For the first time in over a decade WaPello county's 1938 auto license number one will be issued to someone other than former Mayor Edwin C. Manning. County Auditor J. Edward Love will receive the first license this year.
Waterloo police will take a ten week first aid course directed by Frank Stephen son, superintendent of the fire alarm system.
Iowa City hosts the Iowa High School Forensic League annual institute on Saturday featuring a western conference debate between Minnesota and Iowa on the advisability of unicameral legislatures.
Eight people were injured at Waterloo when two cars struck an Illinois Central freight train at the same crossing in separate crashes. Four were hurt in each vehicle.
Mason City report states Theodore Wolfram proprietor of a Ventura general store was held up by an armed bandit and robbed of about $700 in cash and checks. The incident occurred on the way home. Nearby, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Caviness and daughter Karen of Adel visited Mrs. Caviness' parents, the DeLongs, before leaving yesterday.
Santa Claus will arrive in Washington next Saturday Dec 4 in his sleigh with Charles George leading the big days committee of the Chamber of Commerce planning to have snow. He will stay from 10 am to evening and hand out candy to children. Christmas music will fill Central Park bandstand as shoppers flock for gifts.
President Roosevelt submits a special message urging Congress to revise housing law to spur a 12 to 16 billion dollar five year construction boom funded by private capital. He calls for widened FHA powers, national mortgage debentures, and higher loan limits with conditional financing via the Reconstruction Finance Corporation.
Miss Anna Wallace of Washington died at 2 20 this morning at her West Jefferson street home after a period of illness. Funeral services will be held 2 30 Wednesday at Sherman’s funeral home conducted by Rev William M Nichol Jr of the United Presbyterian church with burial in Woodlawn cemetery. She was born in Portersville Butler County Pennsylvania and moved to Washington in 1875. She was one of nine children and survived by brother Henderson Wallace and sister Mrs Jennie Brashear and Mrs Minnie Beach of Sigourney.
A marriage license was issued at the courthouse to Kenneth Carsten Lemkau of Muscatine and Vernette Johnson of Washington.
Joe Soboski, 38, was killed at his Brighton area home when a gun discharged while he pulled it through a fence after leaning it there to corral runaway hogs. Coroner Dr. G. K. Dunkel ruled the death accidental. He leaves a widow Dorothy Kurtz and six children, plus his mother and siblings. Service held at St Marys Catholic Church Pleasant Plain with Father Speidel. burial in St Marys Cemetery.
Snow and ice coated streets as drizzle turned to snow Saturday afternoon, leaving several inches on the ground and making driving difficult. Temperatures ranged from 7 to 20 degrees with lingering icy pavement after Sunday sun melted some snow. Mrs. R. L. Livingston visits Chicago, then returns home with Mr. and Mrs. D. P. Livingston after Thanksgiving weekend.

Milton Norton and former county sheriff Daryl Mathers reached a out of court settlement of 250 dollars over a wrongful arrest claim. The case had progressed to the supreme court and was sent for a new trial before being settled privately.
