notes patrols have not stopped them.
Volunteers served Thanksgiving dinners to servicemen and the homeless in Chicago and other cities while labor data showed 2.2 million Americans on unemployment benefits. Indigenous leaders pursued land claims in Massachusetts. Kissinger joined a festive banquet in Beijing as Ford hosted a Thanksgiving meal with his guests. In Cuero Texas five jail inmates ended a hunger strike with a Thanksgiving chicken meal.
Iowa State Sen John Murray told a University of Iowa conference that the new alcoholism treatment law was implemented too quickly. The law reorganizes state funding for locally run treatment centers with 75 percent state funding and 25 percent county funds. The Division of Alcoholism sits under Health. the Iowa Commission on Alcoholism retains policy limits.
