Officials said about 50000 in postal stamps savings stamps and registered mail were taken from the Fort Madison post office. The breakin happened between 10 p.m. Thursday and 2 a.m. Friday after the thief broke the front door lock.
Americans were dying in traffic accidents at about six an hour as the long Thanksgiving weekend neared its end. A United Press International tally at 3 a.m. EST reported 312 traffic deaths since 6 p.m. Wednesday, with 377 total fatalities from all causes including planes, fire and miscellaneous. California led with 34 deaths, followed by Georgia 21, Texas 20, and New York 16. The National Safety Council called the toll “on par,” noting a pre-holiday estimate of up to 800 traffic deaths. The holiday ends at midnight Sunday.
