Floyd County Sheriff notes B F Atherton recounts a tell of Herbert Budwig reporting a stolen car. Mason City officers had earlier found a 14 year old boy driving the vehicle and notified Budwig hours before his report to the courthouse.
Cedar Falls man Lawrence Stocker was fined $5 in municipal court after police report he carried six people on one motorcycle with three in a sidecar and two on the bike itself.
Bremer County treasurer W. C. Hoth says his office will open at 8 a m on December 1 after last year’s midnight rush for license No 91. He notes others kept him at his office through the night but promises no early openings again.
In New Hampton a widow and her daughter witnessed the father's third wedding eve. Charles E. Fields, a Milwaukee railroad engineer, married Mae Sharp of Gravity. His daughter Floy Conley wed R. E. Quandahl, Mason City railroad clerk, in a second ceremony by Rev Roy C. Longfellow.
Rev Carl Hy Meinberg, an instructor at St Ambrose college, was named president of the college by Bishop Henry P Rohman. The appointment fills a vacancy created by Rt Rev Martin J Cone moving to the diocesan leadership and Sacred Heart Cathedral pastorate. Meinberg is a native of Keokuk.
In Waterloo two strangers bumped into 2 year old Denny Bell in a downtown crowd during a Santa parade. One man grabbed Denny’s mother Mrs. Robert P. Bell’s purse as she shielded her child. the bag contained little cash.
In Cedar Rapids an ambulance heading to an auto crash swerved to avoid a vehicle, nearly colliding with a bread truck ahead. Driver F. DD. (Spec) Collogan jerked the wheel, braked hard, and stopped after two tires blew out. He and the crew crawled from the ambulance unharmed. The vehicle rested on the Polk school curb.
Eagle Scout Enos Lloyd Jones rescued 5 year old James Champlin from drowning in Willow Creek near Hast park. Jones used approved life saving methods with a ladder after hearing screams from his front yard. assisted by Jim Hammersly and Girl Scouts Mary Barrets and Jane Satter who gave first aid as firefighters arrived.
Fort Madison reports Glenn Pierce, who escaped from a farm where he held trusty status, was returned to the penitentiary and stripped of trusty privileges within 24 hours.
Britain would consider returning some German colonies if Germany joins a revived league of nations and accepts a western European peace settlement. Conditions include league custody of colonies and guarantees of political freedom for local peoples. France signals agreement when meeting Prime Minister Chamberlain.
Jay N. Darling and Frederick F. Jordan report major gains in wildfowl, with hundreds of volunteers signing up for National Wildlife Restoration Week in New York. They cite the Malheur Lake project in Oregon returning over fifty native bird species and vow a nationwide week to promote outdoor heritage and unity among conservation groups.
An Iowa county pleads for a steady, soaking rain to replenish dry streams and wells. Soils lack moisture after a fall with little rain since the growing season, threatening water supplies if conditions don’t improve. Local areas report unusually low rivers and depleted reserves across the county.
Mrs. Rose Reid reports the county Red Cross roll call reaches 1251 members, 344 more than last year. Kalona leads outside Washington with 91 members and 22.25 dollars in donations, Riverside reports 56 members, Grace Hill lists 10, Richer church adds two members and 0.50 dollar donation, other towns contributing as results roll in.
Henry Simmering son of Mr and Mrs Jacob Simmering of this city is in the Veterans Hospital at Des Moines from severe injuries suffered in an automobile wreck a week ago. He was driving to Davenport to his job as foreman of a construction company when his car swerved into a culvert 20 feet above a creek, breaking a railing and totaling the car. He has a fractured thigh a broken leg and other bruises and has no memory of the crash. He was transferred from Hershey Hospital Muscatine to the veterans hospital.
Chicago actress Roberta Roberts arrived in Hollywood for a film career and says California traffic laws are too expensive after receiving tickets for bad lights speeding and having the wrong address on her driver’s license she notes.
Weather shifted cooler at noon with a reading five degrees below last night’s minimum. The current temperature stood at 30 degrees.
Two railroad workers were hospitalized in Centerville after a train struck a steam shovel near here. Fireman Clarence Chism, 50, was critically injured when he jumped from the train, and chief brakeman Hughie Allerdice, 49, also sustained injuries.
Gov. John W. Troy reports Alaska has produced $722,222,000 in minerals to date. The financial year shows total commerce with the United States at $114,923,169, up $23,162,815 from last year. Canned salmon led exports at $45,386,512.
President Roosevelt urged Senate leaders to keep federal farm program costs within 500 million dollars and to fund any increases only through higher taxes. He also hoped the program would stay within the original half billion dollar soil conservation estimate. In a letter to Senate Majority Leader Barkley he warned that rising expenditures without rising revenue would widen deficits.
Christmas decorations are taking shape in the business district. Oetjens set up small trees before stores and greenery streamers are on streetcar edges around Central Park. A large central tree will be placed with colored lights, guided by a Chamber of Commerce committee chaired by Louis Baird Jr.
Powers Produce offers a 100 pound sack of Victor all mash egg pellets for second place and the Iowa Poultry Produce Marketing association adds 100 pounds of mash for third place at the county poultry show to be held next week. The Edward C. Eicher trophy will go to first place in this department. Entries are already arriving for the show which opens Wednesday.
Parsons College awards a graduate, William Hugh Stickler, a Science expedition to the Amazon headwaters in South America. Five scientists will collect botanical specimens, tropical fish and insects while testing cosmic rays. The team sails from Panama June 11 1938 toward Lima and Huallaga river, ending near Porto Bermudas.
The midwest regional Y M C A men’s clubs convened in Washington with delegates from six states and twenty cities. A noon luncheon launched activities as rain and cold weather threatened the banquet and 200 anticipated attendees. Notables include E D Morrison, L M Chipman, and international president Lewis Warren with officers Madden Smith Grimes and McCleery named in leadership roles.
Jurors are to return next Monday and jury trials will resume unless plans change for the November session. The first case is Danes versus Martin seeking damages for an automobile collision on Sigourney street in this county. Glenn Martin, a Washington county resident, is the defendant, with several Sigourney lawyers active in the case.
Cincinnati November 27. Anna Marie Hahn was sentenced to die in the electric chair on March 10 for the poison murder of Jacob Wagner. Judge G F Bell overruled her motion for a new trial. The state accuses the immigrant of poisoning several other elderly suitors.
United States Ambassador Nelson W. Johnson arrived in Hankow aboard the Luzon with nearly all embassy staff. In Nanking a skeleton staff remained as the Chinese government fled before the Japanese advance. In Shanghai Japan seized control of all communications in the international settlement and Chinese services, with censors placed on mail radio post and broadcasting services.
The United Presbyterian Church hosted Thanksgiving services with decorations arranged by Don Benblossom. Eight baskets of chrysanthemums with oak leaves graced the choir loft and pulpit, and white candles stood in silver holders. Bulletins and offertory music by Mrs. Richard McCleery and Miss Helen Harvey complemented the ceremony.
