Through October Des Moines police report more than 1500 bicycles valued over 45000 stolen this year up from about 1400 in the same period of 1973. Officers expect November and December to be slow for thefts but foresee some more losses before year end.
Iowa DOT heard 24 hours of testimony on whether 65-foot double bottom trucks should be legalized. Testimony from manufacturers, trucking interests, and transport groups focused on where limits would apply and which highways could be used. A Carlisle driver argued trucks should be allowed on all roads as they are safer because trailers follow.
A national symposium titled Food Famine and Foreign Policy will run February 11 to 15 at Grinnell College Grinnell Iowa. The Republican Party of Iowa announced a Dubuque County meeting this Saturday at 10 a.m. at the GOP headquarters to select a candidate for the pivotal 10th Senate District special election. The contest in the Democratic-leaning district could shift control of the Iowa Senate with Lt. Gov. Arthur Neu holding the tie-breaking vote.
The Iowa Commerce Commission was told of Chicago & North Western Railway plans for a 740 acre switching yard southeast of Marshalltown. The $17 million project would handle 3.6 million switches yearly and shift the main line to tracks northwest of the town. A public hearing has occurred and ICC review is pending.
Gov Robert Ray proclaims Thanksgiving Day in Iowa urging gratitude for blessings, harvest, family, justice tempered by mercy, and the state's heritage and future. The proclamation marks Thursday November 28, 1974 for thanks to God, each other, and Iowa's bounty and freedom.
The extended forecast for Saturday through Monday calls for partly cloudy skies and cold conditions on Saturday with highs 30 to 35 and lows 10 to 15. Sunday and Monday should be fairer and less cold with highs 35 to 40 and lows 15 to 20.
Iowa state agencies submit requests totaling 1.2 billion dollars for the next fiscal year. Gov. Robert D. Ray describes the total as preliminary and the largest possible under full approval. Department heads will meet through December to shape the governor's budget ahead of hearings in December.
MIAMI UPI reports a bogus memo on Dolphins stationery claimed free Thanksgiving turkeys offered to players who appeared at 5 p.m. Wednesday. Store managers deny any Alex Rodriguez involvement and say turkeys were priced 49 to 69 cents per pound for all shoppers.
